Tesco not delivering because I had no id!!

Just learnt that apparently you now have to have id to accept home deliveries.

Annoyingly DP was out with my car (his is at the garage) which had my license in.

Im 31 ffs and no booze or matches etc were in the shop this time.

The teenager delivery boy said he could not deliver! He asked if I had id or if my parents were home. Now I have no wrinkles on account of using retinol in addition to having gained 3 stone since Covid due to depression. My face has very much started to sag (looking to get threads and lose weight sooner rather than later). No way you need to “think 25” with me.

What is the point?? Was this a power trip??

Now have to fork out on a takeaway for my dinner

Crumblecunt Farm is the past watershed version of Emmerdale.

None of those count as ID except the drivers license.

Depends on the context, surely. But I'll take your word for it as I've never been IDed for age.

Two questions:

Why not the birth certificate??
What about people who don't drive?

Then a passport. But a birth certificate could be anyones.

It's not got a photo on!

Because a birth certificate could belong anyone - you need photographic evidence.

You can still apply for a provisional license as a non-driver, or use a passport or government ID.

Why on earth would you need challenge 25 to buy bread and milk?

Yeah, but if it's got the same name as some utilities bill with your name and the address of the delivery on, I'd expect a Tesco delivery driver to be happy enough!

But it could belong to anyone in the house Confused

Of course they need photo ID, not a random piece of paper.

Credit card is not ID

It's not but to be fair some places that say you need ID do accept bank cards
(Not if you're actually buying alcohol but for more minor things)

TiredArse · 27/05/2024 20:32

Actually, Tesco website doesn’t say you need Id for delivery unless age restricted items purchased.

All goods must be signed for on delivery by an adult aged 18 years or over.
Tesco follows a "Think 25" policy when delivering age-restricted items, so if the person receiving the goods looks under 25, proof of age will be requested. If proof is not available and there is no-one of that age at the address when delivery is being made, the goods will be retained by the driver. If we attempt to deliver your order to the delivery address as arranged with you but there is nobody at the delivery address to accept your order, the driver will leave notification of attempted delivery and you will need to contact our Customer Service Centre to re-arrange delivery (see below for contact details).

You don't - it's because you need to be 18 to accept the delivery, so drivers should be asking for ID if they're unsure about your age.

Citrusandginger · 27/05/2024 20:33

Its absolutely worth calling customer service. It may well be in the term's & conditions that they can ask you for ID if you happen to look under 25, but it is not a legal requirement.

The law is to not sell age restricted products to under 18/16/12 year olds.

The driver might benefit from further training and clarification that he understands the both the law and Tesco policy and they will want to know.

And yes, I have worked in both retail and customer service.

It's the same thing though - if the driver doesn't believe you're 18 they're not going to deliver without ID.

DownNative · 27/05/2024 19:26

For the simple fact it's NOT a new policy and new drivers are trained in this too just like everyone else.

It's been policy all over the UK & Republic of Ireland for YEARS now. Not the case its only been introduced to your area well after everywhere else.

I would just stop digging. It's weird.

It's clearly one that isn't implemented then.
Do YOU ask for ID every time
Because I have never been asked

Switch to Ocado. I checked their policy when I needed a delivery to be accepted by my (then 17 year old) DS. They confirmed that as long as no restricted items they would deliver to to whoever opened my front door! At that time the other delivering supermarkets all stated that they would only deliver to over 18s (regardless of products ordered).
After similar posts to this on here and Facebook it does appear that Ocado are still the only ones that behave sensibly.

As if any 31 year old looks under 18 . They might look 25, but they’re not passing for 16 or 17.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2024 20:40

My 19yo ds gets our Asda delivery in and unpacked every week as he works from home some days.

I don't order she restricted items but even so he's never been asked for ID.

And he certainly doesn't look anywhere near 25!

Thegreatergoodgerald · 27/05/2024 20:41

That was bad luck, I have never been ask for id for a delivery even with booze! Just DOB…

K0OLA1D · 27/05/2024 20:41

My 10yo often answer the door to the delivery guy for me. By the time I get there most of the bags are in the hall!

Mostly ask for birth year these days, and that's it.

I guess I look (much) more than 18 though. I have been asked for Id sometimes which I take as a compliment"

I mean, I don't disagree with you, but Tesco are clear on their policies.

I've ordered from Tesco for years and randomly got ID'd a few months ago - I'm 35 and like you say, clearly not a teenager, lol.

countdown64 · 27/05/2024 21:00

Balloonhearts · 27/05/2024 18:49

Firstly he isn't a teenager. You have to hold a clean licence for 3 years before you can have a job as a delivery driver, which makes him at least 20.

Secondly, it's his job. He didn't waste his own time and effort for shits and giggles. I doubt he cba to take it all back to be disposed of or whatever they do with it. It would be much easier for him just to say don't worry about it but he's risking his job if he does.

I doubt he personally cares if you're 25. I know I couldn't give a fuck if someone is 21 but if the policy is needing ID then that's what I have to ask for.

Does it not say on the confirmation email that you need to have it to take delivery? If it doesn't, I'd ring them up and complain but I'd not blame the delivery bloke for doing what he's told.

My ds is a teenager and working as a supermarket delivery driver. Not Tesco's, but he also has mates the same age delivering for other supermarkets, so several of them do have teenage drivers

PopcornPop · 27/05/2024 21:03

I've never been asked for ID not even when I buy alcohol for a home delivery

SpringBunnies · 27/05/2024 21:06

This has been policy for a while. We have deliveries with Ocado. Once I was out to take DC2 to club. DC1 was at home and I told her to receive our grocery delivery. She had to ring me to say the driver won’t hand her the groceries because she has no ID (and she’s not 16 or 18 whichever is the age allowed). Luckily I was far from home and the driver kindly waited for me to get home). I never expected this. Most delivery like Royal Mail, Hermes or Amazon will just drop at door.

Yet you can afford tesco delivery? I suggest finding an aldi or a lidl or something

Er, Aldi and Lidl are pretty much the same price as Tesco!
