Which jobs would put you off dating someone?

Of course, everyone has to do something, so this is light-hearted.

But which jobs would be red flags for you and you can't imagine going out with someone who does this?

Mine would be-

Tory MP/aide/minister- or anything to do with the Tory party
Scaffolder
Stripper
Porn star
PT/fitness instructor/gym owner
Nightclub owner/ manager

Interesting to hear yours!

Solicitor in a big/american law firm. Bloody awful hours.

Working for a private equity house. Full of hyper competitive people determined to scrounge out every pound.

Anyone who works away for long periods (forces, oil rigs etc).

Anyone trying to market things to children - especially the sorts of people making very addictive computer games or screen content.

What's wrong with police?!

AlanBrendaCelia · 21/05/2024 20:55

@SeriaMau what's wrong with ice cream men? Actually, you’ve got a point - I’d be worried I’d eat all his profits!

HAF1119 · 21/05/2024 20:55

Anything smelly! Most other things I could deal with but something very smelly not so much!

I don't know if you personally eat meat, but if you do you're contributing to slaughterhouse workers' wages. They're doing a job most of us benefit from and if they didn't then cognitive dissonance would fall and we'd have to either be vegetarian or vegan or kill our own animals for food.

I don’t eat meat. And if I were a lamb I think I’d rather not be born than slaughtered at 6 months (I’m not sure how many months but a lamb is a baby by definition)

ChilliPB · 21/05/2024 21:09

Anyone working in animal farming/abattoir/butcher etc (I’m vegan).

Police.

Military.

Generally jobs that I couldn’t be on board with ethically - PPs have mentioned arms dealers but also stuff like working for a big oil&gas company.

I’d also have to think about someone doing a job that was super demanding/meant they were away a lot etc just as that impacts your life together. DH works shifts but only a couple of days a week so it’s fine. But can have a big impact on life for both of you and especially if you have kids. Same with someone that had an office job but was expected to work v long days.

LakeTiticaca · 21/05/2024 21:36

Many of these jobs are pretty vital ones. We need people to do these jobs, they are not for everyone but thank god there are people who will. It doesn't make them a horrible person.
My close relative works in the sewage industry and he doesn't stink. Another is a police officer who deals with horrible incidents/people every day.
It's quite an unpleasant post imho and I hope none of those in the professions mentioned ever have the misfortune of dating any of you lot!!

Why is in unpleasant? People can choose not to date someone for any reason they want.

I'm fat, many blokes wouldn't date a fat woman, I don't get offended by it, personal preference is just that.

Honestmary · 21/05/2024 21:53

Well there are too many to tag but what’s wrong with Funeral Directors? Now I may also be biased but I’m a lovely normal person, good fun and not at all creepy, oh and I don’t have ghosts following me 😂

colourfulchinadolls · 21/05/2024 21:55

Hotel staff, just because of how stupid the hours are and how an 8 hour shift easily becomes all night. Also massive smoking and coke culture in hotels (I speak from experience)!

Cosmetic/plastic surgeon and anyone who does lip filler/bum filler and the like.

BlackForestCake · 21/05/2024 22:02

What's wrong with bramble pickers??

I'd love to date a fishmonger, think of the cheap lobster, salmon, oysters...

LakeTiticaca · 21/05/2024 22:12

@Beezknees it's mainly the sneery way many of the posts come across

NameNew · 21/05/2024 22:15

Someone unemployed - I absolutely would not date them. Likewise, someone in a 'not proper' job; YouTuber/influencer and the like.

I couldn't date a butcher or similar, I rarely eat meat and I can't stand the smell of it. A family member used to work in a butcher's and they would come home stinking of raw meat.

I wouldn't date anyone who earned significantly less than me as I want to start a family and he would need to earn enough to support us through maternity leave.

I would prefer to avoid someone who worked shifts regularly, I've worked shifts and planning your life is a nightmare. The guy I'm dating currently does on-calls and occasional non 9-5 hours at times and that can be bad enough.

feelingalittlehorse · 21/05/2024 22:21

No job would put me off more than any of the above.

Netcam · 21/05/2024 22:22

I'm with you, I've always had a policy of never sleeping with a Tory, even a Tory voter.

Anyone who regularly goes on business trips.

I’m a 30 yo management consultant at a big 4 firm. It has SHOCKED me how prevalent cheating is on work trips. The number of sad men (clients and consultants) who just want to get trashed on these all expense paid dinners and then go have sex with any willing participant….

Even the boring, overweight middle aged guys.

Sometimes I feel like a Geisha on work trips.

Why are you shagging them?

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 21/05/2024 22:45
