Is mumsnet right wing?

There are so many benefits bashing threads on here I’m really starting to wonder. Do the majority of people posting on mumsnet lean heavily to the right?

This is a prime example of a right winger.

🤣🤣🤣
I've never voted tory in my life.

SigourneyHoward · 17/05/2024 07:45

How is FWR right wing @Noname1000 ?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/05/2024 07:46

Noname1000 · 17/05/2024 07:38

The FWR topic seems to be quite right wing.

That old trope. It is not right wing to care about women and children’s rights. Objecting to the medicalisation of vulnerable children and to intact males in women’s prisons, hospital wards, changing rooms, sports etc transcends party politics.

IncompleteSenten · 17/05/2024 07:48

I think there's likely the same mix on here as anywhere. Probably slightly more left leaning if anything.

aoirwhklzxca · 17/05/2024 07:48

No, I am suspicious of the validity of most of the deliberately goady benefit threads tbh.

Meshka · 17/05/2024 07:49

I believe MN is more right wing than it states on threads because "Liberal" lefties love to bash anyone who votes differently from them... ironic really

IncompleteSenten · 17/05/2024 07:50

"The FWR topic seems to be quite right wing."

🙄 if caring more about women and girl's safety and biological reality than men's feelings makes someone rightwing then sign me up for whatever nasty shitshow farage is strutting around in these days.

Chickenuggetsticks · 17/05/2024 07:51

I’m a centrist and think it leans left. I think also what left is has shifted over the decades, used to be about labour rights, trade unions, fundamental civil rights. The shift in focus to welfare etc doesn’t mean that many people of a labour bent don’t see it as a necessary evil rather than a “good” thing as such. I imagine there a lot of Frank Field type of Labour kicking around.

fromtheshires · 17/05/2024 07:52

Sadly mumsnet is a bit of a cesspit when you go into some sections of the forum.

The vitriol I see against men for no reason other than he's a man, the anti trans stuff is huge on here, and generally speaking everyone who comments is perfect and can do no wrong. I tend to take the balanced view on things but stay away from a lot of it as just putting a what if point across makes me just as bad or 'the enemy too'

Me and my DH think a lot of people are neurotic on this app and he's aghast when I read some of the stuff.

On the flip side, there are some really good supportive sections on here.

Don’t be silly, it’s packed with erm women who don’t like their sex based rights being taken away, mostly left wing I would say.

Brefugee · 17/05/2024 07:52

well I'm an actual Marxist. So. Meh.

Blackcats7 · 17/05/2024 07:55

I would say more right wing than left wing.

AmusedMaker · 17/05/2024 07:55

feminists are traditionally left wing yes, but the whole trans debate has had them agreeing with right wingers who support their views on the subject - I think? ( Not an expert on this at all ) as it’s all too much for me.

But it goes to show that political views can shift depending on the subject and how it affects you.

IncompleteSenten · 17/05/2024 08:03

Politics is a circle. Left and right are both as far away from each other as it's possible to get and right next to each other.

I was a member of the swp when I was younger and looking back at the meetings there was some batcrap crazy shit said. Who they (we I guess, me back then) hated was different but the hate was as strong.

Petrine · 17/05/2024 08:08

I think it’s far more right wing than it would appear at first glance.

Tory bashing is prevalent here and anyone disagreeing is quickly jumped on thus giving the impression that everyone’s in agreement. It simply isn’t worth giving an opposing view.

sunnydaysanddaydreams · 17/05/2024 08:11

Benefits are getting much more criticism on here lately then I think they did in previous years. Ironically, they're harder to get then ever before, so maybe it can be argued the government is unfortunately winning the battle of the minds

Or people think theres genuinely a problem with the way the system works? Not everything is because the government is telling people there is a problem. I have no idea about it tbh but people disagreeing isn’t always a consequence of governmental propaganda.

A lot of posters probably do just avoid it, given the style of responses

usernother · 17/05/2024 08:20

I think people are bashing those who aren't entitled to benefits and who are cheating the system. You don't have to be right wing to think that doing that is wrong.

sunnydaysanddaydreams · 17/05/2024 08:20

@Chickenuggetsticks what problem do they have with it? Why have they woken up to it just now? Benefits are getting harder and harder to get, the treatment of benefit receivers is becoming more and more degrading so technically if they actually thought there was a problem they should be happy with the changes. It just makes me think they have absolutely no idea what it would be like to survive of the very little amount that is given

I think some people judge whether someone is entitled to benefits without knowing the whole story.

Radical feminists are pro-women, not "anti-trans". I'm afraid I cannot bring myself to abandon my feminist principles on the grounds that some (and it's not all - I saw a group of men only today hooting joyfully that feminists "have brought in on themselves, they wanted equality..." with regard to the issue of women's sports) people of a generally right-wing persuasion also don't think trans-identifying males should be able to get into women's spaces and sports.

That's not Holly Vallance being original, by the way!

Holly Valance as a political commentator is hilarious! I really hope the pp was being ironic and knows Holly was paraphrasing!

AstralSpace · 17/05/2024 08:26

Most people are central with some leanings to left or right but the media wants you to think that everyone is extreme and divided into groups like loony lefties or right wing nutters.

JohnnyLuLus · 17/05/2024 08:27

I think Mumsnet reflects society, and as a country we are definitely more right leaning.
