Cleaner is here right now, is he taking the piss?

It’s a lovely sunny, and my day plans have been cancelled because I’m waiting around on a cleaner doing my end of tenancy clean.

Today is my final day of tenancy. I currently live alone in an apartment. I use to have an flatmate but she moved out in December. Only a small 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom (one of them a tiny en-suite) and an open pan kitchen/small living room.

I booked the end of tenancy clean at 9am, this is the earliest appointment I could get. I wanted a first thing appointment so I could be out asap, I work Mon-Fri so it’s my day off, and none of my things are here.

i have paid a 50% deposit upfront, then will pay the remaining 50% to the company upon completion of works. Afterwards I then have to hand the keys back to my landlord.

He arrived an hour and 15 minutes late, didn’t get here until 10.15am (no apology or explanation) didn’t start the work until 10:30am because he spent 15 mins talking to himself about what he’s going to start with first, generally dithering about. At one point he actually sat down.

He arrived with very minimum cleaning products I noticed. At one point he said he needed gloves, so he walked back to his car (parked in a car park a 5 minute walk away!)

He came back, and finished one bedroom/bathroom in no time. Then said he was going to go to the shop for drinking water. The shop is on my street corner. He was gone for over half an half!! I called to ask where he was. When he came back he sat at my table and ate sandwiches he’d bought from the shop.

While I was gone I noticed in the bathroom (which was my previous flatmate’s) the tiles had not been cleaned properly (the tiles are textured and have depth in some areas, not sure if I’m explaining that properly) and still had some residue.

While he was having his lunch (after a late start and after only 1 hours work !) I asked him about the tiles, he said that’s a different service and he did not have the products? He had literally lightly cleaned over the surfaces.

I said to him “So what’s the difference between this End Of Tenancy clean, which I’m paying £180 for today, and a generic clean which would usually charge £16 an hour round here?” He could not answer and said he’ll go back to it at the end and “try his best”.

Is now 14:50 and he’s still only half way through the work. He’s done, 1 bathroom, 1 bedroom, and is half way through the kitchen. He still has the rest of the kitchen to complete, then the living room, and the remaining bathroom.

It’s a tiny apartment!

I’m convinced my deposit will be deducted due to it “not cleaned to a professional standard”. Its just doesn’t have that fresh cleaned look? Or even smell any different. I’ve had cleaning ladies before and it’s looks shined and spotless, and smells amazing.

It’s costing me almost £200.

I’ve never seen a tenancy clean that’s actually any good. Once your flat is cleared it’s so easy to do a proper deep clean yet your forced into an expensive professional clean.

Dont get my post wrong. There is a real skill in Cleaning properly, yet lots of companies massively take the piss and so many are linked to the lettings agents

I do agree! I moved into a flat that had white tiles in the kitchen, they had gone yellowish from grease etc but had white arches in the grime: obviously the cleaning company person had just reached over the sink and wiped as far as they could reach easily: it was so blatant! Yet the estate agent said it was clean! The caretaker of the flats told me the cleaning firm manager was related to someone senior in the estate agents.......I took a week off work to clean the place before unpacking anything beyond the basics, and needed the whole week to get it done!

Shan5474 · 18/05/2024 19:05

Is he still there? I kind of hope so considering your photos! Are all of the tissues his and what has he been doing with them?? If I were you I’d withhold the rest of the payment and just do it myself tonight/tomorrow. Is it worth it for you to stay longer twiddling your thumbs while they potentially continue to do a shit job and you get deposit deductions

twoandcooplease · 18/05/2024 19:12

Holy fuck that's a disgrace!!

You actually weren't exaggerating! Unbelievable

He’s just called me and asked me to come upstairs from the lobby and inspect the place. He said “I just need to mop the wooden floor then i’m done.” So I went upstairs to inspect as per his request…

All of the mess is his!! I left the flat bare for him!!. You can even see the empty sandwich box from when he disappeared for over half an hour and came back and ate a sandwich!! He’s left his empty packaging and drink bottle on my floor. He then asked me which part of the wooden floor I want mopping !!!! I said “what do you mean?! All of it!!” He said some parts of the wooden floor were “okay” but others were “a bit more dirty” hence the question !!

Bathroom is also a mess. I did a “finger test” on one of the windows. A mark he’d left, I managed to rub off with my dry finger, no product.

How on earth has he asked me to come up and Inspect the place when it’s like that?!

That is shocking 😮!

I have rung and told his boss, he was not remotely apologetic or seemed concerned. Just said he will get it done, and reminded me that I didn’t book an hourly rate.

FFS I doubt you would mind the length of time it was taking if he appeared to efficiently be doing a decent job but he's not.

Peternabbit · 18/05/2024 19:20

As long as you have the receipt then you are covered

fettybord · 18/05/2024 19:21

I would leave an appalling review on their social media. And anywhere that you can review actually. That is disgraceful. You are going to have to do it yourself

fettybord · 18/05/2024 19:21

And I would not pay them another penny.

TerrifiedOfNoise · 18/05/2024 19:22

Muffins34 · 18/05/2024 15:09

Are you talking from personal experience ALovelyCup?

Did you still have deductions from your deposit?

They can’t deduct from your deposit if you have a receipt to say you paid for a professional clean. If they try to you can easily appeal it with the deposit protection scheme and will win.

Even took picture of the toilets and sinks 😂

Edited

Oo I like the building / flats on the left hugging the hill.

Muffins34 · 18/05/2024 19:35

Gone from bad to worse.

He called me up again to inspect. I did. The kitchen work top hadn’t even been wiped down. He’s also done this to my oven chimney when cleaning it (pics). He shrugged and said he didn’t know what happened, and that he followed the instructions on the cleaning product. I don’t know what he used, I wasn’t there when he cleaned it.

I rung the owner again and told him I want the deductions from my deposit reimburse.

Owner then threatened to put me on social media if I didn’t pay or if I tried to make a claim. Cleaned then filmed me on his phone.

I was furious at them doing that to a woman who lives alone.

in the end after arguing I just paid. No idea how I’m gonna explain this to landlord. Handing keys back now.

owner did not care about my side at all, he defended cleaner the whole time. I get the feeling they’re mates.

Cleaner is here right now, is he taking the piss?

Do not pay the remaining 50% until the company have completed their end of the agreement. Those photos are disgraceful. I’ve had several end of tenancy cleans and yes they take a lot of time to do a full clean in the oven, fridge/freezer, showers, inside of all cupboards etc and it costs top dollar - but the result has been perfect every time.

Sounds like they have found someone completely inexperienced to do the job.

GivePeaceAChance · 18/05/2024 19:51

couldn’t understand OP what did he claim to put on social media about you?

Riversideandrelax · 18/05/2024 19:53

Are you ok? That sounds awful. What has he done to the filters on the extractor fan? Looks like some cleaner residue on them?

cremebrulait · 18/05/2024 19:53

Before I forget, tenants indeed have a leg to stand on when they end their tenancy. I wouldn't take anyone at their word over "clean". The reason is that I have moved into flats which weren't properly cleaned /professionally cleaned. And yet the leaving tenant claimed it had been. The last flat I moved out of - the property owner called to ask me what products I used because the flat was just as clean and sparkling as when I moved in. So in many cases the estate agents probably do need to do another clean before leasing. Im currently renting from a friend and his wife flew up from Australia to oversee some works before we moved in - she told me she was in tears trying to clean some of the limescale on faucets, tiles, etc. The oven was sort of clean and took a lot of work. So OP if you leave it in a way that is perfectly clean they can't keep your deposit. If they can prove there are things unclean they can make deductions.

Now back to your cleaner OP - I've had the unfortunate situation in London MORE than once where a person who wasn't even employed by the agency showed up to do a clean!! They said they were replacing someone sick. Personally I think it might be a bit more shady - someone passing it off to someone without the right to be here... like UBER drivers were doing.

GivePeaceAChance · 18/05/2024 19:51

couldn’t understand OP what did he claim to put on social media about you?

He said that people complain about things like this all the time to get out of paying. And that he’ll put me on social media as trying to get out of paying the remaining balance.

As I said, I sent him numerous photos and videos throughout the day. He took the cleaners side the whole time.

Muffins34 · 18/05/2024 20:14

Yes I’m okay thank you. I’m really not sure what he’s done to the fan but they’ve never looked like that the whole 5 years I’ve lived there.

I’m wondering if I should even raise this to the landlord’s agency? As they could use it against me and blame me for using a dodgy cleaner (even though they’re were a sponsored ad on Google!) if I took other peoples advice on here and dispute it when it comes, I’d have more of a leg to stand on?

OP posts:
Liquorish · 18/05/2024 20:16

Seems the people complaining to “get out of paying” were probably duped out of a clean just like you OP. Complete scam artists. I would be so, so angry. Being made to pay for some idiot to sit and eat sandwiches and make things look worse. Sounds like he’s not so much as cleaned a cup before. Do they have some social media you could post these pictures on?

Mt61 · 18/05/2024 20:21

Did you have to have a professional cleaner?
could you not have cleaned up after yourself? Saved yourself £180 😌

PrincessofWells · 18/05/2024 20:24

You're a mug for paying. The damage to the cooker hood looks like an inappropriate cleaning fluid was used. The best one for hood filters is hg oven and bbq cleaner for the filters, and stainless Steel cleaner for the rest.

No wonder landlords get pissed off with tenants leaving properties in that state 😳

Gillbil · 18/05/2024 20:30

That's horrible, sorry. Definitely take video of him in the space and ask him to do a walk round and ask him if he thinks this work is 'clean'
Definitely don't pay any more.

PrincessofWells · 18/05/2024 20:30

The damage to the hood filters is not repairable. There are wipe marks all over the hood itself, it's not been polished. There's mould over the window frames, there's mould and limescale all over the shower and doors. There's so much wrong with the little we can see. You've been had.

The landlord would be perfectly entitled to pay for a proper clean and deduct from your deposit.

2Old2Tango · 18/05/2024 20:36

I had an end of tenancy deep clean at beginning of last year on a 3 bed detached. It cost me £530 (Greater London) and took over 6 hours. They were very thorough (2 people) and even took the oven apart to clean it properly. It was waaaaaayyy cleaner than when I'd moved in, but my bastard LL still charged for some things. Fortunately the inventory at the beginning of the tenancy was very detailed and had hundreds of photos, so I was able to prove some of the things weren't my fault and reduce his bill.

Cornflakelover · 18/05/2024 20:41

I use baby oil on stainless steel & hobbs 😂 and it always comes up perfectly clean and shiny

I just couldn’t be bothered to be honest love. And act smug all you like sweet but you’ll find a lot of places have it written in the tenancy contract that it needs to be professionally cleaned. I wouldn’t have done the best job. Cleaners are putting themselves out there to be hired and just because in your mind you deem it laziness or such, doesn’t mean I deserve to be conned out of my money.
