The way customers are buying paddling pools, BBQs, beers etc - they think it’s going to be this weather for 2 months. Could be thunderstorms for some tomorrow. Plus rain and mid teensC next ten days (Midlands)

Im sure people throw out electric fans after every summer.

I might have to buy a fan for my classroom. It will do fuck all, but it might alleviate some of the moaning and refusal to work because 'it's too hot'.

marshmallowfinder · 11/05/2024 17:46

alsuoo · 11/05/2024 11:58

The fact it might turn the next day is precisely why people go out and buy these things, to cease the moment whilst they can.

Surely you don't mean cease? Seize?

DivergentTris · 11/05/2024 17:57

OP you are not a fun sponge at all. I have loved this sunshine and managed it without going daft for all those things.

I used to see it when I had a fuel station, regular customers, filling cars regularly, they'd be in twice a week quite often apart from Christmas Eve, New years Eve, bank holidays and sunny weekends and we had queues down the road, and yes, most had not long since been into put a decent amount of fuel in their car just a day or so before and would be back again for a decent amount a day or so later. Some of them would run on fumes, yes, but not the amount we saw coming through.

Now in my job, we get an increase in alcohol-related incidents, domestic incidents, and violent/fight incidents when it's this sunny.

I think posters are seeing the lighter side of this in your OP but the sunshine does do strange things to people. You are not going daft, I have seen it in different ways.

Surely you can read the full thread before pouncing on someone’s error? Surely?

Well if they came back that means their tank cant be full can it? people travel a lot over Christmas, how on earth do you know what their fuel gauge was or how much they travelled- did you personally go and check it and ask them about how much fuel they used? People dont go to get fuel for fun- literally noone enjoys spending money on petrol, its because they need it for travelling

mondaytosunday · 11/05/2024 18:00

Really? Don't think people just throw away perfectly good things like fans.
Just got back from walking the dogs and it was done nice to see everyone enjoying the good weather. And you're right, it may all change but why be so miserable about it?

Define "daft"

According to OP its buying summer related things that may or may not be needed and having a BBQ...

Amongst all things that could be wrong with people that seems pretty low down on the scale.

I need to buy a paddling pool since the one I have officially is no longer...when would be the appropriate time to purchase one? Would this week be OK since we will hopefully need one for the rest of the summer or should I wait until winter?

When is it appropriate to have a BBQ? In the rain? Christmas? Or when the sun actually comes out?

strugglingmomx · 11/05/2024 18:08

It's literally May. We have up until September where we could have days / weeks of good weather. They're sensible to be buying them now so they have the whole summer to use them! You sound ridiculous.

LauderSyme · 11/05/2024 18:09

You are reminding me of a housemate I had once who would use opportune moments to chant

"Every party has it's pooper, that's why we invited you" 😁

I am always amazed when they tell us on the news how many billions of pounds a warm spell or a national event like the football added to our GDP. Imagine what these few days are doing for the economy!

Perpetualpotion · 11/05/2024 18:11

I don’t really see the issue.

More spending, all good for the economy. People positive, looking to have a nice time while we can.

Would you prefer people to just stay indoors and do nothing just because it might rain tomorrow?

ClareBlue · 11/05/2024 18:11

People work hard and meet all their responsibilities. A day with their children splashing in a paddling pool and a bit of outside socialising with their friends in the evening and you are having a go at them. I think it's a you problem.

KimberleyClark · 11/05/2024 18:12

I’ve just ordered some new garden furniture. Therefore it will piss down from tomorrow until September.

What absolute bloody nonsense. Sunshine doesnt cause domestic violence- alcohol abuse and men who have personality disorders do. If sunshine was the cause of violence then Spain, Greece and Italy would be a blood bath by now compared to the UK.

CountingCrones · 11/05/2024 18:19

OP, my region has just had the wettest 18 months since records began in the 1830s.

If that's not a reason to grab every moment of sunshiney joy out of these few days, I don't know what it.

Why do you think they were buying petrol
then if they didn’t need petrol?? Weird.

Moonlitwalk · 11/05/2024 12:45

I'm sure people throw out electric fans after every summer

Why- what makes you think that rather than them just putting them in the loft or in a cupboard until next summer?

Such a bizarre, random thing to think

Because people go mad buying them every year and they sell out. That's what the OP meant.

Youdontevengohere · 11/05/2024 18:31

I will need to buy a new fan shortly, because one of ours broke at the end of the summer last year and there was no point replacing it then. I doubt people are regularly chucking away working fans, it’s more that every year there will be a certain number of people who are having to replace broken fans/who have just moved into their first house and need to buy one etc.

MsLuxLisbon · 11/05/2024 18:34

Don't be such a Debbie Downer. It has been glorious today and we haven't had any decent weather for half a year. This summer is supposed to be a hot one, anyway, so I think you're being pessimistic for no reason.

marshmallowfinder · 11/05/2024 18:24

Well fans could be made to last longer than 2 or 3 years?

MaryFuckingFerguson · 11/05/2024 18:37

Twas ever thus.

Popped to the local co-op earlier and there were 2 shirtless and sunburnt scrotes in the queue in front of me.

As soon as we saw the forecast we immediately invited 8 friends to a barbecue tomorrow. Maybe we’re panicking that we’ll be back to winter next week.

HebburnPokemon · 11/05/2024 18:37

Sheeple

Lovinglife57 · 11/05/2024 18:40

What’s up with enjoying the lovely weather for the weekend 🙄

Conkersinautumn · 11/05/2024 18:41

I'm always surprised by how few.people get things repaired, or try to. This week I am waiting.for a new part to repair my dishwasher and the amount of "just get a new one" alarms me. Things are often not built brilliantly, but I try to repair things first. I suppose this is what fuels things like second hand cars and I should be glad though. I do need a new grill for the bbq though, no doubt you'll be thinking it's a seasonal whim. But I'm hardly going to add it to my Christmas shopping list (when I decided it really needed replacing before the next bbq). I can shop around at the moment.

TheVikingGirl · 11/05/2024 18:41

It’s been a long wet cold winter and start to spring who cares if it’s only 2 days! Seize the day I say!

Moonlitwalk · 11/05/2024 18:41

Well yes, because people arent going to buy fans when it's snowing are they- I mean thats obvious? That doesnt mean those people are throwing them in the bin every October, fans dont last a lifetime, I've bought many fans over the years and they all started to judder or go wonky after about 3-4 years so I had to buy new ones. I didnt throw them in the bin after only one season.
