The way customers are buying paddling pools, BBQs, beers etc - they think it’s going to be this weather for 2 months. Could be thunderstorms for some tomorrow. Plus rain and mid teensC next ten days (Midlands)

Im sure people throw out electric fans after every summer.

OP posts:
bloodyplumbing · 12/05/2024 06:49

@TunaMayoP three cases of beer.... surely not!

It's almost like many shops have offers when you buy three cases of beer.

The rest of your post makes no sense.

I can't believe you and your friends sit bemoaning that people are out spending money because the suns out.

But misery finds misery I suppose.

MidnightPatrol · 12/05/2024 06:54

OP the weather has been crap since… I think I remember a brief period of sunshine in June 2023 but largely since summer 2022.

Of course people are going to make the most of it!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 12/05/2024 07:00

I went to the garden centre, bought plants and spent a lovely (but painful) afternoon in the garden. My cats have loved being able to go in and out without bothering me and I will now have lots of lovely flowers (hopefully) and a tidier garden.

We get so little of this weather, I don't begrudge anyone for enjoying it however they see fit.

I used to see it when I had a fuel station, regular customers, filling cars regularly, they'd be in twice a week quite often apart from Christmas Eve, New years Eve, bank holidays and sunny weekends and we had queues down the road, and yes, most had not long since been into put a decent amount of fuel in their car just a day or so before and would be back again for a decent amount a day or so later

Well if they came back that means their tank cant be full can it? people travel a lot over Christmas, how on earth do you know what their fuel gauge was or how much they travelled- did you personally go and check it and ask them about how much fuel they used? People dont go to get fuel for fun- literally noone enjoys spending money on petrol, its because they need it for travelling

We talk to our customers!!!! It was a small independent, we knew many of them personally, and the rest was general chit chat. The extra journey was very often unnecessary, determined due to this.

No. It’s the way people were buying 3 cases of beer like they don’t have anything at home!

I don’t work in retail but my friends who do said yesterday there were more people shopping than during an average British day.

Do the nice outdoor stuff when the weather is nice and do the indoor stuff when weather is rubbish.

My friends above get customers who say they don’t go shopping when it rains- when they drive! What’s that about?

Riiiiiiiiight.

user1471538283 · 12/05/2024 07:10

We get so little lovely weather! I'm all for people enjoying it as long as they don't play really loud music 10 hours a day.

I've been out trying to sort out my yard and despite the hard work it's been blissful for it to be warm.

Bjorkdidit · 12/05/2024 07:11

I bought 3 cases of beer yesterday because we didn't have any at home and was on offer in Morrisons for 3 for £23 so I'd have been daft to pay £13 for one case.

We drunk about half of one case last night and the rest will mean we have beer in for the foreseeable.

Shopping only took about half an hour which left plenty of time to go for a long walk and then sit in the garden for most of the evening, so it's not like we wasted a nice day shopping.

justasking111 · 12/05/2024 07:13

When it's wet here I go into town because I can park near the bank and anywhere else I need to be. My mother used to say you won't shrink if you get wet.

DivergentTris · 12/05/2024 07:13

bloodyplumbing · 11/05/2024 18:51

Don't be so ridiculous!!

Alcohol and domestic incidents are at their peak at Christmas!

There is an increase, I never said they peaked.

DivergentTris · 12/05/2024 07:20

Pickingmyselfup · 11/05/2024 18:04

Define "daft"

According to OP its buying summer related things that may or may not be needed and having a BBQ...

Amongst all things that could be wrong with people that seems pretty low down on the scale.

I need to buy a paddling pool since the one I have officially is no longer...when would be the appropriate time to purchase one? Would this week be OK since we will hopefully need one for the rest of the summer or should I wait until winter?

When is it appropriate to have a BBQ? In the rain? Christmas? Or when the sun actually comes out?

The post isn't about generally shopping for summer stuff, it's how the sun comes out and 'appears' like everyone goes 'daft' for it.

There will be those carrying on as normal but there does seem to be a very strange phenomenon where the sun seems to bring everyone out to do stuff - when if it were an average day weather-wise things may have waited until another day.

People working in particular industries will notice it.

DivergentTris · 12/05/2024 07:22

silverfullmoon · 11/05/2024 18:13

I think posters are seeing the lighter side of this in your OP but the sunshine does do strange things to people. You are not going daft, I have seen it in different ways

What absolute bloody nonsense. Sunshine doesnt cause domestic violence- alcohol abuse and men who have personality disorders do. If sunshine was the cause of violence then Spain, Greece and Italy would be a blood bath by now compared to the UK.

I did not even suggest it caused it, I simply said there was an increase, which is not the same.

Mintleafcocktail · 12/05/2024 07:23

Dont be so bloody miserable. This is first run of two days we've had where it's been glorious and its fantastic people are enjoying it after 8 months of constant rain and grey- they should embrace it, good for them.

For many of us, lack of sunlight significantly affects our mood so this is wonderful weather. There are studies on the rates of depression in countries which have a lack of sunlight for months.

I hope everyone and his dog has a BBQ and buys a fan today.

DivergentTris · 12/05/2024 07:23

Youdontevengohere · 11/05/2024 18:21

Why do you think they were buying petrol
then if they didn’t need petrol?? Weird.

This is exactly the point it was a weird thing people did.

justasking111 · 12/05/2024 07:27

I avoid petrol stations at the weekend always long queues.

People were in a jolly mood yesterday at the supermarket which was very busy, the salad and BBQ stuff was flying off the shelves, lots of sorry sold out gaps.

WaltzingWaters · 12/05/2024 07:27

Enjoy it whilst we have it. The weather has been miserable so this bit of sunshine is bliss.
And I mean, beers can be enjoyed in any weather.

Bjorkdidit · 12/05/2024 07:30

I'm sure exactly no-one is buying petrol they don't need, so if they're buying it, it's because there's insufficient in the tank for the driving they expect to do in the near future.

Plus they're limited by the capacity of their tank. It's not like they can buy hoarder levels of the stuff.

HelloDenise · 12/05/2024 07:33

Mercurial123 · 11/05/2024 11:51

You sound pretty miserable, OP.

Why do people trot this tired line out as if one post on AIBU defines a person's whole character? It's a question, it's simple. Not liking one thing doesn't make someone 'miserable'.

Auburngal · 12/05/2024 07:34

In the past on warm summer days, we run out of lettuces, bags of salad leaves.

We get moaned at. Customers say “you can’t have a salad without lettuce” I say dictionary definition is a dish of mainly cold vegetables and cooked vegetables served cold (like new potatoes). No mention of lettuce. Plus had salads/salad garnishes when been out and some didn’t have lettuce!

People need to understand that there’s more to food in the summer than salads and BBQs! A antipasti platter with some bread.

Thanks for that. Basing one statement then making a sweeping statement about how miserable the person is wrong.

Im genuinely a nice person but somethings and some people annoy me.

Wish hay fever wasn’t in my DNA.

swayingpalmtree · 12/05/2024 07:44

I mean, then so is labelling all people as "going mad" just because they dared to buy a fan and a few cases of beer on a warm day isnt it? OP made plenty of sweeping statements herself. She didnt just say "X annoys me", she made several sweeping statements herself...

bloodyplumbing · 12/05/2024 07:45

@HelloDenise why do people discuss people because they've bought three cases of beer or a paddling pool or a fan?

Based on their one visit to a store?

It's the same.

StarShipControl · 12/05/2024 07:49

Good for them. Some of those things are for temporary fun and the others will last all summer b

fieldsofbutterflies · 12/05/2024 07:52

My friends above get customers who say they don’t go shopping when it rains- when they drive! What’s that about?

Because shopping (especially with kids) when you're wearing damp coats and carrying umbrellas is nobody's idea of a good time?

I think plenty of people understand that! But if you’ve planned a meal involving lettuce, it’s natural to be mildly annoyed that there’s no lettuce in the shops. Pointless moaning at the staff though, not their fault and nothing they can do about it.

But why is ‘people go out and do stuff in nice weather’ an issue? People going out and buying things is good for the economy. It’s surely quite natural that people are more likely to buy a paddling pool for example in nice weather than in average weather?
