To still be really sad and angry about Brexit

OptimismvsRealism · 03/06/2024 17:27

It really reduced the opportunities in my future and has achieved absolutely nothing of benefit for anyone else (besides disaster capitalists who made a mint off the financial manipulation effect). We haven't even avoided those stupid fecking tethers on the bottle lids!

When the extra immigration checks come in in October it's going to make every holiday a tiny bit upsetting.

And the new government won't even try to fix it.

Don't get me wrong I'm not one of those idealists singing ode to joy before breakfast but on a personal level it bloody sucks and seems likely it always will.

Same. And even Brexit voters now say it hasn’t achieved anything they hoped for. It makes me so sad- we’re all poorer, with fewer opportunities, and made to look ridiculous as a country and for nothing. And the politicians who promoted it have just moved onto the next thing.

That makes me even crosser when I hear the ‘brexit hasn’t been done properly’ rubbish.
No it is exactly what remainers said it would be and when the extra checks on imports and going for holidays start it will be even worse.

gemsgv · 03/06/2024 18:39

I'm still mad that my life was pretty much switched off for 2 years to pander to other people's fears

Lunaballoon · 03/06/2024 18:39

Another one who will never forgive David Cameron and the Tories for paving the way for Brexit, which was then and still is, all about short-term political gain (fighting off UKIP/Reform).

Yes lockdown was insane but at least it isn't still going.

Yes I feel sorry for the people who were conned. They thought the NHS would be improved and everything else would carry on as before more or less.

Not a Thatcher fan but she was right about one thing : Referendums are a weapon of dictators usually and should have a high threshold for a vote to change things fundamentally.

Whatafustercluck · 03/06/2024 18:32

Those who are still sad and angry need to campaign and lobby to rejoin. It's done, it's shit, focus on change for the future.

The positive I am taking away from Farage standing again is that he will split the Tory vote and help them further along the line of political obsolescence.

As for wishing the man dead, well... I agree that's harsh. But then part of me remembers there's a hair's breadth between him and Hitler. How many have wondered how different things may have been had Hitler died sooner? Fascism creeps in, it doesn't thump on the door and announce its own arrival.

I think to compare Farage to Hitler is minimising those who died and suffered horrifically under the Naxi regime.

Why should we get over it though?

People were conned into voting for a lie. The country is a fucking binfire as a result.

I am still angry for my kids and the students I work with who have had so much taken away from them.

I want my European passport back.

No. I won't. It was a stupid decision and it's fucked us over for the long term. Racists are happy and that is not a good thing.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 03/06/2024 18:51

I will never get over it. I have family members who voted for brexit and I regularly ask them if they're happy now??? I'm sad for my kids and for the country. What a waste of time and a waste of resources. If people knew the amount of working hours and funding it took the civil service to get to this stage they would never think brexit was a good thing

Agree or don't agree but for heavens sakes do better than 'waaaaaah get over it'

Honestly, it would be easier if the people who supported it had the guts to admit they were wrong now!

Absolutely furious here - about the practicalities, about the message it sent that the UK is a horrible unwelcoming place, and the way it opened the floodgates for racism and nastiness.

fungipie · 03/06/2024 18:53

Sad, angry, and I grieve for our amazing Great country, and for my adult boys and our grandchildren. Don't think I'll ever recover, and would move to Europe if I could.

millymollymoomoo · 03/06/2024 18:54

For anyone who wants a European passport go work and live in the EI, it’s still possibke

im much much more worried about the prospect of a labour govt, more unrolled immigration, more gender ideology taking away and devaluing women’s rights, pro hanas supporting mps and protests,

things might not be great now but they’ll kill this country off for good

parkrun500club · 03/06/2024 18:54

It still makes me really angry too OP, especially when I go overseas and get directed to the "other passports" queue (although as we allow EU and other citizens to use our e-gates, I feel like they could return the favour - maybe with a Labour government, it could happen). That's the obvious personal impact, and is a bit of a first world problem, but the fact that my son's life chances have been shrunk is something I can never forgive.

parkrun500club · 03/06/2024 18:55

not sure how unless you can get a golden visa, have very specific skills, or live in Ireland first to get the EU passport. Not impossible, but very difficult.

You do realise the majority of the population voted for Brexit? So "you people" means the majority. Do you understand that?

whyhavetheygotsomany · 03/06/2024 18:45

Why? the damage is massive, and my adult children and grandchildren are paying such a heavy price. NO I will never 'get over it', because it will never stop to negatively affect them and this amazing country I love.

I assume you are older and don't have kids or grandkids. Because how anyone could vote to restrict their offspring's life chances and then celebrate the fact is beyond me.

You do know the vote has been proven to be fraudulent in the extreme, don't you?

They are never happy. They are thick racists who peddle some bullshit idea of patriotism and Britishness that never existed.

I agree. We won't rejoin the EU this decade but should seek a better relationship and co-operation. Look at solving the negatives such as for musicians, and tackling the people smugglers, are two that come to mind.

parkrun500club · 03/06/2024 18:58

You do realise the majority of the population voted for Brexit? So "you people" means the majority. Do you understand that

"you do realise" is an incredibly patronising phrase.

But in any event, you are wrong. It was a numerical majority of those who voted and should never have been hijacked the way it was and it was also meant to be advisory only. But the Tories leapt on it.

Justcallmebebes · 03/06/2024 18:59

fungipie · 03/06/2024 18:56

No, I don't know that. How is a democratic vote fraudulent because you don't like the result?
