VOTE Labour and

AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

Dear God where to begin.

Your username belies anything you post on here. All of it utter drivel.
Have you been asleep for the past 14 years?
You should be embarrassed at your ineptitude at commenting on anything political.

To those who say they won't vote/will spoil their ballot. I'd ask them if they are ok with literal shit in our rivers and seas? How about a NHS where people are too scared to go to A&E, but cannot get a GP appointment? How about schools and hospitals falling down? Energy companies doing nothing different but, because of Russia's aggression now are making massive profits?

This is, in my view, the legacy of Thatcher, but made worse by successive Tory governments.

I always have in my mind the maxim that you should never let "better" and "perfect" be enemies.

Voting is supposed to be based on sole interest.

most people who claim moral high ground and that they are voting due to helping others are basically just voting with helping people that align also with helping themselves, but cognitive dissonance allows them to believe otherwise.

you’re supposed to vote in your own interest and there’s nothing wrong with that. No matter what MN says.

Well said.

MrsMurphyIWish · 22/05/2024 19:16

Reasons I’ll be voting Labour:

Selfishly: been teaching since 2000. Under a Conservative government I have seen my pay eroded, working conditions worsen and my pension changed.

My family: My children have never known a Labour government. It took 3 years for my son to get an autism diagnosis and his EHCP only covers his school paying for his TA mornings only (the afternoon comes out their already decimated budget).

On behalf of all the children I teach: they are the children of the Gove curriculum changes. They are miserable. Class sizes are huge. We are all fucking miserable.

I don’t expect Labour to wave a magic want but I want hope - I am fed up of seeing misery daily.

Ilovemycar77 · 22/05/2024 19:16

Labour loves its benefit Britain voters!!
for this, I will never, ever vote Labour.
Our Tory party has also shafted this country and I don’t give 2 figs about Lib Dem’s.

I shall not be voting. Instead be getting out of this hell
hole of a country and working remotely elsewhere in the world where my Husband & I are welcomed with open arms due to our commitment in high earning and looking after our own without reliance.

I am sick to death of this Benefit scrounging high tax paying country for zero benefits back,
I trust nobody to do right for the honest, hard working British citizen.

Yeah, my parents or aunts and uncles or in laws don’t care about any of this.

What utter nonsense. You don’t get to tell me how to vote or that I should vote for the party that makes me richer. I don’t want to live in a country that is torn apart by inequality. If you do then that’s your prerogative but for all our sakes I hope you’re in a small minority on the 4th July.

Edited

I actually suspect that labour will scrape in with a minority and be able to action very little, because as ever many people will vote Tory and just won’t admit it because of people like you who act like voting Tory is akin to being Jack the Ripper.

I’ll vote in my best interests, as I think is correct. And the interests of my children, naturally. We pay a shitload of tax and do a lot for charity - I don’t feel like I need to do more than I do, and that’s my prerogative, particularly given the gleeful “fuck the rich, fuck private school children” attitude shown on most of these threads.

its not my fault the govt are fucking up what they do with money and trying to keep afloat an NHS that needs drastic overhaul. Labour won’t be any better or different. No one has the balls to actually do anything, and hopefully labour doesn’t have the seats to do much either (although unclear what actual plans they have).

What ridiculous hyperbole. Yes we pay shitloads of tax too - have a fucking Blue Peter badge 🙄. If people are ashamed to admit that they vote Tory maybe they should have a think about that - blaming Labour voters for Tory embarrassment is fucking ludicrous.

Your are fully entitled to vote on whatever basis you wish, but it’s nonsense to say that voting is supposed to be based solely on your own interest.

People can cast their vote as they wish on whatever basis they wish, and values are the most important factor to many people.

People aren’t ashamed they just don’t want a bunch of vitriol directed at them for their valid political choices.

which is entirely reasonable.

Billyandharry · 22/05/2024 19:21

My Tory voting boomer relatives all worked hard - my labour voting mates and social work clients also work hard - the difference is my relatives all bought their houses for about 20p in 1970 and don't see that this was lucky for them. And meant they didn't both have to work/struggle/stress just to live and bring up kids.
Thick as mince.

LieutOliviaBenson · 22/05/2024 19:22

Labour brought in the minimum wage! Before that, I was earning £40 per week working 45 hours per week. This was in 1996, not 1976!

They put through the Good Friday Agreement.

Brought in 1 year of maternity leave.

Tax credits, child trust fund etc.

Not being rich I think I'll take my chances voting Labour, thanks.

Ok - I take on board your first paragraph and I agree “supposed to” is incorrect.

I do think a number of people do vote in their own interests and when those interests do happen to align with what they deign to be morally superior they pretend otherwise (either consciously or subconscious).

eg if you claim any sort of help/benefit/child credit or whatever and you say you’re voting labour to help the masses, sure you’re aware you’re also voting to help yourself. It’s disingenuous.

Will never vote either.

So what's your solution? We have to have a government. If you don't vote you get no input at all into who runs the country. If you don't feel you can pick out the best person to vote for, look for the least worst.

I agree with a PP who said when in doubt just look at your local MP and think about who is best for the constituency- it’s better than abstaining

And why the "never lived in social housing" comment @DistinguishedSocialCommentator ?

Because every tory I've known has been a massive snob, often openly.
