Tesco not delivering because I had no id!!

Vius · 27/05/2024 18:41

Just learnt that apparently you now have to have id to accept home deliveries.

Annoyingly DP was out with my car (his is at the garage) which had my license in.

Im 31 ffs and no booze or matches etc were in the shop this time.

The teenager delivery boy said he could not deliver! He asked if I had id or if my parents were home. Now I have no wrinkles on account of using retinol in addition to having gained 3 stone since Covid due to depression. My face has very much started to sag (looking to get threads and lose weight sooner rather than later). No way you need to “think 25” with me.

What is the point?? Was this a power trip??

Now have to fork out on a takeaway for my dinner

Stupid kid was on a power trip. Never been asked for my ID for food deliveries!

Not so. Even if an order has no age restricted items, the driver has to ask for valid ID if the customer or person at door looks under 25.

No ID to hand?

Driver is well within their rights to return your order to store as per Tesco policy.

OP should check the Terms And Conditions.

Well thanks for that kick in teeth 🤣

Yours,

Nearly 50!!!!!

Im okay though, it's fine..

Honestly.

What power has he gained from this?

Vius · 27/05/2024 19:11

I very much look 31. VERY occasionally get asked for my id at pubs and bars but it is very much the norm to not get asked these days. Have had a Nuface for my marionette lines and hooded eyes for at least 5 years!

The driver also specifically said it was a new policy! Cause I initially said “oh just take out the age restricted stuff”.

And when you called customer services and asked why he refused it, what did they say?

He would have had to report to a supervisor / manager the reasons why he didn't compete the delivery, so his side of it is on record.

Oh I assumed there was no customer service due to bank holiday.

Very much doubt he told you it's a new policy as its been around for years. I know as I am one. 🧐

Read your T&Cs.

Oh, and feel flattered he thought you looked under 25! 🤷‍♂️

There wouldn't have been much point calling. If you had no ID and he'd asked you for it then they would have sided with his decision and said there was nothing they could do regardless of how batshit it was that he felt you needed to be ID at 31.

He very much DID say “we now have to ask for ids”. Why would I lie? I honestly was expecting posters on here to have experienced same annoyance with “policy change”.

I don’t care about being flattered. I care about the Greek roast chicken I was planning on having for dinner with the bread I made!

Drivers working bank holiday.
Supervisors would be.
Managers would be.

I would imagine the call centre would be also.

The person that picked it and packed it.
The person that checked it and loaded it.
The person sorting the vans out.
The driver.
The person who will unpack it.
The person who will restock it all.
The person adding it all back to the stores inventory.
The supervisor finding out why the driver didn't deliver it.

They'll all be busy...
If this is some power trip from some kid that's never met you, he's going to be making a lot of work for people you've never met and explaining himself to someone you've never met.

It's unlikely.

It's more likely imo, he was doing his job as best he can.
He might have had a chat recently because he dropped off an order with paracetamol in it and didn't check age.

WalkingonWheels · 27/05/2024 19:24

I'd have been cross too.

My 16 year old always accepts my Tesco deliveries at the door and has done since he was about 10. He looks really young and has never been asked to show ID.

For the simple fact it's NOT a new policy and new drivers are trained in this too just like everyone else.

It's been policy all over the UK & Republic of Ireland for YEARS now. Not the case its only been introduced to your area well after everywhere else.

I would just stop digging. It's weird.

purpleme12 · 27/05/2024 19:28

That's so weird.
I bet delivery from another supermarket. Never been asked for ID but one delivery person came, hesitated at the door, then asked if my and my child were the only ones in! When I asked why he mumbled something we couldn't hear.
He let us have the shopping but I did wonder if he thought I was a child or something 🤣

TuesdayWhistler · 27/05/2024 19:30

I would wonder if another driver has messed up somewhere recently and all the drivers have had a chat and been told to be more strict about it.

Or he's a new driver and didn't realise it's a policy that's been a thing for ages.

I'd think more along those lines than assuming the driver in front of me with my stuff just CBA to put the crate down and would rather go back and face the music for failing delivery...

Please then explain to me why my delivery, which contained no age restricted items, could not be delivered? And why I have never once been asked for ID before?

You have no clue what I was told.

MrsLeonFarrell · 27/05/2024 19:37

I've had tesco deliveries for years, this week I was out and my, fortunately adult, offspring was asked for ID for the first time ever. According to the driver Head Office are having a crackdown on the need to check ID. Which I suppose makes sense but is awkward if you don't have any to hand. Something to be aware of though.

Balloonhearts · 27/05/2024 19:41

Vius · 27/05/2024 18:53

Well he looked VERY young.

No mention of policy change on website or email.

The older you get, the younger they look.

TeenLifeMum · 27/05/2024 19:44

My 16yo has taken deliveries before when I’m held up. Bonkers rule imo.

You have no clue what I was told.

T&Cs make it crystal clear customers or person at door must be aged 18+ in order for drivers to deliver. If a person looks under 25, Think 25 must be followed.

That applies whether or not age restricted items is in an order.

You've obviously not read your T&Cs.

Like I said, stop digging. It's weird.

Rosebel · 27/05/2024 19:50

It's not his fault you didn't have ID and he won't know if there are age restricted products on your shop.
It's been policy for at least 5 years to ask for ID and you were just lucky not have been asked before.
He isn't going to risk his job. You had no idea how old he was (because he wasn't a teenager), he had no idea how old you were.
See? It's not easy to guess ages.

Greycheck · 27/05/2024 19:51

How annoying. I've definitely never been asked for ID - I don't have any so would have remembered if I had been asked. I am now 40 but have been getting deliveries for well over 10 years. Maybe I just look rough AF all the time!

wizarddry · 27/05/2024 19:53

Vius · 27/05/2024 18:56

Extremely annoying! We have been stretching out our big shop - gone from weekly to fortnightly due to COL. Have been having very random meals for last few days. Was looking forward to a proper meal.

Yet you can afford tesco delivery? I suggest finding an aldi or a lidl or something

CleftChin · 27/05/2024 19:55

I've never been asked. Even if something is a policy/on the T&Cs, if it's never been enforced, then surely it's fine to complain a bit.

I'd have tried some other ID - home bills, or credit card or whatever I did have because really no-one wants the order returned.

K0OLA1D · 27/05/2024 19:56

wizarddry · 27/05/2024 19:53

Aldi and Lidl don't do deliveries.

Some people NEED deliveries. Consider yourself fortunate you don't

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/05/2024 19:59

What an idiotic policy. Surely Tesco could just put a big warning on the delivery instructions for deliveries with age-restricted items? Why should it be relevant how old the customer is if the delivery is just bread, tins, loo rolls etc?
