Cleaner is here right now, is he taking the piss?

It’s a lovely sunny, and my day plans have been cancelled because I’m waiting around on a cleaner doing my end of tenancy clean.

Today is my final day of tenancy. I currently live alone in an apartment. I use to have an flatmate but she moved out in December. Only a small 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom (one of them a tiny en-suite) and an open pan kitchen/small living room.

I booked the end of tenancy clean at 9am, this is the earliest appointment I could get. I wanted a first thing appointment so I could be out asap, I work Mon-Fri so it’s my day off, and none of my things are here.

i have paid a 50% deposit upfront, then will pay the remaining 50% to the company upon completion of works. Afterwards I then have to hand the keys back to my landlord.

He arrived an hour and 15 minutes late, didn’t get here until 10.15am (no apology or explanation) didn’t start the work until 10:30am because he spent 15 mins talking to himself about what he’s going to start with first, generally dithering about. At one point he actually sat down.

He arrived with very minimum cleaning products I noticed. At one point he said he needed gloves, so he walked back to his car (parked in a car park a 5 minute walk away!)

He came back, and finished one bedroom/bathroom in no time. Then said he was going to go to the shop for drinking water. The shop is on my street corner. He was gone for over half an half!! I called to ask where he was. When he came back he sat at my table and ate sandwiches he’d bought from the shop.

While I was gone I noticed in the bathroom (which was my previous flatmate’s) the tiles had not been cleaned properly (the tiles are textured and have depth in some areas, not sure if I’m explaining that properly) and still had some residue.

While he was having his lunch (after a late start and after only 1 hours work !) I asked him about the tiles, he said that’s a different service and he did not have the products? He had literally lightly cleaned over the surfaces.

I said to him “So what’s the difference between this End Of Tenancy clean, which I’m paying £180 for today, and a generic clean which would usually charge £16 an hour round here?” He could not answer and said he’ll go back to it at the end and “try his best”.

Is now 14:50 and he’s still only half way through the work. He’s done, 1 bathroom, 1 bedroom, and is half way through the kitchen. He still has the rest of the kitchen to complete, then the living room, and the remaining bathroom.

It’s a tiny apartment!

I’m convinced my deposit will be deducted due to it “not cleaned to a professional standard”. Its just doesn’t have that fresh cleaned look? Or even smell any different. I’ve had cleaning ladies before and it’s looks shined and spotless, and smells amazing.

It’s costing me almost £200.

Wow I would be complaining big time, if I can turn over a 6 bed and 4 holiday cottage in one day and get constant good how clean they are reviews there's something wrong here

Muffins34 · 18/05/2024 18:01

I have rung and told his boss, he was not remotely apologetic or seemed concerned. Just said he will get it done, and reminded me that I didn’t book an hourly rate.

End of tenancy cleans take minimum 2 cleaners. It's completely different from just cleaning.

You've been ripped off OP.

£180 is my reason.

Absolutely!
As if you should get stuck in there right beside him 😆

itsmylife7 · 18/05/2024 18:06

Windows and surrounding should ve wiped, along with doors, frames etc.

This guy hasn't guy a clue.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/05/2024 18:10

I’ve paid for a tenancy clean before and still got part of the deposit deducted. And DH once did it and although the landlord tried to take our deposit they didn’t win. The last house we left I cleaned it. It took hours but at least I knew it was done and we got all our deposit. That said this clean you have paid for should be done properly so I would try not to pay them

fortunetellingwizard · 18/05/2024 18:11

My cleaner advised my son when leaving a tenancy to always book the same cleaners that the letting agent uses. They will work to the agency standards. She also told him to hand in his own keys as soon as the cleaners leave, and make sure to get a timed and dated receipt. She has known some cleaners to be a bit lazy, not clean properly, and then to tell the agency it must have been the vacating tenants coming back in and messing it up.

He’s just called me and asked me to come upstairs from the lobby and inspect the place. He said “I just need to mop the wooden floor then i’m done.” So I went upstairs to inspect as per his request…

All of the mess is his!! I left the flat bare for him!!. You can even see the empty sandwich box from when he disappeared for over half an hour and came back and ate a sandwich!! He’s left his empty packaging and drink bottle on my floor. He then asked me which part of the wooden floor I want mopping !!!! I said “what do you mean?! All of it!!” He said some parts of the wooden floor were “okay” but others were “a bit more dirty” hence the question !!

Bathroom is also a mess. I did a “finger test” on one of the windows. A mark he’d left, I managed to rub off with my dry finger, no product.

How on earth has he asked me to come up and Inspect the place when it’s like that?!

This is insane! And you left the place bare?! Why has he created all this mess... and yep there is the empty sandwich packet. Can you send these photos over?

ChickyBricky · 18/05/2024 18:14

Oh gosh OP you really have my sympathy. Reminds me of a removals team I booked through AnyVan, who kept me waiting all day (arriving 6 hours late) because "we took a wrong turn at Grimsby." They then literally pissed all over the bathroom I'd cleaned and spent the whole time talking about how little AnyVan paid them, hustling for tips. Which I gave them, because I was stupid and scared! (From now on it's always Shiply for removals...)

He's obviously some dodgy fuck who has blagged his way into this work. The agency should recompense you for this. AnyVan didn't, with me, but that's probably because I was nervous about reporting them and didn't get around to it for a few months. It's hard to leave negative feedback on crooks who know where you live.

Good luck with your move, and wishing you every happiness in your new home. Hopefully this is just the opposite of a teething problem and you can soon close this whole chapter and forget about it!

LookItsMeAgain · 18/05/2024 18:18

I’d email those photos to the agency and state that if any part of your deposit is withheld because of the cleaning job not being up to scratch, you’ll be seeking compensation from them for the difference (or something like that)

Just this morning I paid £884 for a full deep clean on a 3 bed semi. The hose was empty of any furniture. I wasn't there because I'm over seas but the next door neighbour has been keeping an eye on the property. He is happy. I am happy. It took 3 people 2 days including cleaning the over, the garage and the greenhouse.
The windows were washed inside and out. The walls and ceilings washed down including inside the wardrobes. The bathrooms are sparkling which I am amazed about, at one point I was going to replace the bathroom suite. . The house is immaculate and I'm happy with the time and the price.
I would speak to the manager of the agency and say this isn't good enough.
Good luck. Hope you get the deposit back.

Sounds like you've managed to save yourself money if they've degrimed the oven and bathroom suite enough that you don't need to replace!

You’d be suprised, they’ll deduct where they see fit, it’s happened to a few friends of mine after they hired professional cleaners.

Another friend of mine works for an estate agents and she says they do it all the time and tenants don’t really have a leg to stand on.

Hence my concern right now.

No they can’t just do that. It has to go through DPS or whichever one they’re using. They look at photos before and after. Our carpet was cleaner after we left that before we moved in! Our ll accused us of all sorts but we got all our deposit back minus some cooker knobs which melted when the grill caught fire and I meant to replace anyway.

PrincessofWells · 18/05/2024 18:35

It took me 14 hours to clean a 2 bed two bath apartment thoroughly and its spotless. That includes the oven but not carpet vacuuming/carpet cleaning. £180 is very cheap for an end of tenancy clean. It usually takes two people around 6 hours. So 12 hours total. I'm slow!

Cornflakelover · 18/05/2024 18:36

My sons landlord was fab recently
she gave us a list of what she would look for and even include the type of wall paint and door paint if we needed to paint anything

so it was easy to do

we cleaned it ourself 2 hours or so over a few days
huge bed 2 bath flat

she went over afterwards and gave us a check list of anything that still needed to be done and said she wished that all her tennants cleaned like we did 😂

There was only a few things that needed to be done that which we did

I did a video walk through of the flat and took photos of everything including the plugs extractor fans inside the oven dishwasher and fridge / freezer

we even replaced the gravel on the balcony & cleaned the windows inside and out

It was easy as the flat was empty and had new carpets

got all the deposit back last week

mathanxiety · 18/05/2024 18:41

Tale a photo of him sitting eating his sandwiches.

Also the tiles he hasn't cleaned.

Send it to the company he works for.

Dispute the charge.

They've sent you someone who doesn't know what he's doing and is massively taking the piss.

Cornflakelover · 18/05/2024 18:44

Even took picture of the toilets and sinks 😂

Cleaner is here right now, is he taking the piss?

TeaandScandal · 18/05/2024 18:44

I’d insist they sent someone else in his place, op.
Stuff like thinking he only has to clean the visibly dirty bit of the floor is mind bogglingly stupid 🙄
I’d lay odds he’s never done this before.

PrincessofWells · 18/05/2024 18:44

That shower is filthy. There's limescale and mould all over not to mention the 'bits' left in the shower. That is not a professional clean and I wouldn't be paying. In fact I'd be asking for a refund.

wellington77 · 18/05/2024 18:45

If you are genuinely worried I would cut your losses and get cleaning instead of posting on here personally, not what you wanted I know but could mean you get your deposit money back

Crepester · 18/05/2024 18:49

Yeah my live- in landlord tried to blame me for the rust on the bathroom radiator and I claimed I had photos on my old phone (I didn’t 😂but it was definitely already there when I moved in and she knew that ) and I’d be disputing any deduction based on that. Especially as she looked at the bathroom before I left and said everything was fine in the presence of my friend.

So she backed down immediately and gave me the deposit back in full although she hung on to it as long as she did. I paid a cleaner about £40 for about 2 hours just to deep clean the en-suite bathroom and I did my room myself. The rest was shared space so I didn’t have to clean that.

HesNotTheSunIAm · 18/05/2024 18:55

OP you're best off speaking with your landlord/letting agency about this. With my current and previous letting agency, they require you to have the property professionally cleaned at the end of tenancy, no option to do it yourself, and you have to provide them with the receipt as proof. The upside of this though is that if the clean isn't done correctly/ to standard, they actually then chase the cleaning company themselves to come back and complete the job, and it isn't taken from my deposit. I understand you may not have signed the same kind of contract, and may have it taken out of your deposit if the property isn't cleaned properly, in which case I'd open a dispute with the cleaning company to cover this cost, even taking them to small claims court if I had to.

LizzieBennett73 · 18/05/2024 18:56

I think you've been scammed, OP.

Any decent company would have sent someone else in.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/05/2024 18:57

Jesus wept, is he ACTUALLY a cleaner or did he just wander in off the street to hang out in your flat?

My bathroom and kitchen are currently cleaner than that and I haven't cleaned either for at least two days (and the bathroom floor hasn't been done in a week!).

I'd ask him what time he expects to be finished by, given he still has to clean literally everything you've photographed!

Crepester · 18/05/2024 18:58

Muffins34 · 18/05/2024 15:21

I sincerely hope he’s not staying late because I’m literally waiting on him to hand the keys back so I can go to my new home! 😂😂 I’m not paying an hourly rate, it was a set fixed sum of £180. When I queried how many hours it would take I was just told “it can take longer than usual”

Thank you, i think I will take your advice and dispute the remaining 50% fee

Mine was a fixed fee too of a similar price for a one bedroom flat, but they still gave me a time for when they’d start and finish. I wasn’t there but I think it was two staff.

It’s highly unprofessional that they didn’t give any timings beyond the start time- which he didn’t even keep to .

I’ve just seen your photos and that is a complete joke - what are they playing at?

The boss doesn’t care now but he may change his tune if he doesn’t get the other half of the fee.

Also write a detailed account of the whole shambles and email it to them tonight if possible so there’s an immediate written record.

Hope you get it all sorted and no deductions are made!
