DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

@Corinthiana honestly I don't have a huge problem with private schools per say. If people are successful enough to be able to afford to send their children to private schools then so be it.

The issue I have is that people would vote for this utterly corrupt shower of shit to avoid paying a little bit extra, when they're already paying for the fees.

Voting in this utterly disgusting lot again, to save a few quid, most can probably afford anyway. Nope

Exactly my thoughts 💯

I don't necessarily agree with his statement, but you've got to expect this kind of thing when you make selfish choices. People will look down on you.

Starlight7080 · 31/05/2024 20:44

So all the kids in crumbling schools that can't afford workbooks, equipment, decent food . Enough teachers and so on...they should continue to be underfunded by the Torys .
But you shouldn't have to pay more for private school!!
I call bs on all other reasons.
And you have to be a special kind of stupid to believe anything the torys are saying they will do right now .

BIWI · 31/05/2024 20:36

Genuinely baffled by this. I know HARDCORE labour supporters (members, marches etc) that think private education is great. One actually introduced me to his girlfriend as privately educated as if it was a character trait?? Never heard this in my life

Are you for real? You seriously think that Labour voters would be supporting private education?

FFS.

Can’t keep up with all replies.

can you explain to me why they wouldn’t? instead of silly comments like this? I don’t THINK labour sups would be for private education, I KNOW ones that are

side note can we keep this thread civil and not mudslinging or name calling?

Do you think that a Conservative government would have disagreed with Bush and stayed out of the war? Really?

Who knows? That is just whataboutery, same as saying if Labour had been in power during Covid they would/wouldn't have done xyz
^^

BIWI · 31/05/2024 20:46

Silly comments?! I think you're the silly one @Whoswhoof if you really don't understand how private education is absolutely the antithesis of being a (true) Labour supporter.

Paying for education (also healthcare) is about privilege.

pointythings · 31/05/2024 20:46

I don't have a problem with private education, I just happen to think it's a luxury and therefore there's nothing wrong with people paying a bit more for it (though ideally there would be dispensation for specialist SEN schools).

But anyone who thinks the Tories are better for women's rights is indeed very naive. They've all but legalised rape, for starters.

Tortiemiaw · 31/05/2024 20:46

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 20:40

So he’s saying you’re only voting for policies that benefit you personally, not the party that will benefit the majority. That makes you persona non grata with me.

Ditto. I wouldn't just comment vaguely if my husband announced he was voting tory. I would genuinely leave him

I know. I hate the whataboutery, but not voting Labour because of a war none of them were responsible for joining because it was 20 years ago does seem a bit strange.
The House of Commons had the vote, not just the party of government anyway!

BananaLambo · 31/05/2024 20:13

Why are you voting Tory because of gender identity? The mess we’re in now happened under their watch. They’ve been in power for 14 years. All this mess is directly their choosing and doing.

Conservatives haven’t changed policy to allow transwomen into womens spaces, sports and rape centres etc. Stonewall pushed the issue and everyone got on side.
The Conservatives are the only ones pushing back to support women.
Starmers disgusting policy of quicker gender ids will put married couples suddenly in single sex marriages without giving them any chance of divorcing beforehand. The Conservatives give an interim cert to allow couples time to divorce / annul before their partner can legally change gender.
I haven’t even started on all those women with penises.

If a problem doesn’t exist there’s no way of dealing with it. The Conservatives didn’t create the problem they are, however, the only party pushing back on this insanity that takes away women rights

Againname · 31/05/2024 20:51

Your DP is aware that the current Tory leader is Asian, whilst the current Labour leader is white (and middle class), isn't he?

Separately, immigration controls aren't racist. Every country in the world has immigration controls, and mass immigration is an issue that does need to be looked at. I've mentioned this on previous threads. It''s not easy to talk about as, minority of genuine bigots aside, nobody wants a hostile environment or encouragement of hate, but the issue especially the impact on disadvantaged communities shouldn't be ignored.

The issues are no different to those regularly brought up on here and elsewhere regarding regional within-UK 'blow ins'.

As I've said, there are a minority of genuine bigots who don't like 'people not from here' (from abroad, or regional within-UK 'blow-ins') but most are simply concerned about added pressures to local jobs, housing, and public services. There's a need for grown-up and calm discussions to look for solutions, that are compassionate to all and avoid hate but also take into account the needs of people already here especially the less advantaged.

SadOrWickedFairy · 31/05/2024 20:51

You miss the point I was making @Corinthiana posters saying how can you vote Tory after this, this and this and yet people voted Labour after they dragged the country into an illegal and divisive war which apparently a majority of the country were against.

The party of Government had a quite reasonable majority so were always going to get it through the HoC.

101Nutella · 31/05/2024 20:51

YABU to vote Tory for immigration purposes when they have failed to control or sort it for 14 years 😂😂
anything said now is just sound bites and empty promises.

but I can see why your partner has mocked you a bit. Your reasons are your own but that party has failed on many of those issues so to keep voting them seems ignorant at least.

This is very tiresome. She’s saying she knows labour supporters who are in favour of private education. It’s not up to you to say they are not true labour supporters. Diane Abbot is the ultimate lefty and sent her kid to private school.

Right. I thought they had the most diverse cabinet in political history

Which seems to hate immigrants. I believe the phrase is pulling the ladder up behind you.

I’d think the same if my hitherto Labour voting husband announced he was voting Tory, too, tbh.

BIWI · 31/05/2024 20:57

Well they may think they are @EasternStandard ...

BIWI · 31/05/2024 20:57

SavingTheBestTillLast · 31/05/2024 20:58

Naran · 31/05/2024 20:21

Just tell him you’ve changed your mind and will vote the same as him. Then at the ballot box, vote whatever you want. He’ll never know.

Why would anyone do that, because we have to agree with our menfolk. Is that the Labour way

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 31/05/2024 20:59

Immigration in general has doubled under the Tories and the "small boats problem" is a direct result of Brexit.

I just think it’s bizarre to say when I’m extremely close with his family, especially his parents and young cousins. I do a lot for them, we have a great relationship, they really love me as I do them. But they apparently wouldn’t speak to me about a vote?

He’s taunting you to vote his way.
Hes a bully
