To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

We have wine delivered from Ocado and Waitrose all the time. I'd laugh if they asked my age but I have a made up age ready for all those forms etc that ask for it. No way would I ever give my real date of birth to a stranger.

You showed him your over 60 card. That was more than enough. YANBU

Indeed!

And, not wishing to derail this interesting thread, the following conversation took place on my doorstep . . . .

Delivery driver "I just need to check your DOB with what you gave the cutlery company"

Me "Certainly, it's 01/01/1956"

Delivery driver (checks handheld device) "Brilliant, here's your package"

Me "All that to get a cake knife!"

Delivery driver "What's a cake knife?"

Me "Err ummm, it's a knife for cutting cakes, err ummm like you would have for a wedding cake"

Delivery driver "Oh, are you getting married?"

I limped back into KnitnNatter Towers on my wonky hip with a big grin on my face . . . that was some of my pension money well spent!

Lol!!! This has made my day...thanks for sharing 🤩

The poor guy was doing his job, asking a question he has to ask. Honestly what's the big deal in giving it. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Does he really need ID to ascertain that someone over 60 is, in fact, over 25? 😂

OP must be aging well.

Needmorelego · 21/06/2024 17:17

@stopthepigeonstopthepigeon it was probably more to check the person taking in the delivery is the same person who actually ordered it - nothing to do with the OPs actual age.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/06/2024 17:19

I'm a supermarket till operator and I sometimes have to warn my customers who flip open their wallet when paying to reveal their driving licence (date of birth, address) NI card (full NI number) and, quite frequently all their PINs written down on slips of paper or the wallet itself. These customers are quite often elderly.

I have a VERY quick memory. In the time that they are fumbling about getting their loyalty card out, I can memorise their full name, DOB, address and at least part of their NI number or their PINs, particularly if they are regular customers. If I were of a criminal turn of mind I could do quite a lot with that information.

Don't keep your ID on full display, particularly when it can be seen by anyone you open your wallet for.

I have shopping delivered from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose and have never been asked for my date of birth by the delivery driver whenever I've ordered alcohol from them. I would be very wary about giving it out to anyone on the doorstep as they then have an address, age and date of birth. That's a lot of personal information to hand to someone you don't know.

Too right. No doubt the company has your phone number, too, to assist delivery. Just don't forget to provide them your mother's maiden name, too, for the full set! Grin

Company databases may be hacked or may sell on your data. Happens all the time. The need to input your DOB on a system on delivery is a 'need' put in place by the company itself and not a legal requirement.

None of which changes what is a legal requirement.

How hard is it to give someone your date of birth? Why do you care about having to do so?

Honestly, get a grip!

Exactly this.

Why to make such a big drama about it?

But the point is its NOT his choice. He has to input a DOB into the system. He's not for a second thinking she's under 25. He probably agrees it's crazy but he doesn't make the rules

What's the point of making things deliberately difficult

SerendipityJane · 21/06/2024 19:09

What's the point of making things deliberately difficult

Peaceful civil disobedience has a long and proud history and has achieved many advances in improving peoples lives over the centuries. I myself was deliberately annoying and expensive when it came to collecting the poll tax.

But for the love of all that is holy, pick your fucking battles.

If you want to really get upset over being ID'd then why not start with the totally unnecessary VoterID law ?

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

My DM is in her 70s. She just tells them and laughs. They buy usually laughs too but he’s got to do it and if you were a mystery shopper he’d get sacked if it got back to them that he left his goods without the ID.

Is it ?

Where were you when it was introduced ? What's your Big Idea to help keep children safe ? Let me guess: "common sense" ? Because that's worked so well. hasn't it ?

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

No, they aren't. Moreover, are you suggesting that they would be more honest than a delivery driver?

InSpainTheRain · 22/06/2024 17:54

I'm 59, I just expect to give my DOB if I order alcohol, glue, a knife or whatever from Deliveroo or Teacos etc. Don't see the big deal.

InSpainTheRain · 22/06/2024 17:56

Actually @LadyLapsang staff at voting sites are often members of the public recruited just for this. I know because I've done it. The checks are basic to be honest.

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2024 18:03

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket.

Do you know why ? Maybe go away, find out and then explain to us.

(I did actually ask today when I checked my self-scan out at Sainsburys. So I know a reason.)

Delivery drivers have to put your date of birth in their machine to prove they've asked for ID. When you show ID at shops and supermarkets they check your date of birth on your ID it's no different

No they aren't... they are volunteers... granted most work within government because they get a paid day to do it

RachTheAlpaca · 22/06/2024 18:58

You're a pain in the arse!!

My brother just got sacked because he didn't ID a mystery shopper when doing his delivery!

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2024 19:03

As noted upthread. supermarkets don't always ask for proof of DOB when they do an age check. There is a reason.

IndysMamaRex · 22/06/2024 19:22

Oh bloody hell life is too short for this drama just give him your DOB if you want the wine 🤦‍♀️🤣 trust me the driver could care less he’s just doing his job
