DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

I find it ironic when the people who call you bigoted are the ones who are so intolerant that they’ll cut a person off based on how they vote. It’s childish and shows a lack of intelligence.

Agrees with private education? What is there to not agree with? Doing what’s essentially best for our kids?

and no im not voting Tory to save on school fees, we don’t fall into the bracket of being on our arses or having to take our kids out of their schools due to the increase, but there are plenty that will and it’s frankly appalling.

Can you explain this a little
please? What is appalling? Private education is a choice and a privilege for the wealthy. Now you will have to be little
more wealthy to afford it. Surely that is what it boils down too. Many many people work very very hard and can never afford private school. Does that mean they care less about their children? I care about the 93% of children in state education and believe they should be getting by the best possible education. If a few less people are able to buy privileges for their children are the expense of others, I won’t lose a lot of sleep over it.

Oh, come on now. You know that Labour supporters do not usually agree with private education like your husband does.
I'm not trying to get into a row about this.
I'm saying he's being hypocritical.

Genuinely baffled by this. I know HARDCORE labour supporters (members, marches etc) that think private education is great. One actually introduced me to his girlfriend as privately educated as if it was a character trait?? Never heard this in my life

Apart from all those Labour MPs who were privately educated and send their own children to private schools.

Do as I say not as I do.

Canyoudomegreaterharm · 31/05/2024 20:34

I have been left voting all my life, my parents despite being in a Tory majority, their whole lives and boomer generation etc instilled in me that those in misfortune should be supported.

The labour Party have NO control over the media and bots please no one be influenced by this spam.

Yes, if that's the case - they are being hypocritical.
I just think it's strange that this husband would have a pop at his wife when he's just as bad if not worse.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 31/05/2024 20:35

I wouldn't want to talk to someone who looks at the current shitshow this shower have created and votes for more of the same. Someone so utterly devoid of human compassion is not someone I'd want to associate with.

DontWheeshtMe · 31/05/2024 20:35

Dh and I are exactly the same.
Hes always voted Labour
Ive voted mainly Labour, never Conservatives.

Dh not bothered about policy he will vote Labour whatever,
I am bothered about policy and agree with all of your reasons OP and I’m voting Conservative.

He thinks I’m far right. He’s started to get angry about it.
He actually said ‘ I don’t care who you vote for as long as it’s not Tory’🤣🤣🤣🤣like it’s any of his business. He’s basically voting against me as a women…..once I pointed this out he’s shut up now.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowItHaveAGin · 31/05/2024 20:36

Bar the tax on private schools everything else you describe has happened under a tory government.

If you're voting purely to save some cash on private education then just say that, because you're certainly not voting tory for the wellbeing of the country. Your kids are going to be the ones growing up with no NHS, hopefully they won't become disabled because they will be utterly fucked under this shower of twats.

SadOrWickedFairy · 31/05/2024 20:36

Woahtherehoney · 31/05/2024 20:14

Still cannot get my head around anyone voting for a party that covered up their leader partying whilst people laid dying during Covid. Baffling.

But hey, long as they don’t tax us all for private school places right!

Can't get my head round why people voted for a Party that took us into an illegal and divisive war but they did and that Party was voted back in to power.

Are you for real? You seriously think that Labour voters would be supporting private education?

FFS.

For the record, I am mixed race. My grandparents are from the windrush generation. I have both African and Caribbean heritage as well as Irish English.

yes I have children at private school

Windrush, so the people the government tried to deport (and in some cases did) despite having leave to remain, you’re voting for people who want to deport members of your family, deny them medical care, lock them up and prevent them from re-entering the UK.

DontWheeshtMe · 31/05/2024 20:38

GrouachMacbeth · 31/05/2024 20:06

Unfortunately the term "racist" is being used by some ignorant turds to shut down anyone whom they cannot persuade to their echo chamber. This terrible state of affairs means that genuine racism is not taken as seriously as it should be.

👏👏👏 Agree

Do you think that a Conservative government would have disagreed with Bush and stayed out of the war? Really?

Megera · 31/05/2024 20:38

It’s not a choice I’d make but it’s also not racist, is it?

DontWheeshtMe · 31/05/2024 20:39

You are very naive.

I just think it’s bizarre to say when I’m extremely close with his family, especially his parents and young cousins. I do a lot for them, we have a great relationship, they really love me as I do them. But they apparently wouldn’t speak to me about a vote?

I’m extremely close to my family

But cut off loads after Brexit and I would do so again if any voted Tory.

It proves you’re a type of person I don’t really want much to do with.

So I can quite believe him

I don’t know them but your DH does. I’m not saying if it’s right or wrong in your particular situation but I would pay attention to what he’s saying: this info might affect your relationship with them .
A lot of people who voted Brexit kept it to themselves because others who voiced it got a lot of abuse. The same with gender identity issues.
I would have a chat with him when sober about how you are going to survive until the 4th July with such polar political views. You need some sort of ground rules.
There was a thread recently about is it possible to have different political views and stay together, something like that. Very interesting.
It wouldn’t be possible for me but some people managed.

Tbf there’s a couple of posters on here that do both

I can’t see why but they do

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 20:40

So he’s saying you’re only voting for policies that benefit you personally, not the party that will benefit the majority. That makes you persona non grata with me.

You must remember when Dianne Abbott was ridiculed for telling us we should be sending our children to state schools while hers were being privately educated?

DontWheeshtMe · 31/05/2024 20:41

Corinthiana · 31/05/2024 20:10

So I'm guessing you're voting conservative because your children are at a private school.

Read her original post.
OP is voting Conservative for many reasons

CactusUmbrella · 31/05/2024 20:41

Hello OP. I don't mean this in a "I know better than you way" and I certainly am not here to attack you for your political beliefs. But the "sex ed" that the conservatives are looking to remove from schools isn't what you're thinking. The only thing children are taught at the age they want to remove this for is how to keep their bodies safe. How to say no. What is appropriate and inappropriate in terms of touching etc. How families look different (two mums, no mum, etc). Your young children aren't being taught anything explicit. This "sex" education is helping keep our children safe. If we remove it, children may not have the tools to speak up if they are abused or groomed.

I think lots of people don't realise this, and I just wanted to make sure you knew.
