To push ds into claiming

Lacky301 · 31/05/2024 16:44

Ds has just finished uni and never worked through me and ex dp give him £450 a month between us plus I've always bought him the odd thing and gave a bit extra here and there.
Me and his dad are seperated and his dads just received notification that he will now be charged full council tax as ds has finished uni I'm under strain financially. I've told ds he needs to claim universal credit until he finds a job but he keeps saying I want my results first. Am I wrong in pushing him to claim to take some pressure off me and dp. Fwiw he would get around £370 per month as living at home.

You don’t need to push him to claim universal credit, you need to push him to get a job.

thanKyouaIMee · 31/05/2024 16:46

Can't he be pushed into getting a job?

VickyEadieofThigh · 31/05/2024 16:47

Isn't he applying for jobs?

Boomer55 · 31/05/2024 16:47

He needs a job.🤷‍♀️

TeaKitten · 31/05/2024 16:48

Also I don’t think it would be £370, how old is he?

Overthebow · 31/05/2024 16:49

Yeh shouldn’t be claiming UC, he should get a job. Ridiculous that he could claim without even trying.

Lacky301 · 31/05/2024 16:49

Of course yes I am pushing him to find a job which he does want but it can take time to find one so I'm hoping universal credit will tide him over until he finds one.

How long are you expecting it to take? Bar jobs are easy to come by this time of year.

Lacky301 · 31/05/2024 16:51

He wants to use up the rest of his accommodation which he has until August then come home properly.

Outnumbered83 · 31/05/2024 16:51

What is he actually doing to get a job? If he wants to wait for his results prior to claiming, then it stands to reason he would take the same stance when trying to find a job to tide him over too.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 31/05/2024 16:51

Bar job
Coffee shop
Supermarket

Even if only zero hours, he's got away with not working all through uni. He needs to step up now.

BingoMarieHeeler · 31/05/2024 16:52

He can get 2 months + of bar work, supermarket work etc in his uni accommodation, and that will help him get a job in his next place of residence. Benefits shouldn’t be the default really. Loads can happen in a couple of months - he might decide to work his way around the world, find someone at one job to help him get a job somewhere else, might find his passion, might do anything in that time!

I don't know from experience it can be difficult even getting a response in job applications.

Why would he bother claiming or look for a job when you and his father are keeping him in clover?

Overthebow · 31/05/2024 16:54

Wait, he’s finished uni? Didn’t he apply to all the grad schemes earlier in the year for an August or September start? He’s a bit behind if not, the next lot of grad schemes are usually for the following year. He may just need to get a job, any job, which shouldn’t be too hard to get or take too long, to tide him over until he finds a decent grad job. UC shouldn’t be an option.

Octavia64 · 31/05/2024 16:54

He needs to get a temporary job while he does his graduate applications.

This is completely normal.

Doing applications for graduate schemes takes up a lot of time so many people choose not to do it in their third year and instead get a temporary job - admin, bar work etc - and apply for the next year.

I'm not aware of those

The benefits system is clearly for those who just find handouts easier.

Not!!!!

If I needed a job, I could find one today. Fgs stop teaching him to think he can just coast off other people all his life, its atrocious.

Cadela · 31/05/2024 16:56

He’d have to do and prove 35 hours a week of job searching and attend weekly work coach meetings with uc for very little money, when he could just get a job (any job!) and earn a decent monthly wage.

Ds doesn't expect to be kept he does intend to work meaning I trust him to not take advantage.

No but he will be...

flamebrick · 31/05/2024 16:57

He'll need to get his finger out if he wants a graduate job for August — the vast majority of schemes will have started recruiting in October/November and will have already made most of their offers. He needs to jump on Gradcracker ASAP as time is not on his side. If he fancies a graduate job and misses the boat for August, it'll likely be another year before he'd start earning (or at best, a January start)

Ponderingwindow · 31/05/2024 16:58

Yes, he needs to apply for benefits.

he also needs to treat job searching like a full-time job. It’s reasonable to be searching in his career field for now, but he really should have started before he finished university. Up every morning, researching companies and positions and figuring out where to apply.

The first few applications will be slow, but as he gets into the swing of things they will get faster. Have him save everything in word documents so he can reuse it as appropriate for each different online application.

LIZS · 31/05/2024 16:59

Where is he studying, are there any seasonal jobs or internships there? Grad schemes are not always open or start recruiting until autumn. If he has a career path linked to his studies has he made any contacts or have relevant work experience ?

Graciiee · 31/05/2024 17:00

He needs any job right now, he could have a job in days if he actually tried.
