DP called me a middle class racist

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

93% of kids go to state school. The 7% of parents who pay for private education have had fees increased loads over the last few years, under the current government - look at the fees for most private schools over 10 years - they will just have to suck up the increase - just like the 93% have had to suck up the impact of austerity and a Tory government on schools.

Ferngardens · 31/05/2024 21:00

The conservatives have incredibly racist policies and put in place the mechanisms for the windrush scandal. Is everyone that votes Tory racist? Well no, just like voting Labour doesn't make you not a racist. But I think it makes sense for everyone to wonder if their vote is going to perpetuate racism or inequality, for many people a vote for conservatives is that. Is it worth the damage to society for cheaper private school, well who knows, especially given the cost of everything else. I'm also mixed race, won't vote Tory. They might have an ethnically diverse leadership but they're people that are happy to kick the ladder down and divide people.

Sorry, I'm just not following ....
Why did he call you racist?

Because, allegedly, anyone who is a Tory voter is a frothing at the mouth racist

Still cannot get my head around anyone voting for a party that covered up their leader partying whilst people laid dying during Covid. Baffling.

But hey, long as they don’t tax us all for private school places right!

Get a grip. There was no partying and you know it

Againname · 31/05/2024 21:06

Depressing really this sort of thing imo. I don't know if they're a minority even for their generation but I know a number of older couples (I'm talking people in their 70s and 80s and older) where one has voted Tory and the other Labour. Without letting it affect their marriages. I genuinely wonder if they're unusual or if things have changed in more recent times?

The problem with an unequal society, particularly one which has been made greatly more unequal over the last 14 years, is that it makes the opportunities that private education can bring more desirable. I can't condemn any parent for wanting the best for their child, for wanting to give them a leg up in the world especially if the parents have struggled and worked hard to be successful themselves.

Unfortunately, it feeds the beast. While I have sympathy for people who wouldn't be able to privately educated their children with fee increases, the VAT policy will be a step in re-levelling the playing field. And theres a huge argument that privately schools need to learn to manage their finances better if they're so threatened by VAT. Fees have already increased directly as a result of Tory governance.

Why should the public subsidise the exclusionary education of the few?

There’s no subsidy
Education isn’t currently taxed
Less well off parents will move to state creating a more elitist private education going back to the mid 50s
It will make no money ( happy to see some real figures on this,I have read many reports that say it will not make any and possibly lose money)
There will be nothing for state just a bigger bill with more kids @£8k/ had and more sen kids @£14k/ had.

Crack on Labour it’s as barmy as expecting doctors and nurses to work more hours to cut the waiting lists……
without asking doctors 😆🤣😆😆🤣🙄😳

Meggie2008 · 31/05/2024 21:06

I wouldn't marry anyone who would even remotely consider voting Tory.
I'm Scottish to be fair though, they seem to be more hated up here.

I also grew up on a very rough council estate so this is why he thinks the joke is extra punchy due to irony!

It is ironic though...so you grew up in a council estate, come from an immigrant background...and wish to vote for tories?

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 31/05/2024 21:09

FrogandTrumpet · 31/05/2024 20:05

Why would anyone who wants to tighten up on immigration vote Conservative? They’ve been in power for over a decade and the result is the current shambles of a system. What makes you think they’ll do anything to sort that out?

Edited

This.

And voting for the Tories for their immigration policy is ... racist.

DontWheeshtMe · 31/05/2024 21:10

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:32

Genuinely baffled by this. I know HARDCORE labour supporters (members, marches etc) that think private education is great. One actually introduced me to his girlfriend as privately educated as if it was a character trait?? Never heard this in my life

Our PS were full of Labour supporters.
Its just bollocks spouted by people without any knowledge of those they are generalising about.

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 21:11

Fab238 · 31/05/2024 21:07

Yes exactly that. Surely that says a lot about how piss poor labour have become?

Tory policies align with what I believe to be best for the country. AS the descendant of immigrants, AS someone who’s came from poverty and is now “successful” AS someone who’s attended state school and AS someone who has children in private education

Exactly. Politics has become so divisive and hate filled in the last 20 years or so. Surely you can have different views without the division and hatred?

Whatever happened to " I disagree with what you say but respect your right to say it?"

lol are you joking? There was LOADS. And there’s plenty of evidence of them flouting the rules whilst I couldn’t be with my dying Nan. So let’s not defend a party that continue to defend the rich and punish the poor shall we.

I don't necessarily agree with his statement, but you've got to expect this kind of thing when you make selfish choices. People will look down on you.

OP supports woman’s rights
How is supporting the safety of all women and girls ie 51% of the population selfish.

OneMoreHobnobPlease · 31/05/2024 21:15

So OP, it seems like you've benefited greatly, yet not happy to give others that very same opportunity. Interesting.

I would say not supporting women by voting Labour is selfish…..incredibly so!

Voting Tory means she doesn’t support women’s rights.

Only idiots think tories are good for women

cansu · 31/05/2024 21:18

Interesting reasoning. I can't really comment easily on someone voting tory because of illegal immigration. It just sounds like you have bought into a tory / Nigel Farage style / Daily Mail nonsense. The tories have done absolutely nothing to slow illegal immigration so you seem a bit gullible. Worrying about the VAT on school fees and hysterical stuff about sex ed - well I don't really know what to say. Personally I am focusing on cost of living, proper funding and reform of public services for all.

This with knobs on. How on earth could anyone have observed the government for the past several years and concluded “yes, exactly what we need are 5 more years of this”

It’s mind-blowing.

OneMoreHobnobPlease · 31/05/2024 21:20

Oh yes, and as for the "but Labour, but Labour, but Labour"...... wait until you find out who's been in charge for the last 14 years.

You come across very very naive.

JLou08 · 31/05/2024 21:21

I think your DP is making jokes because he has hugely lost respect for you and doesn't know how to communicate it.

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/05/2024 21:21

Wild horses wouldn’t drag me to vote Tory and I do think the way they have manipulated public opinion around immigration has leveraged racism at times. But it doesn’t follow that anyone who votes Conservative is a racist and it’s offensive and stupid to claim they are.

Your DP is an ignorant arse.
