Tesco not delivering because I had no id!!

Vius · 27/05/2024 18:41

Just learnt that apparently you now have to have id to accept home deliveries.

Annoyingly DP was out with my car (his is at the garage) which had my license in.

Im 31 ffs and no booze or matches etc were in the shop this time.

The teenager delivery boy said he could not deliver! He asked if I had id or if my parents were home. Now I have no wrinkles on account of using retinol in addition to having gained 3 stone since Covid due to depression. My face has very much started to sag (looking to get threads and lose weight sooner rather than later). No way you need to “think 25” with me.

What is the point?? Was this a power trip??

Now have to fork out on a takeaway for my dinner

Er, Aldi and Lidl are pretty much the same price as Tesco!

@LieutOliviaBenson

Utter nonsense. Tesco are waaaay more expensive than Aldi or Lidl.

The 'price match' to Aldi and Lidl Tesco do, is usually on about 100 items in any given week, out of about 20,000!😆

LittleBrownBaby · 27/05/2024 22:53

@DownNative I have a Tesco delivery once a week every week and almost always order booze, and often medicine, lighters etc. I have never once been asked for ID (yet get ID'd in the shop).

They only ever ask me for my DOB though. Never for physical ID

Even Amazon? The drivers are at risk of falling foul of "mystery shoppers," who Amazon bribe with vouchers to wheedle their delivery out of drivers. I went to more than one house, with a couple of cars on the drive, where neither adult could produce a driving licence.

i always left, as there were drivers who gave in, got reported and were sacked.

But Amazon deliver to lockers, which can be picked up by anyone (eg if a parent sends their teen to the locker with the code) making a mockery of the rule that if the parcel is handed over to a person they must have ID.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/05/2024 22:57

I send DS stuff sometimes to his university house and he has never been asked for ID - he's 20 and I send booze.

Those drivers run the risk of disciplinary action doing that. One day they'll fail a test purchase and will be required to do training as will every single driver as it takes one to be an idiot.

If it keeps happening, Tesco will investigate which can lead to being fired. And possibly buggered by the peelers as test purchases are carried out by them in store as well as at customers homes.

Sounds like the shop staff are doing their jobs correctly whereas the delivery drivers aren't. I'd be asking you for ID and, if you told me other drivers don't, I'd feed that back to management.

Especially as you almost always order age restricted items.

We’re not struggling. Weekly shop has increased roughly 25% in the past year. I have just become engaged and hope to have kids once we are married. A move to a bigger home is also on the table. Fiancé and I are just keeping an eye on the pennies by having more larder meals like chickpea curries/jacket potatoes etc.

I have also said we are not terribly remote. Can be in a large commuter town within 15 mins.

Bought a kfc to soak up the booze after a bank holiday bbq. And since I do not currently own a crystal ball how could I have predicted there was going to be an issue with Tesco and that I should stock up on groceries instead of buying a bucket of chicken?

Jeez why am I getting attacked over really innocuous things?

Edited

Are KFC and BBQ not the proper meals you were looking forward to? 😐

mondaytosunday · 27/05/2024 23:23

I once was stuck in traffic and Waitrose left it at my door, without the booze though!
@LauraNorda I rarely comment on ridiculous posts but yours - I mean really what was the point? It's better for the environment to have it delivered rather than drive there for a start, it employs people (the picker and the driver), saves time, saves money (as you are not tempted by items when cruising the store). is convenient, and is great for those who can not, for whatever reason, get to a shop.

Oh 🤔 maybe just a random check then

I was looking forward to a home cooked meal that wasn’t made from store cupboard ingredients and things from the back of the freezer. Is that okay with you?

BBQ and drunk KFC are tasty but not comfort food to me.

Reason UK needs ID cards. It's the size of a credit card. Had to show it in hospital last week where I live. Excellent service by the way.

The reason people come over on boats is cos no ID is needed.

Rainyblue · 27/05/2024 23:38

Does this mean if you don’t have photo ID you can’t get an internet shopping delivery?
My 84 yr old Mum gets a Sainsbury’s order every week - she doesn’t have a driving licence (can’t drive) or a passport (doesn’t travel anywhere) and I am sure she’s never been asked for ID. I don’t know what she could show them if she was asked?

Your mother is well over 25, so extremely unlikely she'll be asked to show ID! She'll get her shopping without it.

No, Think 25 only applies if a driver believes the person at door appears to be under 25 years old. They'll ask for ID then. Some 31 year olds do look under 25 - I've had one who was gobsmacked at first, but she actually does look under 25!

Struggling for money so you have to make a weekly shop last a fortnight but you've had a takeaway tonight (despite being terribly rural and remote) and left your bag in your car yesterday as you were holding a KFC? Could you not have bought the Tesco shop on the way home instead of KFC? 🤷‍♀️

Takeaways reach where other delivery firms can't.

That should be like a tag line or something.

Deliveroo or Uber eats or JustEat or something.

🤪

DownNative · 27/05/2024 19:19

Very much doubt he told you it's a new policy as its been around for years. I know as I am one. 🧐

Read your T&Cs.

Oh, and feel flattered he thought you looked under 25! 🤷‍♂️

We have never been asked for ID for a Tesco delivery and we have been having them for years.

We get deliveroo. Didn’t realise the pp was questioning that. We are not in the sticks - literally the first village you hit on the road out of the nearest town. We get deliveroo! I am shocked that drivers accept our orders though. Felt very sorry for one guy that cycled to us in the pouring rain on a bike a few months ago.

Bus pass?

hot2trotter · 28/05/2024 00:21

Strange. I get my Tesco food shop delivered every week and have never once been asked for ID, even the times where I HAVE bought age restricted items.

Drivers working bank holiday.
Supervisors would be.
Managers would be.

I would imagine the call centre would be also.

The person that picked it and packed it.
The person that checked it and loaded it.
The person sorting the vans out.
The driver.
The person who will unpack it.
The person who will restock it all.
The person adding it all back to the stores inventory.
The supervisor finding out why the driver didn't deliver it.

They'll all be busy...
If this is some power trip from some kid that's never met you, he's going to be making a lot of work for people you've never met and explaining himself to someone you've never met.

It's unlikely.

It's more likely imo, he was doing his job as best he can.
He might have had a chat recently because he dropped off an order with paracetamol in it and didn't check age.

Is there still a Tesco call centre? There used to be a very good one, but I'm sure I couldn't find a number for it recently - I thought the number used to be on the email receipt. I hope that was a temporary glitch (on their part or mine) - has anyone used the call centre recently?

Oh, & neither DH nor I has ever been asked for i.d., even when we order booze & matches.

OneLemonOrca · 28/05/2024 03:08

Asda and Tesco have both done this to me. So annoying. I have a separate ID handy

GreenTeaLikesMe · 28/05/2024 03:39

OP, you mention that a move is on the cards - I think that is a good idea and I would definitely try and sort out the above situation before you have kids.

I know you are saying that your area is not remote as the crow flies. But if it’s not actually possible or safe to get anywhere without a car down that fast, bendy rural road, it doesn’t really make much difference whether the Tesco Express is 12 minutes away or 120 minutes away - it means that if the car is gone, you’re basically trapped and this is likely to get, at best, frustrating, and at worst, potentially kind of dangerous. It also means you have no alternative to getting in the car with a baby on what sounds like quite a dangerous road. even if you’ve been up all night and are cross-eyed with sleep deprivation etc.

I think there is more to it than that, but yes, there needs to be a national conversation about ID cards. For a number of reasons.

It’s one of those things that many traditional Conservatives absolutely HATE and are convinced that the public hates it too, that the British are “not a ‘papers, please’ society.” In fact, polls mostly show that the British are fine with ID cards as long as they don’t have to carry them everywhere. Most European countries have ID cards. In an age of internet data being scooped up by God knows what, it seems almost quaint to worry about ID cards.

SpringerFall · 28/05/2024 04:00

Yes it is a power trip, when they start their job the bosses go through a list of 'things we came up with just to annoy and inconivence customers because we are not busy enough and our sole purpose in life is to be as annoying as possible'
