Nearly one in ten Reform UK candidates is a 'friend' on Facebook with British fascist leader Gary Raikes, it was reported yesterday.

Mr Raikes founded the New British Union (NBU), which has called for a 'fascist revolution' and sees parliamentary democracy as an 'obstruction' to establishing a dictatorship.

He formed the NBU in the image of Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists, with activists calling themselves 'blackshirts'.

Strange how all of a sudden Facebook "friends" are classed as proper friends. It is meaningless.

Hugosmaid · 14/06/2024 10:43

I follow organisations on twitter to see what BS they are coming out with.

newnamethanks · 14/06/2024 10:53

Nobody likes to admit they were scammed. People have thousands of pounds taken from them and feel too embarassed to admit it. Likewise Brexit. A bucket of LIES. Those of you who believed Nige and his slimey mates are about to be scammed again if he can get away with it. Are you going to double down on it or look reality in the eye? Snake oil.

The problem is all the parties lie. They all promise this and that in the run up to the election but don't stick to those promises. I think a party should be held accountable to what is put in their manifesto.

Is it hell meaningless. I wouldn’t dream of associating with a fascist, even digitally. I blocked my own cousin because he was a BNP member.

Well the problem doing that is you create an echo chamber.

It’s good to see other people’s views - at least just to keep an eye on them.

I agree. I think this modern tendency to only associate with people who share your views - and as @Anonym00se illustrates - make a virtue of this is frankly bizarre.
How will you ever open your mind if you only talk to people who think in the same way you do?

tennesseewhiskey1 · 14/06/2024 12:55

NF is just all talk - he talks a big game - he's always done... then he will disappear. They won't win anything.

I’m open to loads of of other points of view. My friends range from dyed-in-the-wool Tories through to Momentum members and everything in between. But I draw the line at Fascists. They’re evil people, and Reform’s manifesto reads like the Fascist playbook and we should all be terrified.

Does it, in what way?

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/06/2024 15:26

The last time I met a fascist was the 1970s, I couldn't believe my ears at the shit he was saying; honestly. history does show that the UK really doesn't let 'fascists' get very far as the vast majority of people here find it an abhorrent ideology.

Very few people supported Oswald Mosely and I went on a few Anti Nazi League marches in the 1970s which was a counter to the rise of the National Front. There are very few fascists in the UK and I really don't think Reform is representative of anything vaguely fascist.

It's a term that gets bandied about too easily and therefore undermines it's real meaning. A bit like letting a Danger! No swimming sign get too dirty and covered by weeds - so people go swimming and it's all fine - until someone drowns.

They don't make anything like this anymore! Political correctness has seen to that! 😆

Which bits? Given that all MNetters are on 6 figure salaries I'd have thought the income tax reforms would be lapped up on here.

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/06/2024 16:34

Bloody hilarious @SerendipityJane - just how we used to deal with nasty things, before we all got too scaredy cat to confront it.

Fascists dissolve before laughter.

Mosely lost any chance at being an English Hitler when at a rally he did the Nazi salute and someone said "Yes, Oswald, you may use the lavatory".

I'd like to think it was my old manor of London, but a friend thinks Liverpool.

People should educate themselves on Cable Street. Might shatter some preconceptions.

newnamethanks · 14/06/2024 16:57

Political correctness hasn't made satire redundant, it's the clown show that pretends to be governing us. Nobody would make up some of their dodginess "Oh help, I'm kidnapped and locked in room, get me £1000 immediately' says a Tory MP on the phone to a constituency member at 3am. "Not porn, I was looking at tractors". 'Testing my eyes'. They've stolen all the best lines. Even Armando Ianucci would be pushed to stretch reality further.

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/06/2024 17:23

@SerendipityJane , yes I agree, I did have to refresh my memory about Cable St and is a good example of how the UK population acts against 'fascism' and indeed any local/national directive they very much disagree with. The modern shame of it, is that people seem so ashamed to be British without understanding that most people here are tolerant and defend against 'bullies'.

There are times when I've hung my head in shame too - the Iraq Invasion - but the govt at the time were far too much up Bush's arse and his explanations of "evil doers" to listen to the people and the world has been more unstable since.

Worry about the big stuff OP, Reform are nary more than a pressure group and nothing near 'evil' nor fascist.

Yup. I am an immigrant I was still frinds with people who started to believe in the "they all came in here from EE got free houses". I queationed how because I got no free house. And I feel quite cheated!
I got to understand where they were coming from and they got first mouth explanations on how it works.
They were all outraged about CSI requirement for EUSS (which was dropped) after when I explained what it was. Or when non EEA friend told them about NHS surchage etc.
I agreed with some of their points, they agreed with mine. I challenged some, they challenged mine.
That's how reasonable people work.
I got proper hate from labour support (I was in stronghold) when I said I will not vote Labour candidate in locals because I didn't like his manifesto. And that I was still friend with "the right" .
Might be biased as former USSR satelite but left support is worse and less open than the right support I met. Historically both came with tanks to my native country 🤦 so both extremes are bad as each other. Towards middle right patronised me less...

An easy read synopsis of the 1970s anti-fascist movement; basically it was wound up after it was clear that the fascists were no longer rising, although there will always be a few 'underground' and the odd nutter that dares to show their face.

Militarising the police force, immunity from criminal prosecution for serving servicemen, no elected leader, use of ‘newspeak’, obsession with days gone by and “traditional values”, use of patriotic slogans (Make Britain Great Again 🙄).

@SerendipityJane - I was there 30th April 1978 in Victoria Park - it was a great day in every way.
