AiBU to decline sun hol with relatives due to food timings?

Normally I go on hols wirh dh and 2 tween dcs in June. We go on a sun hol half board, with breakfast and dinner in a package. I always put on weight due to having breakfast, a small lunch and wine with dinner. We eat dinner at 7pm so not too late.

I am 5ft 3, 53 years old, weigh 11 stone. I follow a loose version of the 16:8 to maintain this, not eating til 12pm and eating 2 meals a day.

I don't mind putting up the weight as weather is fine over the summer and I exercise a lot with walks, jogging. It comes off over a month.

For the past few years, I have taken a second sun hol in Sep/Oct with 2 relatives one 40 years and one 70s, also half board.

I find it much harder to get the weight down after it due to winter and not able to exercise as much outside. I work fulltine and don't have loads of time for gyms.

The two relatives eat breakfast, then nothing til dinner at 8pm. I tried this and was very hungry by dinner. I suggested getting dinner early and one laughed like as if I am greedy. The correct thing for me would be to skip breakfast and eat a lunch. This would make the waiting for 8pm dinner more bearable.

I am considering not going this year, as it looks odd not eating the breakfast. If i do eat breakfast I can't fast til 8pm and eat lots of calories with 3 meals.

I don't eat out or go to pubs at home so the dinner and wine is very important to me.

Also when I go on hols with the relatives, one drinks very little. One will share wine with me and will drink more than her share. They go to pubs to get beer after but I don't love the wine in pubs so the wine with the meal is my only chance. I try ordering a different wine to them so as to get my small bottle to myself.

Why are none of you eating three meals a day? Don't you all get very hungry!

I haven't eaten three meals in any one day in 25 years. It's not uncommon.

I think she sounds diligent and dedicated to good health.

It's not ok to put on weight when one already is battling weight-related medical conditions.

I agree.

I’m guessing everyone berating OP has poor health.

It makes them feel worse to see OP so disciplined so they are trying to bring her down as well.

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/05/2024 22:33

That is my conclusion, @pootlin

Imobsessedwithsuccesion · 17/05/2024 22:48

I'm not getting why OP can't eat out or have a wine when she's not on holiday?

Have fruit for breakfast
Get a sandwich for lunch
Proper dinner

Really not seeing the issue

That isn’t suitable for 16:8

Fruit is going to shoot her blood sugar. She needs protein (egg probably), having fasted for 16 hours since the previous night’s dinner.

the issue is struggling with hormonal weight gain. It’s horrible, believe me.

We live rurally. We have very strict drink driving laws, not in the UK. It would cost lots to go out for dinner and get a taxi home.

Generally, I go for a nice lunch every few weeks. I drink wine at the weekends at home. It is a real treat to be able to have wine with dinner at a restaurant.

We live in a high cost country. Even to get a glass of wine is ££££.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/05/2024 22:59

OP your posts are very confusingly conflicted. Eg it’s expensive to drink out v wine in pubs is crap v I never drink at home v I only drink at home.

whatever the truth of the matter is you have very strangely rigid eating, drinking and exercise rules that you cannot flex or relax on holiday. Your holiday companions sound equally rigid. It sounds utterly joyless.

are prople really still propagating this pseudo science shit? This is how people like the op get into the mess the op is in. 🙄

TropicalRain · 17/05/2024 23:10

OP, you work full time and have a family to care for. Your holidays are for your enjoyment and comfort. Skip the holiday if it isn't enjoyable. It doesn't matter why it isn't enjoyable, and whether you or your relatives should eat 1 or 10 meals a day at certain times or whatever. It is irrelevant what anyone thinks about your regime, you know you and you know what works best. You sound like you work hard and put in lots of effort generally, you owe yourself to at least be able to relax and enjoy yourself on a holiday.

My relatives do not comment but they eat small portions and little wine themselves.

Wine in pubs is rotten, I have tried. One relative is being 'good' im front of the other person, not ordering much wine but will drink what I order. It is done discreetly, pouring more whem I am at the buffet. Once she said she will keep the table while I choose my food. I said I will keep the table. They have drinks in pubs after. I really like the hotel wine and hate ordering a bottle and then only getting one or two glasses.

I started ordering my own small bottle which is 2.5 glasses. Relatives ordered one of these between 2.

I would put up with this if I wasn't getting a holiday otherwise as you can't get everything perfect.

2.5 glasses of wine on 16:8 is more than double what is recommended. For someone who seems so rigid about not eating breakfast but needing the small bottle of wine, you appear to have bigger issues than inflexibility with intermittent fasting. If you are consuming alcohol within your window and going to sleep less than 4 hours later, you might as well eat the breakfast as the alcohol won't be proceseed will prevent you losing weight more than eating a decent breakfast and light lunch and expanding your window to 12:12 for a week will.
Only eating two meals in your window isn't healthy either and if you are starving between them that is because you are forcing your body back into fasting when it's not supposed to be. You should be eating every 3 to 4 hours in your eating window of 8 hours, it takes some getting used to but you should never be starving on intermittent fasting. Leaving 6 hours between meals defeats the purpose of 16 hours fasting.

I got told it by a doctor who was helping me with menopause weight gain.

TwixOwl · 17/05/2024 23:16

It sounds like you're 12 years old. Very bizarre carry on.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/05/2024 23:17

@canp literslly nobody ever got obese by eating fruit at the wrong time of day. Just use your noodle.

SeriaMau · 17/05/2024 23:39

Totally insoluble problem. No suggestions at all.
Smaller portions perhaps?

Inappropriacy · 17/05/2024 23:39

Really Mumsnet. Is this an appropriate advert?
On a thread about obviously disordered eating habits?

I only have two meals a day my first one at 1.30 or as late as possible, it works for me. I would ask at the place you are staying at (because of medical reasons- your diet) to have a packed breakfast. You can then eat it later at a time that suits you. When your friends have their breakfast just drink unsweetened black coffee or tea.
I mustn’t eat food for an hour after I have taken the medicine I have to take each morning so it seems quite reasonable request.
I also carry a banana and a flask of mint tea in my bag for a snack but I wouldn’t like to reverse the hard work I have done to loose weight with wine and ice-creams.

OhHelloMiss · 18/05/2024 00:01

@5YearsLeft yes, I was unsure if we were talking about a 'sun holiday' from the newspaper The sun! Hence asking op....

@merryhouse can bugger off with the stupid comment, not a great look for her.

Mummyslittlegiraffe
Every other day exercising is not enough for me. I walk 20k steps each day on hols. When I am at home I jog every other day for 30mins and walk for an hour every other day while being as active as I can around fulltime work.

If I exercised every other day I would pile weight on.

I also fill up with salads, fish and have one scoop of ice cream on hols. I know I should cut out the 2 or 3 glasses of wine a night on hols.

OP, losing weight isn’t all about steps and cardio. Lifting weights and training will get you better results.

Don’t beat yourself up for having wine on holiday. You’re on holiday. You’re supposed to relax and eat/drink what you want!! Just don’t make it a habit of having wine throughout the week at home.

None of this seems like a good reason to miss spending time with loved ones.

tbh, they don't sound very loved

don't eat breakfast if you don't want it
drink less wine, or obsess less about claiming your share, if you're concerned about putting on weught.

Dibbydoos · 18/05/2024 01:13

Just make sure you have healthy snacks that you can eat between breakfast and dinner. I have to admit if I eat a high protein breakfast, like a full English no toast/bread, I don't need to eat until dinner time, but I prefer to skip breakfast, like you and eat high protein lunch and dinner.

Well done for managing your weight so well! I'm trying to shed hence high protein foods - it surprised me just how full you are. I've had a few days this week where I have only eaten 1 meal all day so hoping the blubber starts to fall off soon, lol!

Hiitsmegirl · 18/05/2024 01:37

It seems like these people are not worth the time. You aren't declining a holiday due to food. It is because of how these people make you feel. Skip the holiday. You relationships with these people sounds weird, fake and controlling. What culture are you from?

Erdinger · 18/05/2024 02:17

Holidays and outings are meant to be enjoyable and fun. This one appears to be causing you stress. Maybe skip it or reschedule it for April/ May where you still have time for your exercise regime at the end of it . Up to you. I’ve travelled with friends who were on more rigid diets/eating plans than me and it didn’t bother me in the least.

RosieIGrant · 18/05/2024 02:46

Kindly, you seem to have issues around d food you may need to work through. You’re allowed a looser routine whilst on holiday.

No bloody wonder either with these relatives.

Yes you can have a looser routine on holiday but OP doesn't want to loosen it.

Beautiful3 · 18/05/2024 05:00

Could you go for breakfast and dinner, and buy some bread, jam, crisps for. unch. You can losr the weight when you get home.
