AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

I think it’s hard to fathom a worse government than the ones we’ve had for the last 14 years.

They’ve made the country and its populace so much poorer and it will likely never fully recover.

The economic incompetence we’ve seen from the Tories make these (extremely hyperbolic) warning about Labour ring entirely hollow.

”Things can only get better” is extremely apt.

Thank goodness we only have another few weeks of Tory ineptitude, but the damage they’ve inflicted will be felt for generations.

Thousands up and down the country work incredibly hard OP and yet still struggle and can barely make ends meet let alone start worrying about their “one or two properties” or private school taxation. Many of the hardest, most gruelling jobs are the lowest paid and you’d probably do well to educate yourself about this before waxing lyrical about how amazingly self sufficient you are with no thought for how others circumstances might act as a barrier for them.

Can always tell a lot about a person when they vote solely based on self interest.

That is the point of us voting. We vote for ourselves not others…

I remember 1997 - 2010. Things were incredibly better. Anyone denying that was not paying attention.

Are we going to get miracles? Nope, the pile of shit that needs fixing is too big for that. But we'll get a government that actively wants to turn things around and will do their best to manage it. They'll be boring, steady, capable and they won't make good satire.

I'm here for it.

OP is a wealthy buy to let landlord - of course they're going to vote Tory. I have two disabled young adult children (who both work). I feel differently.

Yes it was a great time. I started teaching then and it felt like a time full of optimism. Things are so very different now though.

Hi Rishi!

bye Rishi!

As a disabled person, working ft, with 2 dc at state schools, my heart bleeds some people might no longer be able to afford private school.....

Voting is supposed to be based on sole interest.

most people who claim moral high ground and that they are voting due to helping others are basically just voting with helping people that align also with helping themselves, but cognitive dissonance allows them to believe otherwise.

you’re supposed to vote in your own interest and there’s nothing wrong with that. No matter what MN says.

I will also vote tory

And me but I’m resigned to a Labour government and things getting much, much worse. Starmer and co will win as the default alternative not because of their skill and polices, you wouldn’t trust them to run a village shop.

icelolly12 · 22/05/2024 18:53

I'll vote Labour because I have better faith than I do in the Tories that taxes will be reinvested into the public sector rather than to line one's own golden pockets.

Will things be hunky dory or will we see many if any improvements? No. The damage done has been too great, but if the Tories get in again, they will feel invincible and that could lead to some truly scary policies- decimating the environment and labour rights are two issues I'm most concerned about.

I vote for others because I’m not as worried about myself.

I vote for my children. And I vote for the kids who are growing up in poor circumstances like I did (in foster care after my mum became an alcoholic and got hardly any help under the Thatcher government) because I’m not a selfish twat.

Speak for yourself! Not all of us vote entirely in self interest. We vote Labour because they are more likely to support vulnerable people as they did in the 97 government, rather than destroy them as the Tories have been doing since 2010 🙄

@Shade17 yet the Tories have been making such a brilliant job of government for 14 years 🙄. Dear fucking god.

They can't get much worse can they. Jesus. How can anyone still think that the shitshow we've had for the last 14 years deserve any more chances!?

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 22/05/2024 18:56

I grew up under a labour government and it was so so .uch better. Seriously you are in some sort of weird alternate universe. I cannot think of one single thing apart from gay marriage that the Tories have done in 14 years that have got better.
Everyone I know is much much worse off. Not a little bit but hugely.
We had our last baby in 2010, we were doing ok. On a very average income I went part time for 7 years and back to uni when the kids were little with no family childcare help and we managed to go on holidays abroad, buy a 3 bed semi in an average area, and save a little each month. Now in exactly the same house without a bigger mortgage we both work full-time in much better jobs than then and we never have any money left over at the end of the month. So we've pretty much doubled our income and got the same if not worse lifestyle.
Plus everything else is worse the NHS waiting lists, the trains, shit in the seas and rivers, pot holes, number of children living in poverty, number of homeless families, number of years to wait for social housing, I could go on and on and on.

What on earth was worse under labour other than their terrible decision to go to war and some of the PFI bollocks.

Whatafustercluck · 22/05/2024 18:28

Rishi, I thought you'd be drying your rain-soaked smalls by the No.10 hearth by now.

Those Torties sure are naughty. I had one once, called Daisy.

I had a tortie too, she was called Ella and she was one 'ell of a cat. Tiny, but the best hunter of all the cats I've had.

Gladtobeout · 22/05/2024 18:57

Vote labour and... thrive?
Vote labour and... try to restore some national services?
Vote labour and... things will only get better.
Vote labour and... come up with a new theme song?

This must be a round on Mock the Week.

Wewelcomeyourfeedback · 22/05/2024 18:57

Palmtreesandteas · 22/05/2024 18:31

I don't think you can convince people suffering from austerity, cuts to public services and lies and general incompetence for so long to not vote Labour op...especially for the sake of saving private schools tax 🤣

Exactly!

Nothinglefttosaynow · 22/05/2024 18:57

I think sadly there is a huge divide between those who are comfortable and those who are not. I will vote Labour although I don't agree with all of their policies I do believe they have to be better than this lot. The PPE scandal, Downing St parties etc makes me not trust anyone in power, but if Labour can turn things around for working class people that benefits me. I will never be able to send my children to private school, and at this rate can't afford to buy a single property let alone multiple. I am not a social housing tenant though OP don't worry, I'm one of the mugs paying someone else's mortgage in a private let because there is no social housing available near me!

HormonalHairyPoppins · 22/05/2024 18:57

EffortlesslyInelegant · 22/05/2024 18:30

I'm not entirely convinced that intelligence and grip-on-reality wise that you, OP, are best placed to offer analysis on my bumfluff never mind the important issue of who should run the country.

This.

Cornettoninja · 22/05/2024 18:58

weird, that’s exactly what I’ve seen from the current government for the last fourteen years.

Maybe you but not everyone, some people think about the wider picture and the impact on people in different positions to themselves. I don’t need an already comfortable life to become even more comfortable at the expense of kicking those who are struggling even harder.

Seaitoverthere · 22/05/2024 19:00

It is weird reading some people worrying about things getting worse after what we have seen from the current government . I’ve never seen the majority of the country as pissed off with it all as they are now and pretty much everyone I know, whatever their political view are pretty united in condemning the current government.
