Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

I currently have goosebumps in my office, when at this time of the year, we would have the windows open.

yogibear31 · 07/06/2024 11:02

It's been lovely and warm in Plymouth.

dottiedodah · 07/06/2024 11:04

FuzzyPuffling I am intrigued that it gas been 24, and your DC have been in their pool .We are in sunny Bournemouth .and apart from a couple of days last weekend it has been chilly, and no one is in sodding shorts!I thought it was just me as I am battling Cancer ,but no the young Nurses felt it was very cold as well!

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/06/2024 11:04

It certainly isn’t perfectly sunny or a typical temperature. It’s 13 degrees here and as grey as it’s been for the last few months, as well as windy. I have a t-shirt and blazer on inside and I’m distinctly chilly and thinking about getting my hoody. I have worn sandals to work twice this year and usually I’m in them for most of the summer term.

Chypre · 07/06/2024 11:04

OP where are you based? I’ve been wearing shorts all week (sometimes with a jumper, but still) and we’re is south west. It’s been grim up until end of may, but summer got here in the end. Maybe another week to wait until it rolls up north!

AtomicBlondeRose · 07/06/2024 11:05

This is today. Looking through my photos I have one from June 10th last year where I’m in a sun hat and shades in the garden, and DD in shorts eating an ice lolly.

Really?! you really don't know what I mean?! Confused I did actually explain it in another post afterwards, but I thought it would have been obvious what I meant!

We're literally 7 days into 30 days of the month and you're already complaining about it being 'one of the coldest Junes ever!' We are barely a quarter of the way through the month. We've got another three and a half weeks virtually.. You should only really be starting this thread if it hasn't gone above 14-15 C by the 20th or something, not the 7th!

Yeah it was a glorious June last year (and the second half of May was lush too.)

But we went on to have the shittiest July, and the shittiest August for YEARS.

Be careful what you wish for.

ShillyShallySherbet · 07/06/2024 11:09

It is chilly but at least it’s dry! I saw the sun and got excited and put on shorts and T-shirt earlier this week though and I was so cold! As they say though, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, so I don’t see why it should stop people enjoying the outdoors. In fact when it’s too hot and sunny I find that a bit too much and just want to hide!

Yeah that's true. Had hardly any rain here so far. Only on one day (Tuesday just gone.)

JaceLancs · 07/06/2024 11:17

I’m in the north west and used to it being bit colder in general - recently it’s been the wind that makes it feel colder as we are quite near the coast
Middle of week I was in Birmingham for a work event and was wandering around in t shirt or dresses without a jacket - even in the evening a shirt on top was plenty warm enough

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 07/06/2024 07:41

I’m loving it. Dreading the heat.

I’m sorry people are struggling though, I can’t imagine having the heating on. All doors and windows open this morning, bedrooms already warming up.

Yep 🥲

Disturbia81 · 07/06/2024 11:27

I was shivering in my coat on way to work this morning! I don't like really hot days anyway but this has gone the other extreme. Heating on every night, still warming my bed up with hairdryer, fire on in room.

i was merely querying the temperature. I’m not trying to re do my GCSEs. Allow me a sweeping statement that it’s bloody cold for June 😬

@juga Ignore them, it's definitely unusual and so was May. Talking about the weather is in our blood 😆

maddiemookins16mum · 07/06/2024 11:39

It’s the chilly breeze that makes it feel cold, that said I love this weather, no humidity and great for drying outdoors.

DrCoconut · 07/06/2024 11:49

I had to switch the heating on the other day, it was so cold. It's definitely the wind that is the worst, it is biting and cold even when it's sunny. We need a really good hot summer now, only one of the last four was anything like decent and last year's was awful.

positivewings · 07/06/2024 11:49

Its 18c were i am and its really nice sun keeps popping out.
Got all the windows open wide as normal.
Not to bad.

Choochoo21 · 07/06/2024 12:02

Yes it’s definitely chilly as I seem to be wearing my dressing gown a lot in the evening, which I don’t do this time of year usually.

Its not cold enough for the heating to be put on but it’s not as warm as I thought it would be.

Although we’ve had a few really hot days and I wonder if that’s why it feels chillier than it is.

It is dry where I am though and so it doesn’t stop me going out and doing things, I just put my coat on.

It’s not dry here. I’ve been off work for the last two weeks and it’s rained every day apart from one. not all day but enough to put me off going cycling most days. I went yesterday and cut my ride short due to the rain starting.

Global warming affects the entire globe, but is affecting different regions in specific ways.

The reason that the UK is relatively warm, despite being really far north on the map (same latitude as really northern Canada!) is because of the jet stream, a current of warm water coming up from the tropics.

With global warming, the jet stream is getting more wobbly, and less stable. That means the UK in particular is going to get more unpredictable temperatures and - if global warming gets really bad - it will get much colder in the UK all year round.

The thing is, there were actually similar points during the Holocene when weather patterns became 'stuck' (caused by a more meridional jet stream - just as seems to be more prevalent recently). The transition from the 'Medieval Warm Period' to the 'Little Ice Age' at the end of the 13th century, beginning of the 14th century, was very notable for its swings in weather patterns - from extreme heat and drought to very stormy, wet conditions (which contributed to other disastrous events, such as the spread of human and cattle plagues across mainland Europe and Britain and successive poor harvests). There are plenty of contemporaneous accounts of this in English Manorial records - it is fascinating and I certainly think we should be more open to exploring the real contribution that natural climatic drivers make to our weather patterns (although it is definitely not de rigueur to make such suggestions these days).

That's lovely news, but how do they know? Confused I don't think they can accurately predict the weather for more than 3-4 days ahead. They have got it wrong SO many times this past 2-3 years. Always rains when they say it won't, doesn't rain when they say it will. It's so hard to plan anything!

They have records going back at least 100 yrs.

StoneColdAlibi · 07/06/2024 12:22

Sorry, but it's been pretty nice down in Sussex. Yes it's been changeable, but most days have had some sunshine for a few weeks now and I was working in the garden in a bikini top and shorts on Sunday.

JudgeJ · 07/06/2024 12:23

I can't remember the last time I wore socks in June!
