The way customers are buying paddling pools, BBQs, beers etc - they think it’s going to be this weather for 2 months. Could be thunderstorms for some tomorrow. Plus rain and mid teensC next ten days (Midlands)

Im sure people throw out electric fans after every summer.

Im genuinely a nice person but somethings and some people annoy me

Doesnt that also apply to people who are irritated there is no lettuce available on a day when salad is appropriate? It annoys them, just like you said certain things annoy you.

TunaMayoP · 12/05/2024 06:44

No. It’s the way people were buying 3 cases of beer like they don’t have anything at home!

I don’t work in retail but my friends who do said yesterday there were more people shopping than during an average British day.

Do the nice outdoor stuff when the weather is nice and do the indoor stuff when weather is rubbish.

My friends above get customers who say they don’t go shopping when it rains- when they drive! What’s that about?

People shop to buy the stuff they want/need to enjoy the nice weather. We don’t keep alcohol in at home, we just buy it when we want it, so as we don’t have had friends round for a bbq yesterday we went out and bought some crates of beer/wine/bbq food etc. That’s a trip that wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t having friends round for a BBQ.
Next you’ll be saying it’s mad that shops are busier at Christmas!

justasking111 · 12/05/2024 08:29

All those summer dresses, shorts have languished on the rails. I wonder if they flew out this weekend

LyricalGangsta · 12/05/2024 08:41

I sorted out my jungle of a garden yesterday, scrubbed out the antiquated bbq (which looks a bit tired but is fully functional) then went out and bought some bbq food, some charcoal, 1 case of beer and a bottle of wine.

I then got to relax a bit as my 4 teens took ownership of cooking and even set up and played swingball together while I managed to get some sneaky pictures of them doing so.

Once it cooled off two of them came with me to walk the dog in the local park which by that time was completely empty and lovely.

If I hadn't gone mad and bought some beers and charcoal I wouldn't have had such a lovely evening with them.

I was considering going bonkers today and buying some picnic stuff to see if I could entice them all OUT somewhere with me but I'll keep an eye on the weather before being too rash....

Youdontevengohere · 12/05/2024 08:19

But why is ‘people go out and do stuff in nice weather’ an issue? People going out and buying things is good for the economy. It’s surely quite natural that people are more likely to buy a paddling pool for example in nice weather than in average weather?

No issues with doing nice things in the summer at all or even on random hot days/ weekends. I do nice things myself . I get the OPs post though, I've seen it.

But her point just seems to be ‘people go out and buy stuff for warm weather when it’s warm’, and while I completely agree with her, I can’t see why it’s at all worthy of derision.

Clingfilm · 12/05/2024 09:04

It's good for the economy - we went to the pub yesterday for a beer garden pint on a whim, wouldn't have considered it if it was raining, place was packed.

That pub and plenty of others would have had a cracking day's trading just because of the sun and good for them, (especially small) businesses need it.

sashh · 12/05/2024 09:38

You can get a pool for £5.

That's cheaper than a lot of soft play places.

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/05/2024 09:38

People like the sun and having a good time op @TunaMayoP

dont you?

Some find it strange, we're all different. Some will get it, others won't and think it's unreasonable. No harm in either point of view, sometimes it's just light hearted fun to ask about the different ways people do things, I'm often curious about stuff like this too. It's not intended to be a criticism, just a different perspective.
I really think the post/thread is supposed to be fairly harmless.

silentassassin · 12/05/2024 12:45

I dont really see what's so strange about people buying summer items, when hot weather starts to appear.

Seems pretty damn obvious to me. No stranger than people buying Christmas stuff in November/December - is that strange too?

I dont really see what there is to "get" about it.

OP the weather has been crap since… I think I remember a brief period of sunshine in June 2023 but largely since summer 2022.

Of course people are going to make the most of it!

I spent two weeks in Cornwall last August and September in a heatwave.

HelloDenise · 12/05/2024 13:53

bloodyplumbing · 12/05/2024 07:45

@HelloDenise why do people discuss people because they've bought three cases of beer or a paddling pool or a fan?

Based on their one visit to a store?

It's the same.

Which begs the question, why bother with forums at all?!

the80sweregreat · 12/05/2024 14:29

Big supermarket today was sold out of baguettes / burgers and so on by lunchtime
It's the same every year there is a glimmer of sun or a big tournament about to happen ( euros next month I think ?)
The big Corporations must love all this extra spending people do.

It keeps the economy going. We’d all be in trouble if no one bought anything.

Because it's fun to spend time outside when the weather it nice. We get about 2 weeks of genuinely nice weather in the UK so why not enjoy it?!

And the people eating and drinking it all are presumably enjoying it as well?

People bleat at Easter, Christmas, summer

Miserable feckers!

Youdontevengohere · 12/05/2024 15:30

Well we’ve been out today and bought a new paddling pool (ours popped at the end of last year but I’m sure this one will last the whole summer, not just today), some water pistols and a bubble machine and the kids have had a whale of a time! BBQ later with the meat we have leftover from yesterday’s BBQ. Good times.

Perpetualpotion · 12/05/2024 17:09

I went to Tesco earlier and it was clear things were out of control. People were in bikinis, speedos, swimming shorts, rubbing each other with sun cream and tanning lotion. People were openly filling paddling pools in the aisle because they couldn’t wait to get them home. The manager told me that they’re turning over half the shelf space to disposable barbecues.

'Oak before ash we are in for a splash.
Ash before oak we are in for a soak.
The ash trees have barely broken bud (i know it could be ash die-back, but this is all ash trees in local area) whereas oak trees in full leaf.
We are in for a hot summer.

MrsLighthouse · 12/05/2024 17:48

It’s SO uplifting buying stuff for summer ! Life is hard …let people enjoy themselves 😎

Please stop it with your upbeat happiness! It's just not right!

People might use their fans, bbqs, paddling pools and THREE cases of beer 🍻!

I think the OP is being ironic, not moaning…
