I’m Autistic(Diagnosed) and I’ve never been a fan of noise but I’m becoming increasingly noise averse as I’m approaching middle age.

I don’t expect complete silence and I actively enjoy hearing two of my neighbours’ children play and having fun but some others seem to spend 3/4 of their time screaming. Why do so many children seem to scream now?

Plus there’s the thump of footballs, rusty trampoline springs, people playing loud music, fireworks and so many other loud intrusive noises.

I want to get away from it all but moving rurally(I’m semi rural) isn’t really the best option for me due to disabilities.

I think that I’m going to have to move to an over 50s complex as soon as I’m old enough. Though I fear the blaring televisions.

AIBU to wish that there was specific housing for quiet noise averse people like me?

Agree 100percent with you @NoMoreNoisePlease
The Thwump Thwump Thwump of fucking trampolines and the screaming

Trampolines sound like heavy people having sex on a rickety bed
THWUMP !CREAK squeak SQUEAK …THWUMP! CREAK SQUEAK…squeak
WHUMP!!

I love silence- birds singing- no grizzly screamy kids or barking dogs

A friend moved to a detached rural place as he hated kid noise so much - the shrill screaming.

Misophonia is real.

I'd move in if you add wind chimes to the banned list!

NoMoreNoisePlease · 02/06/2024 15:00

Wind chimes are a definite no.

Yes to a dog ban too!!!!

Chanelbasketballandchain · 02/06/2024 15:03

I am in!

I am horrified when I read some of the threads on here, where posters claim it's "normal" for kids to run around, kick balls, scream in a flat , where it's "normal" to put the appliances on at night and have loud parties.

I have kids who did live in a flat, screaming and being a social nuisance is not acceptable.

People are getting used to have their tv on all day, so loud, that they cant' even hear or notice their own kids. It's depressing.

Those inane twatty things are really annoying
Tinkly tinkle tinkle -or the bamboo ones than clunky- klonk in an irritating manner.

Thankfully they are hopelessly out of fashion now and not as popular.

Even Feng Shui people online advise against wind chimes outdoors now because of the annoyance factor.
None sound pleasant.

Adult only apartment complexes and housing estates are my dream.

I can’t stand kids and am always happy to pay premium to avoid them!

Same. I’d love to live in peace

lalaloopyhead · 02/06/2024 15:06

Yes please. We have new neighbours, a young couple who play music at volume in the garden...it so inconsiderate. We used to have a young family and I was never bothered by the noise of the kids playing in the garden. There is a barking dog somewhere near too which is so bloody loud but at least that is not constant I suppose.

Pin0cchio · 02/06/2024 15:07

Op have you tried ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones?

I have a silent dog- she never barks- I’ve never owned barky dogs as the sound is so annoying.

Certain types are given to inane yapping- horrible sound.

They are hot and uncomfortable- and can make one feel claustrophobic.
Also children’s screams aren’t cancelled well by them :(

Cathbrownlow · 02/06/2024 15:10

I agree with OP. Please can we add loud tuneless whistling (or any whistling at all) to the list too?

I live on a (very squashed together) new build estate with back gardens in a court yard design. One dog barks and they all start. It is so antisocial and unfair on the rest of us that just want to enjoy our gardens too. I wouldn’t mind but nobody even bothers to quieten their dogs, it’s almost like it’s seen as acceptable because the neighbours dog does it then its ok for theirs to bark too!

I agree. I've had to spend all my savings and mortgaged myself up to the eyeballs on buying a detached property as I almost had a breakdown living in an attached house with inconsiderate neighbours. (Also autistic)

I am seriously wondering if I too have autistic traits.
Noise, textures crowds really bother me

Noise drives me insane

I have to cover my ears if a siren drives by- it’s like an assault.

Noise generally is like an assault.
Now someone is mowing their grass with a loud mower- Something like a scythe at least makes a pleasant swooshing sound.

( An old boy used to scythe his lawn - so peaceful and beautiful to see)

fitzwilliamdarcy · 02/06/2024 15:13

THEY want everyone to be quiet but they need allowances to make noise.

THIS, exactly. And I think there are a lot of them about, sadly.

NoMoreNoisePlease · 02/06/2024 15:15

I agree entirely.

I never understand the need for children to run indoors. I was raised in a top floor flat and I wasn’t allowed to run indoors even when we moved to a house. We went outdoors or to soft play if I wanted to run. Not because my parents were tyrants but because they were considerate people, they didn’t want me falling and hurting myself or damaging and breaking items. I was still able to play quite happily.

Likewise it’s perfectly possible to enjoy music without subjecting your neighbours to a constant thumping bass.

Too many noisy assholes about.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2024 15:19

It's pretty quiet where we live. All the houses are detached and most of our neighbours are retired.

It is the first really nice day this year and the most noise I have heard is tractors driving through the village. No doubt the farmers are making up for lost time.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/06/2024 15:19

I live in a lovely quiet area, with quiet neighbours in houses with very thick walls. I have to look outside to see if their cars are outside to see if my neighbours are actually in. (And no, I'm not telling you where it is...)

But my argument against Quiet Living enclaves is - what if you are generally a quiet person but want to have visitors who might be a bit noisy? Or you want a party - strictly a one off but it might get loud?

Even quiet people aren't quiet permanently.

NoMoreNoisePlease · 02/06/2024 15:20

so sick of people trying to police other people to their wants

Yes heaven forbid that anyone wants to live their life while simultaneously being considerate of others. It’s perfectly possible to do both if you aren’t a selfish wanker.

Betws isn't quiet. That house is on the main road up the mountain. Constant speeding cars, loud motorbikes and people driving like twats. I'd rather hear kids playing than live there.

Switzerland already has these rules to enforce peace and quiet especially in evenings and on weekends.

The rules are followed to the letter by the population who all vote for, agree with and appreciate them!

This is from a Swiss Government website;
“Peace and quiet is important to our quality of life. It enables people to relax, sleep well, concentrate, and to hear each other. Noise, meanwhile, is intrusive, and causes illness.”

Great idea! If kids are banned there will be no noisy parties until 3am, no loud shagging and no slamming of doors when they go in and out to have a fag. Oh wait... Hmm
