Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

Global warming affects the entire globe, but is affecting different regions in specific ways.

The reason that the UK is relatively warm, despite being really far north on the map (same latitude as really northern Canada!) is because of the jet stream, a current of warm water coming up from the tropics.

With global warming, the jet stream is getting more wobbly, and less stable. That means the UK in particular is going to get more unpredictable temperatures and - if global warming gets really bad - it will get much colder in the UK all year round.

Its my birthday at the weekend, and as a child I always thought I had a 'summer birthday' but in recent years its been nothing like summer on my birthday.

I also feel like this has been the coldest June (and May) that I can remember and its very depressing.

OhmygodDont · 07/06/2024 08:12

Yes although we have had some pretty warm days the temperatures over night have still be very low. 6/7c over night shouldn’t be happening right now.

Lots of crops don’t like below 10c and should be out by now.. it will affect food prices as there will be less produce or will require more artificial heat inside glass houses and polytunnels.

Auburngal · 07/06/2024 08:16

Someone told me that in the mid 70s it did snow early June.

Though its cold for this time of year, my hay fever this year is bad thanks to the wet spring which has created huge flowers and leaves - more pollen.

It's been warm ( 24°) and sunny here in SW Devon. T shirts and shorts weather for days.
The kids over the road have been in their massive paddling pool every day.

14° here yesterday. NW.

Sallysoup · 07/06/2024 08:22

Absolute shite. Don't tell me to put a coat on, I haven't taken it off yet 😖

I’m in London and it’s been 18 degrees plus for the last 3 weeks or so. So not cold, but also not sunny which I have more of a problem with! We need sunnnnn ☀️☀️

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/06/2024 08:27

I don't like the heat so I don't mind this weather... i love a chilly night... bedroom window is open to let the breeze through.

It has snowed in June since then too.

Put yourselves in jumpers and coats and go for a walk/play in thee park

I fail to understand why people do not see walking as acceptable when it's cold

Because children often find it boring and tedious? They'd rather be paddling or picnicking or something much more fun. People just feel better in the sunshine.

I'm delighted with this weather. Its hot enough and sunny enough to sit out in by the afternoon, but cold and crisp at night so amazing sleep with all the windows open. Heaven.

Yeah, actually it is nice not having a muggy bedroom at night!

Yes, I'm old enough to remember that!

TuesdayWhistler · 07/06/2024 08:31

I've been in the Midlands for the last couple weeks, it's been really lovely.
Little grey here and there, but also sunny and warm.

At the fair in Tamworth on Saturday and caught the sun, as me nan would say. It can stay like this for.me..dry, sunny 20c or there abouts.

Global warming is a hard sell round here.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen its not a hard sell, just don’t understand it! Would love to know more about it

This is one of the reasons why the term Climate Change is used now rather than Global Warming. Yep, a different buzzword for when the first one has been overused. I remember when it was "the hole in the ozone layer", and "the Greenhouse Effect": some people then got the wrong idea, and blamed tomato growers and their evil greenhouses.

Yes, it is very chilly for June. In May, we were still waiting for spring, never mind summer. The only comfort is that in previous years, children and teenagers were stuck in school doing exams during the only warm part of summer, which was then over by July. This year, they're not missing out; and there is hope yet for July and August, when Mumsnet will be full of "I hate the sun, I wish it would go away".

Sorry, just need to untangle this. The jet stream is high up in the atmosphere. It does oscillate north and south. It the jest stream lies to the north of the UK we get warm air drawn up from Africa etc. If the jest stream lies to the south of us, we get colder, arctic air.
The Gulf stream or North Atlantic Drift is a warm ocean current that raises the sea temps around the coast of the UK by about 3 deg C. The current chilly June might be because of the recent El Nino pattern but I haven't checked the specifics.
In either case, changes to the pattern can create changes in the weather. If the sea temperature warms up (climate change) it will affect the weather patterns. Likely more changeable weather and rain. Deep joy.

mitogoshi · 07/06/2024 08:36

Where are you, it's normal June weather here, mud teens to low 20's

Here we go Hmm

I walk in all weathers, but it is simply more enjoyable when a) the ground is dry underfoot so you don't have to stick to the roads and b) you don't have to bundle up in several layers.

What is so difficult to understand about that?

This. It's not too cold to go out.

I have photos of a trip to the coast this time last year and we were wearing down Jackets and jumpers so it wasn't warmer.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 07/06/2024 08:38

A bit of vigorous exercise for 30-40 minutes keeps me warm for much of the day

I live in Plymouth and it's been nowhere near 24 degrees, the highest was last weekend around 22 and all this week has been 16 with temp dropping dramatically in the evening - where do you live??

RampantIvy · 07/06/2024 08:42

Weather forecast for my part of South Yorkshire 😞

Eleven degrees. Eleven flipping degrees in June!
I can see that nearly 20% of posters on this thread love this weather, but mumsnet is the home of women who have the vapours every time the thermometer hits double figures, and who melt when it reaches 16 degrees.

The problem is that as it is so cold our heating comes on. I am also using the dehumidifier and tumble drier more because of all the rain so we are using more resources which compound the climate change problem.
