To think friends decor is gross?

Stayed at a friends house this weekend with mutual friends and they raved about how nice her living room is and I was baffled.

It’s an extremely dark grey with one wall with equally dark grey wallpaper. Brown sofas and a yellow armchair. Huge jar with pampas grass. Grey carpet with a cream rug. Black plastic tv stand, concrete side tables.

She must think my deco is gross and shit. But I genuinely was so baffled by their reaction.

My sitting room has a decoupaged ceiling with an original Victorian ceiling rose painted in purple, red, silver and metallic green. Cornice is purple, walls crimsom. I am entirely aware it is some people's nightmare (along with the Alma Tadema and Botticelli prints and medieval-style tapestry), but I am not expecting everyone to like it. Nor would I expect them to criticise - and nor would I criticise someone else's decor. Tastes differ, thank goodness, or the world would be a dull place.

I'd love to see that!

I don’t get why people use such vitriolic words. I get rhe op is envious and lost control of herself, but random responders..saying things like it sounds disgusting, awful, grim, horrible.

just why use these words for someone’s home. There is no need. I mean “disgusting” really??

It sounds similar to how my biological aunt’s old house was decorated, and while it wasn’t my taste, I found it comfortable enough. Besides, I was there to socialise, not look at the contents of the house!

Cherrysherbet · 16/05/2024 14:28

Glad you’re not my ‘friend’.

Delatron · 16/05/2024 14:29

Is your house very boring OP?

The brown and yellow sound quite 70s which is back in fashion. Plus the concrete side tables. All sounds stylish to me. But then I have dark grey (Downpipe!) walls and a blue velvet sofa..

Sounds great actually. My sister spent years doing her whole room in decoupage when we were kids and it looked bloody amazing.

Come on then op, post a picture of your perfect lounge for us to see.
Hers isn't everyone's cup of tea but elements of it do sound very 'on trend'.

I know it would be outing so you probably don't want to, but if you didn't mind sharing a pic I'd really love to see it.

I'll see if I can find one.

I'd love to see that!

Tbh I couldn't care what someone elses taste was like as its their home. A friend of mine had taxidermy in hers not my cup of tea but I like seeing people pour their own personality into their home.

If it was filthy and you were surrounded by rats I could understand it.

Wouldn't work in my house (way too small) but I love it!

Who has pampas grass in 2024?

Oh, I know! I mean, really? Sooo 2021!

PinotDragon · 16/05/2024 18:00

You sound pretty snide. Your poor friend has decorated her home to her taste and you come online and say its gross? Gross would be if she had poo decorating the walls and overflowing ashtrays as knick knacks! Hope she sees this and realises what a total cow baggage you are!!

I don't think I could do it, but that doesn't mean I don't like it!

WhenWillTheSunShineIWonder · 16/05/2024 18:09

Your behaviour is gross - with friends like you, who needs enemies?

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 16/05/2024 18:29

User478 · 15/05/2024 20:59

Isn't it pampas grass that swingers have? Was there also an upside down pineapple?

It's not 1980!

Meadowfinch · 16/05/2024 18:30

I understand completely OP. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to paint their rooms grey, but then I can't imagine why anyone would buy flouncey Little House on the Prairie dresses either.

Some people will do whatever they think is 'on trend'. Others have very different tastes.

It's her house, let her enjoy it in her own way

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 16/05/2024 18:30

CranfordScones · 15/05/2024 22:54

Who has pampas grass in 2024?

The people who aren't slaves to modish conformity.

It's been pretty in fashion for sometime. Do you all live under a rock???

buttnut · 16/05/2024 19:23

is the pampas grass= swingers thing actually true or a suburban myth/joke? My neighbours have it :/

I think it was briefly somewhat true in the 70s although a lot of people would have had it innocently.
