Which jobs would put you off dating someone?

Of course, everyone has to do something, so this is light-hearted.

But which jobs would be red flags for you and you can't imagine going out with someone who does this?

Mine would be-

Tory MP/aide/minister- or anything to do with the Tory party
Scaffolder
Stripper
Porn star
PT/fitness instructor/gym owner
Nightclub owner/ manager

Interesting to hear yours!

Not too fussed about what job, if they have a job then that's good. I guess I know too many slimy sales reps though. Sex work absolutely wouldn't bother me as I have lots of friends who do that. Vape seller is probably the only other thing that I might say no to. I'm more interested in what they do in their spare time, and whether they'll be interesting

Lonejohny · 23/05/2024 12:22

What's wrong with the police?

Nipsmum · 23/05/2024 12:36

I can't say there has ever been anyone I would not date because of their work.
Maybe I am just old fashioned enough not to care about that type of nonsense.

Lyraloo · 23/05/2024 12:52

Anyone from the Labour Party!

When a guy told me he was a bailiff, I knew I couldn’t go out with him. Just killed the romance dead.
He told me cheerfully with enthusiasm that the contents of most people’s house was worth far less than they thought. He really enjoyed his job.

Would you never use a bailiff? What if a company had taken your money and not done the work for example, wouldn't you want to have a means of getting it back? What if it was someone self employed? Or some sort of scam artist? Would you really just think, oh well I'll just right off that ten grand as bailiffs are immoral?

They are generally the kindest and funniest people to be around. Wouldn't put me off at all.

Agree with this. Usually very cheerful people! My cousin is an undertaker and he’s absolutely lovely. He’s never short of interest from women!

What's wrong with the police?

I think there are probably a wide range of reasons- you won’t get the same answer from every woman. One reason might be shift work/antisocial hours. Another might be that some statistics suggest that police officers have quite high rates of domestic abuse against their partners (magnified by the difficulty such a victim might have in reporting those crimes).

In recent years you might have noticed an alarming number of cases of police officers committing violent and sexual offences against women (including rape and murder), as well as stories of misogynistic behaviour in several forces (sharing of inappropriate messages and photos relating to victims for example). Some women feel that some forces are institutionally misogynistic.

Most of the ones I know personally are keen on binge drinking in a fairly dysfunctional way. (I think heavy drinking is also a feature in some other professions- my nurse friend says Drs can be terrible for boozing).

I probably wouldn’t go out with a police officer for all of these reasons.

tommyhoundmum · 23/05/2024 14:36

The sort of person who was influenced by a person's job rather than their character.

They're police?

Annierob · 23/05/2024 17:14

I can understand why people use bailiffs; just doesn’t go with romance 😊

AdoraBell · 23/05/2024 17:18

I think only porn “actor” or male stripper. I’m more interested in the person rather than the job. Having said that, I’m married and not looking for anyone to date.

Welcometomycircus · 23/05/2024 18:42

Police officer
Because studies have shown as much as 40% of the partners of police officers have been victim of domestic violence.
That's a good enough reason for me!

Evaka · 23/05/2024 18:46

Anyone in a high earning but insane hours role. My brother is a corporate lawyer in the US and worked 100 hour weeks. Took work calls at our dad's funeral, routinely on Xmas day etc. I don't know how his wife deals.

I think bailiffs are the ultimate class traitors. Nothing more than thugs doing the dirty work of the rich and powerful. Yes there will be the odd case whereby someone deserves them...but it's hardly some sort of altruistic career.

Whatineed · 23/05/2024 19:10

I'd dare a butcher in a snap.

I love a bbq, and toad in the hole. 😂

Same. I'd date a butcher. Love meat and it's so bloody expensive 😂

Also as previously mentioned I'd date a funeral director or undertaker. I usually imagine them to be quite empathetic and emotionally intelligent.

mactire · 23/05/2024 19:15

Chefs, anyone involved in gambling, long haul truckers, politicians, influencers, musicians, DJs, pastors, military, sex workers.

Police, Army, Fire Service
I don't have anything against them per se - I dated quite a few Service people when I was younger but I always knew that it would nver be a long term thing. They belong to the job before you

Not true.

Kjpt140v · 24/05/2024 07:45

And women don't do similar?
