To think friends decor is gross?

Stayed at a friends house this weekend with mutual friends and they raved about how nice her living room is and I was baffled.

It’s an extremely dark grey with one wall with equally dark grey wallpaper. Brown sofas and a yellow armchair. Huge jar with pampas grass. Grey carpet with a cream rug. Black plastic tv stand, concrete side tables.

She must think my deco is gross and shit. But I genuinely was so baffled by their reaction.

Who has pampas grass in 2024?

Apparently swingers. Also having a heart shaped wreath on the front door year round is a sign.
My neighbours have pampas grass in their front garden. They are in their 40s....

The only bad taste I see here is OP's attitude.

mamaandbabas · 17/05/2024 19:32

With friends like you, who needs enemies.

Jeannie88 · 17/05/2024 19:37

The post title sounds very rude and a bit snobby. I don't care about my friends' decor. Yes I may have my own opinions but the qualities of my friends is what I value.

Is this what mean girls do after they leave school?

I hope she doesn’t see this. She’d definitely recognise her sitting room.

Yup, just mean and unnecessary 🙄

Well, if it’s real then OP is clearly a very unhappy and bitter person, so I would just pity her if I was the friend rather than take anything personally. I’d definitely end the friendship though, as who can be doing with someone with that attitude in their life? I hope you manage to find peace with yourself and become a better person soon, OP.

Not your house, not your problem…..

I love judging other people's decor (SILENTLY, IN MY HEAD) but it's a game that ceases to be fun if everyone has the same taste, doesn't it? I mean, isn't variety just much more joy for everybody?

Personally, I would die a slow death if forced to live with tasteful neutrals, but I can still recognise and appreciate others' choices.

NoDought · 17/05/2024 22:10

Imagine hosting someone for a full weekend and then learning they came home and slagged off your decor to the internet.

Maybe her parents used to have pampas grass in their front garden. And she has fond memories of the garden.

"Pampas grass, Cortaderia selloana, used to be a common sight in front gardens, but fell out of favour, largely thanks to the urban myth that a pampas in a front garden signalled that the homeowners were, ahem, swingers. "

found on a gardening site.

😂

Grey has been out for years love. As have concrete nesting tables. Drab.

Grey is very much in. Often with stark white. But actually having colours in rooms is now very much in - very fashionable DD and DS have chosen peacock blue in their living rooms, but grey and white in kitchens. Trendy DinL has wallpaper with greyish pattern, which looks stylish and I like it. But does it matter what's in fashion if you like it? None of the above chose for fashionability but because they liked the colours. You're a bit judgy.

Hello and welcome to 2024 where you can buy anything and everything in shops and online. It still doesn’t make the decor “nice”.

If you don't care what we think then why are you here?

Sounds horrendous. Is it a new build?

I have a grey lounge with a grey velvet sofa and bright yellow arm chairs.

You're not invited to my house

I am finding this thread funny as I agree with the majority that it is no ones business what makes you happy! I am actually thinking all the posting to social media of interiors is what makes people feel that it is ok to have a strong opinion due to the "hey guys, what do you think?" posts.
Incidentally, I remember the grey fad the last time round, and yes we had lots of grey and white, but we liked it at the time. I live in an lovely old house now, and my childen are adults. We love the eclectic mix of styles, colours (and clutter) that we have accumulated during our lives and all the fun times and history that it reflects. Once your house truly becomes a home, the walls are just the backdrop to your story, whatever colour you paint them.

JustKeepWalkingPast · 18/05/2024 16:55

It's not your house, not your business.
