Just that really. And the fact that he likes Nigel Farage and agrees with him. I feel very disturbed.

''@Luio Judging someone on the basis that they are a member of a particular group is the definition of a bigot! ''

What a lot of nonsense...

With your logic you are implying that people should be OK with people who are members of Incel groups, Fascist groups or terrorist organisations!

Of course people are perfectly right to avoid those who don't share their values.

Neither of Farage’s wives have been English so I guess they were willing to overlook his xenophobia and he was willing to overlook their foreigness for the sake of love.

I haven't followed UKIP or what Nigel Farage is up to for a long time, but what is the evidence of him being xenophobic? Is it because he wants to reduce immigration? Can anyone point me towards something really unacceptable and disgusting he said?

I think the UK should reduce immigration because it's overcrowded. I hope that doesn't mean I am xenophobic.

Luio · 07/06/2024 09:20

@mycatisanarcissist lots of people accuse him of being xenophobic but judging by his marriages this probably isn’t the case. I was just pointing this out in a slightly roundabout way. I am quite pro immigration but totally understand that many have good reasons not to be.

Nope, she didn’t say that…

She said Farage is not pro the UK. I went on to expand on the point. That's how discussions work.

Doesn’t it terrify anyone that some people (who usually think of themselves as liberal and open minded and inclusive) want a society akin to North Korea, where only approved opinions are accepted and everyone else should be denied a voice and have ridicule and scorn poured on them?

Indeed, you've pretty much summed up all MN political threads. There really isn't a right or wrong and irrespective of what I vote, I'd like to think I'm a thoughtful and respectful person in my everyday life.

There's a certain irony and hypocrisy in people branding Farage or the Conservatives as intolerant while being extremely intolerant (and self righteous) themselves about anyone that doesn't vote Labour.

And it's gonna get a whole lot worse on here between now and July 4th. If you don't vote Labour, you're going to be labelled racist, bigoted and vile with no values or morals. That's Labour. Preaching tolerance, whilst preaching intolerance.

Getonwitit · 07/06/2024 09:27

My Husband liked Blair, i think Blair is a evil bastard. I have never felt the need to divorce my Husband over this.

It isn’t my logic, it is the actually the definition. Although I do think writing off everyone who votes for a mainstream political party puts you firmly in the bigot camp.

Scruffily · 07/06/2024 09:28

CountryBear · 06/06/2024 22:38

I’m about to vote for Nigel myself.

The political party we vote for doesn’t make us bad people. I have a lot of respect for others regardless of which party they pencil a tick next to. If I disagree with someone over a political issue, I tend just to not engage. Everyone has a right to their own view. And that includes me.

A partner voting for Nigel wouldn’t bother me at all. Just as a partner voting for Kier wouldn’t.

Edited

If you vote for a party of racists and bigots, it's just a trifle difficult to avoid the conclusion that that is because you agree with their racist and bigoted views. That doesn't exactly make you a good person, does it?

mycatisanarcissist · 07/06/2024 09:31

Thanks. I don't like some of the things he's said, having read that page. Other stuff he said that they seem to object to, isn't that offensive.

Having said that, I don't regret voting for UKIP in the early days as I was in favour of Brexit and they helped bring that about.

Well Farage got to the final on I'm a Celeb so more people quite like him than they will ever admit publicly - your fiancé isn't a freak of nature.

But for me it's this: if you've been together long enough to get engaged and have a kid WITHOUT this cropping up before then why does it suddenly matter now?? He can't be a political extremist or you'd already know his views. It sounds like he must be politically laid back in daily life or this would ALREADY be impacting your relationship / parenting etc. Surely he's entitled to his view as long as you're both in harmony otherwise.

I think politics have to align if it MATTERS a lot to the couple. If you've been rubbing along nicely up to now and were none the wiser before then who cares?

It's well known that he and his followers organised a massive vote-in for I'm a Celebrity, hence the fact he was so pissed off that he didn't win.

The very fact that he was so petty as to do that tells you an awful lot about him.

I'm afraid this would be a deal breaker for me.

Me too.

My late DP was the same, he was horrified when he found out his DM had voted for Brexit and wondered if she was developing dementia. Weirdly, his sister and her husband, both Tories and out and out racists, voted to Remain, which was equally shocking, albeit in a different way.

Scruffily · 07/06/2024 09:35

RubyWinehouse · 07/06/2024 01:35

Why? I like Nigel Farage and will be voting for him. What is wrong about being patriotic and wanting to follow British values?

Since when was racism a British value?

This comment is very silly.

"Horrified?"

"Developing dementia?"

Because she voted for Brexit?

You do realise that over 50% voted for the same thing?

Frankly, I think you are the one with the problem, not him. You're not broad-minded enough to accept that people have different political views. You can make a perfectly sensible, rational case for leaving the EU. It's quite reasonable to want all laws made in your own country. Personally, I would rather have stayed, and I voted remain. But I was about 40% for leaving, 60% for remaining. Your partner may have good reasons for voting UKIP. Some people actually think for themselves, you know. They don't just mindlessly regurgitate liberal-left opinions on everything.

I'd be far more concerned with how he treats real, flesh and blood humans in front of him. Is he kind? Does he feel sorry for the old guy next door whose wife just died? Is he polite to the shy teenager who serves him in Tesco? We've all meet smug, left-wing poseurs who spout trendy liberal views but are utterly vile to real people. I met dozens of them at university. Oh how they loved to be angry and outraged. But it was all a pose. As actual people, many of them were horrible.

With respect, if you're truly broad minded, then you should rightly be disgusted by the likes of Farage. You've got a catch 22 there.

Very proud not to tolerate racism and bigotry. Better to be "closed-minded" like that than to be a moral vacuum that insists those views have to be respected.

But can't you see that YOU are a bigot ?

Towerofsong · 07/06/2024 10:04

gannett · 07/06/2024 08:17

It's wild to me that you get cries of "red flag" on MN about every innocuous behaviour you could imagine from a man but the idea that someone's politics could be the reddest flag of all seems to be anathema.

I'm amazed that anyone could get all the way engaged to someone without having a very good idea about their political leanings but regardless of when you find out a man is a UKIP voter, the answer is the same: bin, immediately. I absolutely do not want to share my life with someone who is either a racist, or is OK enough with racist public rhetoric that they'll overlook it for whatever these "other reasons" might be.

I would assume if OP is engaged to the guy and surprised /shocked that he once voted UKIP, then to date he has not shown any racist views.

I don't follow UKIP but I would assume their entire platform isn't based on 'Vote for us, vote for racism.'. There are presumably some redeeming policies and before one bins an entire relationship based on a vote taken once however many years ago, it's perhaps worth finding out the reasons behind it.

Of course if they are politically very misaligned or he is a bigot then it's a LTB.

mycatisanarcissist · 07/06/2024 10:05

I think the people on here who are calling people bigots, because they once voted for UKIP, are bigots themselves. You know the type - agree with my politics, or else you're a bigot!

Step · 07/06/2024 10:05

Nope. Never..... no excuse for that behaviour. Ever ever ever ever.... voting for BoJo too unexcusable.
