To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

I wear a balaclava when I answer the door to the Tesco delivery person, and insist that we do not make eye contact.

That's a step up from the average MNetter; they just wouldn't answer the door at all.

Amazon ask for dob for alcohol deliveries. Maybe the driver needed to input it

MMAS · 20/06/2024 18:18

You are incorrect - all supermarkets ask for ID at self check-outs and, cashiers sometimes do. If they don't, it means they use their discretion but at 63 I have often been asked albeit as a humerous thing.

UnitedOps · 20/06/2024 18:30

They input the date of birth onto the little hand held device they carry. It’s the only way to “complete” the delivery when restricted items are included in your shopping.

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

That's not entirely true - where most staff are from the local authority, they don't have to be.

As long as you meet the below criteria you can apply to work in a polling station.

  • over 18 years old
  • have a right to work in the UK
  • have a good standard of English
  • have not worked for a candidate standing in the election you want to work in.
ILoveEYFS · 20/06/2024 19:26

I work for a supermarket and there are only certain forms of ID we can accept. Oyster isn't one of them

StressedOutButProudMama · 20/06/2024 19:48

He was doing his job. If you do t want to answer questions relating to an age related product don't buy any.

are you serious? You can’t be!! Wtf it’s a legal requirement

It’s really not. I have had supermarket deliveries for over 16 years and have never been asked for id or a date of birth when having alcohol delivered.

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 20/06/2024 20:39

Have been getting alcohol in my online shop with 3 supermarkets for several years and never been asked for proof of age

I ordered a cake knife to match the rest of my cutlery and had to send evidence of my DOB to the cutlery company. When the delivery driver arrived I had to give my full DOB . . . I didn't have an issue with this

I am in receipt of a state pension 😂

....and in receipt of said cake knife!!!

YDBear · 21/06/2024 01:06

Strange. We have deliveries from most of the major grocers, often including alcohol
and we have never been asked for proof of age or to show photo ID. We live in central London.

Edited

Indeed!

And, not wishing to derail this interesting thread, the following conversation took place on my doorstep . . . .

Delivery driver "I just need to check your DOB with what you gave the cutlery company"

Me "Certainly, it's 01/01/1956"

Delivery driver (checks handheld device) "Brilliant, here's your package"

Me "All that to get a cake knife!"

Delivery driver "What's a cake knife?"

Me "Err ummm, it's a knife for cutting cakes, err ummm like you would have for a wedding cake"

Delivery driver "Oh, are you getting married?"

I limped back into KnitnNatter Towers on my wonky hip with a big grin on my face . . . that was some of my pension money well spent!

If we all refused to go along with ridiculous ID rules the rules would have to be changed.

Well no, they’d just not sell it online.

and it’s a something and nothing rule, I don’t give a shit about giving my dob.

As I have said - possibly to exhaustion - these laws were introduced to protect children.

Now if you don't feel like protecting children, that's fine. But make sure you tell everyone that is the reason so as to be sure to get a sympathetic hearing.

pollymere · 21/06/2024 10:02

It's pretty standard to ensure you're over 18 for their system.

Danielle9891 · 21/06/2024 12:48

You seem like hard work. I delivered for a shop and I couldn't hand over alcohol without checking their id (had to contain their date of birth) and type that date into the scanner for it to be authorised. I could have lost my job if I gave alcohol to someone without doing this.

How exactly does asking me my date of birth protect children. I have been old enough to buy alcohol for 49 years. I know I look young for my age but it is ridiculous to think I am under 18.

Once again, you are arguing with the wrong person. It's your own time you are wasting. Which you seem to have plenty of.

The correct and proper place for your questions, comments, and pithy commentary is the place that makes the rules. Not the poor sods who have to live by them, or explain them to you.

It matters not one jot whether I think these laws protect children or not. Because I am the parliament who clearly think - or thought they do.

So I repeat my invitation again. By all means argue against child protection measures. But do it with the right people. Particularly on a parenting forum, it's possible some people might like the idea.

I got a small kitchen knife from Amazon the other day and had to give my date of birth. It's no big deal is it ? Their tracking thing requires something.

Knives are, again, age-restricted. If anyone has a problem with that, they need to take it up with the government (betting slips are available in most town halls).

Did you go shopping after this in store or another online order?

IIlolamay · 21/06/2024 16:17

I have shopping delivered from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose and have never been asked for my date of birth by the delivery driver whenever I've ordered alcohol from them. I would be very wary about giving it out to anyone on the doorstep as they then have an address, age and date of birth. That's a lot of personal information to hand to someone you don't know.
