To still be really sad and angry about Brexit

OptimismvsRealism · 03/06/2024 17:27

It really reduced the opportunities in my future and has achieved absolutely nothing of benefit for anyone else (besides disaster capitalists who made a mint off the financial manipulation effect). We haven't even avoided those stupid fecking tethers on the bottle lids!

When the extra immigration checks come in in October it's going to make every holiday a tiny bit upsetting.

And the new government won't even try to fix it.

Don't get me wrong I'm not one of those idealists singing ode to joy before breakfast but on a personal level it bloody sucks and seems likely it always will.

YANBU op.

the theft of opportunities for the young, by the old and the deluded, leaves me sad, angry and bitter.

The old and the deluded?
There's really no need to be offensive.
You know what - people have different political opinions, that's democracy.

I’ll take cover now as all the middle-class mums who hate queuing in certain lines when arriving for their ski trips take aim

Liberal, tofu munching elite with their avocado on toast is it?

Or perhaps just normal people now paying a lot more for reasonable quality food, energy and many more things that don’t particularly like swimming in shit at their local beach…

Of course we're not unwelcoming. We have one of the most diverse populations in the world, but the fact is we are a small island, we cannot let everyone who wants to live here come, it's not sustainable. Our land mass is smaller than France and Germany yet in the last 30 odd years our population percentage wise has grown more.

Uncontrolled immigration is a disaster. It puts pressure on existing resources such as schools, hospitals, surgeries, housing etc.

The UK's Refugee 'Invasion' is a Brexit-made Policy Failure

Beyond the political rhetoric, the scapegoating and displacement of responsibility, there is another story of a self-made policy failure intimately connected to Brexit.

The country is 3% poorer as a result of Brexit, which translates to less money for schools, hospitals, you name it, with the poorest most affected and the richest, as ever, able to protect themselves. Thinking it's about queuing for ski trips just makes you look unserious, I'm afraid.

If you think for one second that the economic landscape in the UK is as simple as that then I cannot help you.

Swimming in shit is mainly down to greedy utility companies paying huge dividends to their greedy shareholders.

StuffCanDoTwoThings · 03/06/2024 19:26

I won’t get over it either. Anyone who voted Brexit should pay for it through a Brexit tax and be cast out to live in Sunderland for the rest of their days

Corinthiana · 03/06/2024 19:26

What's the matter with Sunderland?

I quite enjoy tofu and avocado. Not everyone who cares about the future of working-class kids in the UK are plebs.

Haggardandhungry · 03/06/2024 19:27

I really don't understand why people who think Brexit is the best thing since sliced bread feel the need to jump on threads like this. You're not going to convince me it's great, just enjoy having your Brexit and let me be sad and cross!

And of course other European countries don't have "greedy utility companies" completely ignoring that our major utility companies are owned by European conglomerates

Which is sod all to do with Brexit. So what's your point?

If you think for one second that the economic landscape in the UK is as simple as that then I cannot help you.

I don't think it's simple at all, but a drop in GDP inevitably means less money for public services.

Maybe make an actual argument rather than just saying things like "if you think X then I cannot help you". There is compelling evidence that Brexit has made the country poorer https://obr.uk/forecasts-in-depth/the-economy-forecast/brexit-analysis/#assumptions.

Brexit analysis - Office for Budget Responsibility

Since the announcement of the EU referendum we have been producing analysis and writing about the potential effects of Brexit on the economy and public finances. We have compiled our assumptions, judgements and analysis on this page.

That has nothing to do with Brexit. The price of reasonable quality food has rocketed worldwide, not just in the UK. Sewage dumping also has nothing to do with Brexit

Nice try at deflecting, 6/10, fair effort.

Lassi · 03/06/2024 19:33

do you really want to live in an echo chamber @Haggardandhungry Like I said I voted remain but if you think everything that is wrong in the UK is down to Brexit that’s a huge oversimplification. It’s like the daft people who complain about Spain having better tomatoes (well yes, their climate is more suitable) and the sad faces at empty supermarket shelves (maybe the lorry broke down or the driver was ill?)
I can’t stand Farage and hate how this issue has divided the UK. Just look at the poster who thinks it’s ok to mock Sunderland.

Velvian · 03/06/2024 19:33

Yanbu @OptimismvsRealism . It was and remains devastating. David Cameron took the most reckless gamble. Although, I was as shocked as he was at the result.

All those people that didn't vote. 😭The don't really cares and people that thought the status quo was fine so they didn't need to bother, they really shafted us too.

You should always vote to mitigate against the extremists.

Justcallmebebes · 03/06/2024 19:21

Well get off your arse and go out and vote. We live in a democracy. We had a free and fair vote. The majority of those who voted, voted leave. What is your problem with that?

Rude!

I did vote.

I was asking a genuine question which was ‘did the majority of the population vote for Brexit?’

Lassi · 03/06/2024 19:36

Ok. I can see I have rattled a few cages. this is a genuine question. Seeing as someone has mentioned public services, why don’t you all care about austerity? It has destroyed this country. I would take the Brexit thing more seriously if you also all spoke up against this as well.

Justcallmebebes · 03/06/2024 19:05

So why wasn't it overturned if it was found to be fraudulent? Your post makes no sense

Please, surely you must know. For one reason only, because the Referendum was not legally binding, but only advisory. They could not cancel and 'advisory' Referendum as it had no legal, political status.

Did the majority of the population vote for Brexit? Maybe not, but the majority of the population who got off their arses and went out to vote did. Does that answer your question, without being rude?

Yes, worldwide, but much much worse in the UK BECAUSE of Brexit, and much higher cost of importing food, labour, fertilisers, etc, etc.

And yes, water treatment too, due to massive increase in cost of importing water treatment chemicals, especially with a failing Pound.

Are you completely unaware of the changes in law carried out by this (very brexy) govt to allow sewage dumping and general degradation of our waters?!?!

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/06/uk-safe-water-brexit-tories-environmental-standards-michael-gove

And as to quality food… let’s just say, if you were the EU and you had a close neighbor really quite dependent on their food supply coming from them (we are) and that neighbor had ZERO IMPORT OR QUALITY CONTROL…. Where would you flog all your rotting, substandard food?🤔

Cos I know if I was the EU, I’d send it to that neighbor. Which is why the food in the average local Tesco is now shite.

Slowly boiled frogs don’t notice it’s getting hot, though.

The UK had safe water. Then Brexit allowed the Tories to flush away our environmental standards | Stella Creasy

Michael Gove, who pledged to boost protections, now plans to scrap them. No wonder natural habitats are threatened, says Labour MP Stella Creasy

Why do you think the people on this thread don't speak up against austerity? Most of us on the left are also Remainers- opposed to both austerity (economically illiterate and ideologically driven) and Brexit (economically illiterate and ideologically driven).
