Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

I just wish the wind would stop blowing. I want to spray the weeds on my patio without covering both the rest of the garden & myself...

UniversalAunt · 07/06/2024 12:29

I’ve not found the weather that unusual for May & June, just a bit cool so two thin layers is just right.

In the past I have walked to walk in August wearing a jumper, trudged through snow in London in April & October.

The UK has the benefit of a maritime climate so seasonal variations are to be expected.

Most media weather forecasting is an approximation & even good reliable records do not go that far back so most weather trend data is recent.

sarahc336 · 07/06/2024 12:30

We had hail stones the other day 🙈 also why is it always windy, like every day for about 2 months. Really does feel like climate change doesn't it

Borborygmus · 07/06/2024 12:33

It seems a bit cooler than usual, but that's fine by me, I'd be perfectly happy for it to be like this for the rest of the summer (every year). But I do recall many years ago having snow in June, so it could be a lot worse.

They have records going back at least 100 yrs.

Climate models are incredibly inaccurate. The range of possible temperature projections (from all of the principal models) is actually greater than the temperature increase ostensibly experienced since we came out of the 'Little Ice Age'! The problem is that there is a great deal of inconsistency in the temperature records, making it challenging for them to be utilised in modelling future weather/climate. Many weather stations have been closed and there is a lack of transparency over why the decreasing number of weather stations have been selected ('cherry-picked'?) to contribute towards official records. Adjustments are constantly having to be made, for example, to try to counter the impact of the 'urban heat island effect' - arguably a significant variable in recent temperature records. Funny how often temperature records seem to be broken at Heathrow airport isn't it!
Interestingly, the satellite data of the last 30 years is not in conformity with the extreme temperature predictions churned out by the computer models (which have to be constantly tinkered with in an attempt to get them to more accurately reflect what is thought to be shown by the proxy temperature record).

exiledfromcornwall · 07/06/2024 12:40

I do remember one June when the weather was dire. That was 2012. I remember it so well because we had to go down to Cornwall for upsetting family reasons and it was cold and stormy, more like March than June. Also that was the year of the Diamond Jubilee and I remember the weather being awful for the boat procession on the Thames. I think the Duke of Edinburgh caught a nasty chill because of it.

That said, this one hasn't been much better so far.

Ooh, thanks. I'm a few years out of the game and not kept up with modelling techniques. I didn't know about the cherry picked weather stations either or the satellite data lack of conformity. Do you have a good link? Sounds as if I need to do some reading.

I’m loving it. Dreading the heat.

I’m sorry people are struggling though, I can’t imagine having the heating on. All doors and windows open this morning, bedrooms already warming up.

I'm dreading the heat as well. I'm in Essex, and it can get bloody unbearable here. Also, my home town is suffocatingly overcrowded, with horrible little new builds jammed on top of one another, and traffic that is beyond a joke. During the last major heatwave, I remember screaming into a towel in the bathroom because I just couldn't take it anymore. The combination of noise and heat and crowding drove me insane.

Whyoohwhyohwhyyyy · 07/06/2024 12:51

I'm sick of it. Feels like it's been cold and wet for a full year now as we barely had a summer last year. I've put my heating on today and looking at holidays (that I can't afford)

sueelleker · 07/06/2024 12:54

I'm in Sussex, and even when it's sunny the wind is so cold!

Heartbreaktuna · 07/06/2024 12:55

It has felt very cold. We had snow and hail here on Tuesday (Scotland).

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2024 12:56

A bit of vigorous exercise for 30-40 minutes keeps me warm for much of the day

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

you might wanna go to doctors about that

it’s really not normal to be hot all day following just 30 mins of exercise

This. It's not too cold to go out.

I have photos of a trip to the coast this time last year and we were wearing down Jackets and jumpers so it wasn't warmer.

Nope it’s not too cold to go out but I’d love to go out without my big winter coat, waterproof boots and hat on. We’ve had maybe 6 hot days this year, warm enough for shorts, it’s not unreasonable to want a bit of warmth and sun.

it’s been bad weather since this time last year. Bought a hammock this time last year. We’ve used it 4 times.

im not lying in a hammock in a hat and gloves.

ThePoshUns · 07/06/2024 13:06

I'm so sick of it after such a shitty winter. It's raining here as well as being cold. It's really getting to me.

alittlehopeisadangerousthing · 07/06/2024 13:08

I have SAD and if the rest of the so-called summer continues along similar lines my mental health is going to be fucked come autumn

Watermelon197 · 07/06/2024 13:14

Has it always been this windy for so long?

AnnieP1 · 07/06/2024 13:17

Nearly the longest day of the year and it is still unrelentingly wet and miserable.
Walked the dog this morning in my winter puffa coat, wellingtons and could have done with a pair of gloves and a hat. Constant wind with driving drizzle.
Utterly f*ing soul destroying non stop wet, windy weather.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2024 13:24

As they say though, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing

Please stop repeating this trope. It's getting boring. Wearing warm clothes still doesn't make the ambient temperature warmer. I love spending time outdoors, and am about to do some gardening. In warmer weather I would like to sit in my garden and enjoy the fruits of my labours, instead of looking at it through the window.

What don't you get about people wanting warmer weather and being able to wear fewer clothes, no socks etc?

Fluffyc1ouds · 07/06/2024 13:32

We've had windows open and summer duvets on for a while but it's definitely not feeling like summer. I'm hoping the warm weather is being saved up and we might get a hot July and August!

therealcookiemonster · 07/06/2024 13:48

I am wearing 2 t shirts, a fleece zip up and sitting with my feet under the duvet

it's freezing

RoobarbAndMustard · 07/06/2024 13:56

It did snow on 2nd June 1975.
I was at school wearing my green striped summer dress and was freezing.

Droolylabradors · 07/06/2024 08:04

I'm delighted with this weather. Its hot enough and sunny enough to sit out in by the afternoon, but cold and crisp at night so amazing sleep with all the windows open. Heaven.

I agree. I’ve mentioned Scottish weather before , we’ve had some lovely sunny days mixed in with some more overcast ones , which is pretty normal here. In fact some cracking hot days too . Definitely no need for jumpers & heating , I’ve been in shorts and flip flops for weeks now . Nights have been a bit cooler but actually that suits me fine . I can’t say we’ve had non stop awful weather which stops me from going out.
