Of course, everyone has to do something, so this is light-hearted.

But which jobs would be red flags for you and you can't imagine going out with someone who does this?

Mine would be-

Tory MP/aide/minister- or anything to do with the Tory party
Scaffolder
Stripper
Porn star
PT/fitness instructor/gym owner
Nightclub owner/ manager

Interesting to hear yours!

A teacher

SusannahSW2 · 25/05/2024 14:14

Pest control; mortician.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/05/2024 02:32

@Efrogwraig I suppose you could say I don't feel like I trust them. We wouldn't have much in common. Nothing 'wrong' though, just not for me.

To the posters who say that it is the person who matters, not their job: often the job reflects the person which is why one of the first questions we ask someone is ‘What do you do for a living?’ The job says a lot about the person. Not always, but most times.

Scaffolder seems so random haha

I think the one job I couldn't deal with would be influencer or youtuber or twitch streamer, this kind of stuff.

Same here. I was going to say it's unlikely that a man my age would be an 'influencer', then remembered all the insufferable old guys I've seen showing off to the camera about how fit they are!

I don't think I could be serious about a politician or trade unionist. If we're only talking dates, I would because the conversation might be lively.

I think bailiffs are the ultimate class traitors. Nothing more than thugs doing the dirty work of the rich and powerful. Yes there will be the odd case whereby someone deserves them...but it's hardly some sort of altruistic career.

I've met some lovely bailiffs! I've got an excruciating amount of debt and nothing to pay with - the bailiffs who've visited so far have been nothing but professional and understanding. (Touch wood.)

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/05/2024 06:34

Bankers.
That’s about the only job I would avoid as an entire class.

But it’s only a small percentage of people who get to choose what they do for a living!

I agree. Not everyone is in a job they enjoy.

Bailiffs are like vampires - never invite them into your house.

Eeek! Too late 😂

Next time someone comes, I'll rub 'em with garlic.

Refuse collector. I used to know someone who did this job and (maybe it was in my mind) there was always a faint smell of rubbish around him. He asked me out and I just couldn’t bring myself to go on a date with him.

other than that - Tory or Refom UK party anything. Hunt master. Long haul pilot.

Sad to see so many people say Police. My DH is a Police Officer, and he's the salt of the earth. He works his arse off, doing very long hours. He's seen things that no one should ever have to see, and that would traumatise most people, and yet he still soldiers on. I could list those things here, but quite honestly, they are so traumatic, that I think MN would have to delete my post.

He's been assaulted several times by members of the public. He often goes above and beyond, even when not on duty. He's broken up fights in pubs, and rescued someone who was trying to kill themselves, even though he wasn't on the clock.

He has no fear of walking into situations, that other people would run away from. He's saved many, many lives. We've been together for 16 years, and he's never given me any reason to suspect infidelity : if there's a works night out, he's always home by 9pm, because (in his words) he'd rather be home with me.

My Ex, on the other hand, had a very respectable job, and yet behind closed doors he assaulted me and he also cheated on me for the entirety of our 20 year marriage (not known by me at the time, obvs).

Myself, I was in the Police for about 5 years, and can honestly, hand on heart say, that everyone I met was lovely. And I never witnessed any cheating or misogyny. Not once in 5 years. And I was young, pretty and single back then - did not get chatted up once!!

Anyway, for me :

Binman
Sex worker
Gynaecologist
Undertaker

Exactly, there’s bad and good in any job. You only hear about the bad ones because it makes good news/gossip.
I work for the police in a civilian role and met my DH as an officer. He has his annoying faults like anyone but he’s genuinely got a heart of gold, would help anyone in need, done his fair share of very long shifts with no breaks, seen things that would break some people. He had a breakdown himself due to the pressures of trying to do his best for everyone. If I could choose anyone to to father my children, it would be him every time.

@ObliviousCoalmine

Porn (if they were male, I'd date a woman who did porn)

Why the distinction?

kαλοκαλοκαιρι · 28/05/2024 13:08

police
bailiff
military
politician
anyone who makes being a landlord a full time job

BobbyBiscuits · 31/05/2024 17:32

@Getonwitit sorry I'm late, just saw your reply.
Your DH sounds absolutely lovely. Of course I don't think everyone of any one profession is the same.
My dad was a scaffolder in his younger years and sounds a lot like your DH. 😄
