AIBU to ask DHs family to take their shoes off?

Toffifee1 · 15/05/2024 14:05

We‘re a shoes off house and my parents and my husbands parents had the same rule at home although adult visitors were usually not asked to take their shoes off when we grew up but they also didn‘t go upstairs.

Despite taking shoes off in her own home i have to ask my MIL to take her shoes off EVERY SINGLE TIME. I have explained that i have a crawling baby who’ll touch everything and put her fingers into her mouth and i‘m trying to teach my toddler not to run in with his shoes on..
MIL usually just sweeps in and i stop her in the living room or kitchen and ask her to take them off to which she replies „but they‘re clean“ (i haven‘t witnessed her ability to fly yet) and „I’ll get cold feet“ (we have floor heating and i then offer her warm socks).

My floors are also not disgusting in case anyone is wondering because i‘d understand wanting to keep shoes on if that were the reason.

Is it rude to ask other adults who do it in their own home to take their shoes off? AIBU? Any tipps?

My in-laws are the same and yes, I make them take their shoes off. Your house, your rules.

heldinadream · 15/05/2024 14:07

Provide slippers, like they do in hotels. But YANBU. Stop her at the door and insist!

Yes i think i‘ll order slippers and place them in the entrance, that is a great idea.

My in-laws declared we thought we were posh asking to take shoes off when we bought our first house. We had persistent shoe -wearers too. One walked dog poo all through my house and the other on seeing our light coloured stair carpet said ‘that won’t stay clean long’ as she walked up our stairs in her shoes!
Some people think it’s rude to ask people to take off their shoes, but I think it’s ruder to insist on keeping them on visiting a ‘no shoe’ household!

We also have a light colored stair carpet(not our decision)!

I agree with this. My in-laws always take their shoes off when they arrive but they would absolutely refuse to walk just in their socks or bare feet. They expect the host to provide slippers. This may sound odd but it is a cultural thing and they provide slippers for us when we go there. Some people are very uncomfortable just wearing socks (me included).

Toffifee1 · 15/05/2024 14:19

I found ones that say „guests“ and a carpet saying „shoe parking“. Have already send the link to DH for him to agree to this not so subtle purchase.

Why do you not like wearing socks?
MIL does not provide slippers either, so i never thought about the slipper idea before because i personally wouldn’t want to put used slippers on my feet😅.

We got dog poo and chewing gum walked into our carpet so when we re carpeted we said no shoes. Its amazing how many people are offended by this and do their best to walk in mud to the hallway just to prove a point or make snide comments about us being "posh". Nothing to do with that, and it was mainly when we did have a crawling baby that I didn't want crawling over whatever may get walked in from outside.

The cheap hotel ones can be chucked in the wash! So they will have no excuse to refuse them...

I don't know - it just feels wrong to me. Very uncomfortable. I've worn slippers all my life.
My DH travels a lot for work so we have a big stash of those free slippers you get in hotels. My in-laws also have their own set of slippers here that we reserve for them. No one else wears them.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/05/2024 14:27

When MIL visited us more regularly, she can't now, she had a pair of slippers at our house. And an old dressing gown and nightie to save on packing.

DH visits her nowadays and has slippers at his mother's.

We take slippers with us to close family and close friends.

I don‘t ever wear slippers but seeing more and more people commenting about them here seems to prove the point. Slippers ordered! Thank you all for your input.

(btw, i could‘ve done that sooner because one time MIL helped herself to DHs outside sandals that he used to kill off half dead mice that the cat left at the front door and MIL had seen that and walked all over the house in them!they were clearly dirty too)

I‘ve never seen or been offered guest slippers before but i also automatically take my shoes off if the host doesn’t wear shoes..

I just can't imagine wearing shoes round a house.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/05/2024 14:39

Your DH stamps on "half dead" mice to finish them off Shock. I have more objections to that than your MILs shod feet to be honest.

If anyone has a bettee suggestion for that i‘m keen on that too. He hates it, too. You can‘t let them live either because once bitten by the cat they‘ll die slowly and painfully if not killed off. :(

Agreed unless they physically can’t (my mum is on two canes and she’d possibly slip without shoes on and generally the only slippers people provide would make her fall. Same with mil)

My mother also always wears shoes (not slippers but walking shoes) for medical reasons but she brings her indoor pair with her and changes into that.

I was exactly the same with a crawling baby who put everything in his mouth. I just asked everyone to bring some slippers for when they were here and they all did and now I've got a porch that's basically slipper storage🤣🤣🤣

Tospyornottospy · 15/05/2024 14:58

I automatically just remove shoes at people’s houses, because over the years I’ve learnt most people, when asked, would prefer shoes off.

my MIL is exactly the same she NEVER removes them although it’s clear we all do. Although DH, when he can’t find his slippers, will wear fucking trainers upstairs (upstairs is 100% shoes off due to carpet etc) and it drives me nuts/we have so many arguments about
