Tesco not delivering because I had no id!!

Just learnt that apparently you now have to have id to accept home deliveries.

Annoyingly DP was out with my car (his is at the garage) which had my license in.

Im 31 ffs and no booze or matches etc were in the shop this time.

The teenager delivery boy said he could not deliver! He asked if I had id or if my parents were home. Now I have no wrinkles on account of using retinol in addition to having gained 3 stone since Covid due to depression. My face has very much started to sag (looking to get threads and lose weight sooner rather than later). No way you need to “think 25” with me.

What is the point?? Was this a power trip??

Now have to fork out on a takeaway for my dinner

I was ID'd the other day, I am 60. I had never been asked before.

Er, Aldi and Lidl are pretty much the same price as Tesco!

Er they absolutely are not

Er, yes they are! Tesco does "Aldi price-match". They're also monumentally crap when it comes to veggie and gluten-free food.

Sounds like a jobs worth who has the wrong end of the stick . You need id for age restricted products - complain might get something free

It's unlikely, I did Amazon deliveries during lockdown and if it said on the delivery app that ID was required, it had to be photographed, or it was instant dismissal. Believe me, he didn't want to stand there arguing and take a load home - they'll want to know why.

There was no common sense allowed, I had to take an 88 year old man's birthday whisky back, as he had no ID and couldn't get a friend or neighbour to come round with something. It was awful for me.

@Balloonhearts thank you for supporting someone working in retail (I haven't done since aged 21 so have no vested interest).

Of course if the OP thinks rules don't apply to them, I would assume they are one of the few on MN who still intend to vote Tory.

They actually live among us...

Shan5474 · 27/05/2024 21:32

So there was nothing age restricted in the order? I was IDed the other day for an Asda order (I’m 32) and when I queried what was age restricted the driver said the system doesn’t tell them. So if I’d had no ID I’m guessing I wouldn’t have been able to have any of it because neither of us knew what the item in question was. I’m now pretty sure it was razors which seems a bit OTT

Most delivery like Royal Mail, Hermes or Amazon will just drop at door.

I can guarantee you that Amazon in particular won't leave an item, nor pass it to a neighbour, if there's an age restricted item on the app. Such as a child's plastic kitchen set with plastic fucking cutlery in it! That happened to me - it ended up being my third attempt and final drop.

Me and the mother both wondered, so she opened it on the doorstep. I was halfway livid, halfway gobsmacked!

They only ever ask me for my DOB though. Never for physical ID

BumBumCream · 27/05/2024 21:40

I do find this bizarre. Tesco wouldn’t leave my delivery with DD (nothing age restricted in there) so she got a neighbour who is 20 to come round with his ID. That was fine. She could have walked into Tesco & bought everything in my order.

Differentstarts · 27/05/2024 21:50

Are you sure you didn't have age restricted products. Some things people don't think about are age restricted like paracetamol, party poppers, cutlery even if it's plastic, certain birthday candles, energy drink, even non alcoholic drink pings up.

Wouldn't of been razors

Instinct1 · 27/05/2024 22:03

Struggling for money so you have to make a weekly shop last a fortnight but you've had a takeaway tonight (despite being terribly rural and remote) and left your bag in your car yesterday as you were holding a KFC? Could you not have bought the Tesco shop on the way home instead of KFC? 🤷‍♀️

Bjorkdidit · 27/05/2024 22:06

Why do people need to be over 18 to have food that's been paid for with no age restricted products delivered? That's ridiculous. What about people who become parents or who just live independently before that age? Are they not allowed to have their shopping delivered?

I would be complaining to Tesco. Their driver must have very poor eyesight or judgement to not be able to work out that a 31 YO is over 18, whatever weird facial treatments they've had.

Even if they did have age restricted products then surely those could have been removed and the OP allowed to have the rest of their shopping? A teenager could go into any supermarket and buy whatever they wanted apart from age restricted products but if the shop is bringing it to your door, you're not allowed to have that same teenager receive it, eg if their parents are out? Why?

Honestly, it appears that no-one has any common sense or wants to provide even a basic level of customer service any more.

Honestly there are some proper jobsworths when it comes to asking for ID. Some people just use common sense and some people... Don't.

I have a very clear memory of almost breaking down in tears in Tesco at 6am on my way home from a 16 hour night shift at the age of 31, and being ID'd for an energy drink. For which you need to be 16. I couldn't decide whether to cry or crack the energy drink and pour it over the stupid woman's head.

We’re not struggling. Weekly shop has increased roughly 25% in the past year. I have just become engaged and hope to have kids once we are married. A move to a bigger home is also on the table. Fiancé and I are just keeping an eye on the pennies by having more larder meals like chickpea curries/jacket potatoes etc.

I have also said we are not terribly remote. Can be in a large commuter town within 15 mins.

Bought a kfc to soak up the booze after a bank holiday bbq. And since I do not currently own a crystal ball how could I have predicted there was going to be an issue with Tesco and that I should stock up on groceries instead of buying a bucket of chicken?

Jeez why am I getting attacked over really innocuous things?

DH got IDed buying Calpol on his way home from a night shift. As a doctor.

It's not that simple. It's nothing to do with common sense its how businesses run. I'm sure in your job theirs procedures you have to follow that make life difficult its just the way it is when your an employee. That's like walking into a pharmacy and saying can't you just grab it of the shelf for me, it just doesn't work like that and I'm sure you don't go around saying the pharmacist has no common sense so why would you say that about a retail worker

Citrusandginger · 27/05/2024 22:28

Annoying, but I'm slightly relieved to hear this, I have a feeling that more women in their 20s are ID'd than men. (Not so much teens where it seems more equal). I can't help wondering how many 31 year old blokes get ID'd for a Tesco delivery.

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 27/05/2024 22:30

If the delivery driver ever IDs me for my non age restricted products I shall firstly hug him for thinking i might be less than 25.
Then I'll have to get 19 year old DS as he's the only person with photo ID.

Cloudylilac · 27/05/2024 22:33

I’m late 30s and was ID’d a couple of times by sainsburys and Tesco for home deliveries in the past few years! Same as you - had no booze or cigarettes etc in my delivery but it’s just their policy apparently. I used to get ID’d a lot in my early 30s when i did in-person shopping but that was when I was picking up things like scissors or knife or any other age restricted products.

Even Amazon? The drivers are at risk of falling foul of "mystery shoppers," who Amazon bribe with vouchers to wheedle their delivery out of drivers. I went to more than one house, with a couple of cars on the drive, where neither adult could produce a driving licence.

i always left, as there were drivers who gave in, got reported and were sacked.
