The way customers are buying paddling pools, BBQs, beers etc - they think it’s going to be this weather for 2 months. Could be thunderstorms for some tomorrow. Plus rain and mid teensC next ten days (Midlands)

Im sure people throw out electric fans after every summer.

I am with you OP.

My tesco delivery was 4 hours late because all the drivers called in 'sick' due to the nice weather. Made me grumpy as I had plans.

I can remember summers when the paddling pool was put up at the beginning of the warm weather, only emptied & moved if my dad wanted to cut the grass, it stayed up up to & through the six week holidays & used every day it was warm enough even if it was only after school. For some families who can't afford a holiday, having a paddling pool can keep children cool & occupied, it is better than them sitting inside on consoles, computers & phones.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/05/2024 22:49

I admit I saw a man carrying a giant air conditioner yesterday and I wondered how long he thought the nice weather was going to last. However the behaviour you described is human nature really.

The air con unit isn’t going to go off though, he can use it every time it’s hot! I nearly bought one in Costco today as my youngest DCs bedroom is like a furnace in the summer. Balked at £300 though.

Don't go on at me! I was only suggesting what the OP could've meant. Buying something you NEED obviously isn't going mad.

if you think someone politely disagreeing is "going on at you" you can't get out much!

But yes, very sorry, I should have interpreted that when you said "people go mad buying them every year" what you actually meant was "Buying something you NEED obviously isn't going mad." Confused

I'm not sure exactly how if you're in tesco and see people buying fans you can tell the difference between those who NEED them and the people just buying them for a giggle to ensure they sell out but there you go....

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 11/05/2024 23:16

Summer only happens for 1 or 2 days each year in Scotland so whenever it it does we need to make the most of it.

Who bought all the lettuce this morning, that's what I want to know. Two supermarkets sold out 😡

Riversideandrelax · 11/05/2024 23:18

It's been hot and sunny for over a week now so obviously people want to make the most of it! Fans and paddling pools break quite easily!

Well we do actually get quite a few sunny days from May to September in this country. So I'm pretty sure he will get enough use out of it. My flat is like a desert in the summer time.

I expect it was people like you wanting to buy lettuce? 🥬

Why- what makes you think that rather than them just putting them in the loft or in a cupboard until next summer?

Such a bizarre, random thing to think

Tbf I have occasionally wondered this. Every summer pretty much everywhere sells out of fans by June. Or so it seems. I need to replace a couple this year though. They don't last forever so... 🤷‍♀️

Polishedshoesalways · 12/05/2024 03:24

I think it’s pretty damn wonderful to see everyone look so happy. Sunlight and warm temperatures have boosted the National mood. Would you rather we all sit in the rain op?
We are swimming and having a BBQ tomorrow!

Polishedshoesalways · 12/05/2024 03:29

The forecast here has changed. 23c today and between 18-20c all of next week with plenty of sunshine! ☀️ so we must expect op to really lose her shit next week when ppl continue to buy summer stuff and insist on having a good time! ☀️

notedbiscuits · 12/05/2024 06:33

Im all for nice weather but don’t want to hear other people’s rubbish music booming out from 6 gardens away.

Plus there’re a few houses back of me during the hot hot days play very loud music and sing like cats screaming til 3am. Have zero consideration for those who need to get up early, the elderly, the unwell etc. Have contacted council and police about this - not interested. Even though these homes are breaking the law.

Ereyraa · 12/05/2024 06:38

Are you jealous because you were stuck working, selling all these things people are going to use to enjoy the lovely sunshine?

notedbiscuits · 12/05/2024 06:39

Remember not everyone loves sunny weather. It plays havoc with my hay fever and asthma. Wish I could enjoy being outside more.

Its was a maximum of 21c yesterday - certainly not warm enough for using paddling pools.

24 here yesterday, but despite that, 21 is plenty warm enough for a paddling pool.

It was 20 here plenty warm enough in our south facing garden for using paddling pools.

No. It’s the way people were buying 3 cases of beer like they don’t have anything at home!

I don’t work in retail but my friends who do said yesterday there were more people shopping than during an average British day.

Do the nice outdoor stuff when the weather is nice and do the indoor stuff when weather is rubbish.

My friends above get customers who say they don’t go shopping when it rains- when they drive! What’s that about?
