I don’t know what’s in the water at the moment but I’ve posted a few times on here in the last few months seeking advice and have received nothing but awful, nasty comments that have really upset me, and I am not a sensitive person. I don’t have a close circle of mum friends, I’m not close to my mum either so this is the only place I can come and voice these concerns or feelings.

Nothing I’ve said has been outrageous or contentious, I mainly ask questions about whether particular aspects of my toddlers behaviour is normal, but I’ve been called a bad mum, entitled, lazy and stupid amongst other worse ones. I know (or thought) I wasn’t any of those things, just a mum to a 2 year old navigating this all for the first time.

This forum has really changed in the last few years and I’m not sure why, but it’s not a very nice place to be anymore. If anyone has any suggestions for other forums please let me know… I could really do with the support.

MN does have moderators, they work behind the scenes

When you report something someone has posted, the moderators work behind the scenes to decide if it's posted by a troll, if it breaks Talk Guidelines etc. that's called moderating.

theyre even called Mods.

the ones that volunteer at nighttime are called Night Watch

People ought to try being a moderator for a week to appreciate how difficult it is to get right. Especially on a forum like this with highly opinionated and demanding punters.

Over-moderate and you're accused of shutting down democratic debate
Under-moderate and you're accused of allowing comments to slip through for an easy life etc
You just can't win.

You'll never please all of the people all of the time and will get blamed endlessly whichever decisions you make.

Rather them than me!

I agree with this view. Mumsnet Towers can’t win really. It must be extremely hard to manage. And what does everyone expect from a site that is essentially free to use?

I think they run in to difficulties though by moderators relying too heavily on posters reporting, rather than Mumsnet Towers making their own independent judgments.

There can be certain “polemical” topics shall we say, where groups of posters who hold one view, have started reporting en masse the posts of people whose respectful but opposing views they disagree with. And that can lead to certain voices being continually shut down unfairly, which is the opposite of what this forum is about.

Obviously I am not going to mention names but I am quite surprised to see one or two posters on this thread advocating “good behaviour” who are guilty of this and who can be extremely snarky and condescending in their replies; not to mention intolerant of views opposite to their own.

I have tried to couch this post in as respectful a way as possible. I am not posting gratuitously as (see my pps on this thread) I have a great deal of love for Mumsnet but I think this is an issue that needs addressing. And I hope this post won’t be deleted as it is meant sincerely.

Right, but it’s based on users reporting. And that’s… less than perfect.

I don’t think you should bring your political opinions and personal complaints about other posters here to the OP’s thread. The people that have attacked her are unlikely to be engaged in the same topics as you.

Your response doesn’t surprise me one bit AliceOlive but I respectfully disagree.

I have every sympathy with the op and have addressed her points in pps on this thread, but the discussion has now broadened, as these things tend to do. The subject of moderation was raised and I was addressing that specific point.

Also, as I understand it, a wide spectrum of political opinions should be able to be aired freely on Mumsnet and given a fair hearing. And that, as far as I am concerned anyway, is one of the main attractions of the site.

The OP has been attacked and criticized while seeking help. I hope she will stick around and take some of the great advice from other posters. There is good support here, but sometimes you must take what helps and leave the rest.

Absolutely agree! I don’t think anyone disagrees with that do they?

As you know AliceOlive, I was making an entirely separate point.

I really have no idea who you are or what point you think you are scoring or making. I’m here to support the OP and that is all. Please move along! I’m not wishing to derail the thread.

I’m not trying to derail at all and am happy to move on.

And now I wish I’d not said particularly twice. There will be people judging my vocabulary 😂

You’ve said it three times now 😂

I'll probably get banned for saying this but I think MNHQ have some new mods who are failing the forum, massively. Sorry but that's just my guess & my opinion

Some might say it looks almost deliberate as controversial threads attract more posts and therefore more revenue.

there are a lot of threads that look like they are AI and they generate traffic.
