To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

I’m with Nessa on BBQs

Are we talking
burgers and sausage in a long-life
bun, or are you takin' it serious?

I'm talkin' chicken breast, seafood, rib-eye
steaks, spare ribs, lamb kebabs.

What about side orders? Potato salad,
coleslaw. What you going to marinate?

😄

Was looking through to see if anyone had quoted Ness! She speaks the truth. You need some variety! Does DS not actually enjoy food? A couple of salads/coleslaw with the meat would be an absolute minimum for me.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 11/05/2024 14:25

That's rubbish.

Yes technically two hot dogs and two bread buns is enough calories to keep you going until tea, but it is the bare minimum of effort and pretty gross food.

napody · 11/05/2024 14:26

And if she had invited you round 'for hot dogs' and not promised a BBQ she'd STILL be unreasonable for no fried onions or mustard!

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/05/2024 14:27

Sorry I'd have to ask (later from the safety of the other end of the telephone)... 'WTF were you thinking?'...

BBQ's are a strange phenomenon where its acceptable (for most people) to have two or three times as much food as one would normally have - probably because of the waiting time between things being ready and how its spread out over several hours of grazing. So sausages, burgers, chicken, steak plus sides/salads/dessert.. and lots of bread.

If you're not doing that, why fucking bother! Particularly, why bother getting a BBQ out to heat up hot dog sausages that can be cooked on the hob in a pan!

lissie123 · 11/05/2024 14:27

Meh that’s crap. I don’t eat hotdogs. Not keen on burgers either. I’m more a halloumi or salmon kinda gal so I would have gone home starving. Can’t bear a dull BBQ. BBQs are supposed to be about eating outdoors celebrating the sunshine and sharing of food with friends and family.

Tomato Ketchup and bbq sauce were the sauce options, I'm glad that I asked as I would never want to come across ungrateful but I think we will carry on hosting from now on.

Do a barbecue with them as the only guests and serve the same paltry offering they gave you! They’ll be gutted if you’ve provided a good spread previously.

saturnspinkhoop · 11/05/2024 14:28

I went to a barbecue a long way away, so it was a lunchtime and most of the afternoon thing, and there was less food than that. Compared to what I had, I would have been pleased with 2 hotdogs.

When I do a barbecue, I do burgers, sausages, selection of sauces and the usual additions to go in the buns. There’s a big selection of kebabs, rice, corn on the cob, couscous, halloumi, crisps, assorted salads and more. That’s before we get to the desserts.

Blondiebeachbabe · 11/05/2024 14:31

At least it's more than we got when we went to FIL's house. Arrived after 10 hours travelling to no food in the house. Literally zilch. Went to bed hungry.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 11/05/2024 14:35

@Noed we always have at least one steak per person as well as hamburgers and lamb chops!! then salad, etc and all the trimmings!! I am not a big eater but even I would still be starving after just two hot dogs!!

Vastlyoverrated · 11/05/2024 14:38

I think the quantity is ok, but the variety not! As others have said, BBQs are usually about the meat, chicken, halloumi, salads and so I wouldn't want to eat two buns instead of more lovely meat and salad! No dessert, even just a cake to share, or ice creams in the sun, is also pretty mean!

Vastlyoverrated · 11/05/2024 14:39

I wouldn't be starving, but I would be disappointed.

Happilyobtuse · 11/05/2024 14:42

Personally I would never eat two hot dogs, one would be sufficient. Would have liked some salad and dessert though.

But if I am hosting I always have a lot of food for a barbecue as I am not going to police or judge other people and what they want to eat. Also a barbecue is a one off/treat/party so I would do a few different things like chicken wings, hot dogs, lamb chops, potato salad or fries, greek salad, pasta, garlic bread etc. and definitely lots of dessert options. I would never dream of asking my guests to bring their own drinks but would be happy to provide alcohol and alcohol free options for all. I believe if you are entertaining then do it properly otherwise don’t bother!

LadyLazlo · 11/05/2024 14:44

Yeah, this was incredibly lame on their part. I also know several people who have basically no sense of providing hospitality but are happy to receive it!

BreadInCaptivity · 11/05/2024 14:53

Technically it would be enough to fill me up but I'd think it was pretty boring fare to be offered.

Typically we offer 3/4 different salad dishes and a selection of BBQ food. I'm not that keen on burgers tbh so usually things like marinated chicken and/or fresh prawn skewers. Some veggie BBQ options if required. Some slow cooked pulled pork from the smoker or shredded lamb (with pomegranate). If veggie friends are coming the smoker does the meat and the small BBQ is reserved for vegetarian fare. Then some nice bread rolls/baguettes.

It's not about getting stuffed (though I live in fear of under catering) it's more that I think a good BBQ is about being able to have a variety of different things that all complement each other rather than just one thing and then people have a choice over what to eat.

goldenretrievermum5 · 10/05/2024 23:19

I will never understand the point in hosting friends/family if you aren’t going to do things ‘properly’ and have a nice spread of food, drinks etc so that everyone can actually enjoy themselves. 2 hotdogs is a joke

Same here. why bother?

Minniliscious · 11/05/2024 14:59

I see that the competitive under eaters are out in force today …..

shams05 · 11/05/2024 15:03

We normally do drumsticks, burgers and corn on the cob with salads, maybe a potato or pasta salad and if I'm really well prepared then lamb chops go on as well.
Fizzy drinks, juices for kids then ice creams.
Not everyone will have everything but it's good to have a choice of foods and I love making a sizzler with left overs.

THisbackwithavengeance · 11/05/2024 15:16

Agree it's a joke, poor form and downright rude.

I expect a choice of meats, salads and bread at a barbecue. Plus plenty of drink, snacks and dessert.

2 hotdogs!

It's pitiful.

im hosting 15 12 year olds for BBQ tonight. There is enough for 2 burgers ( and cheese and buns) and 2 sausages ( and buns) corn on the cob, skinny fries, salad and ice creams. With accompanying mocktails of course. I’ve also got a load of wine for any parents that fancy hanging out for a bit

your experience sounds shit. How disappointing, I can’t stand people who under cater!

MountCaramel · 11/05/2024 15:21

Next time you host tell her to bring her own drinks and then give her 2 hot dogs and buns to make it even.

I hate miserly cheeky fuckers lile this who are happy to take advantage of your hospitality & then don't reciprocate.

BananaLambo · 11/05/2024 15:22

I’d rather have one hot dog or burger, but also have coleslaw, corn on the cob and a salad. And at least strawberries and cream or a key lime pie for pudding - something fresh and fruity. If I was hosting I’d also make some Cajun sweet potato wedges and chuck them in the air fryer and have plenty of chilled wine and beer as a minimum.

sunglassesonthetable · 11/05/2024 15:26

Sounds about .5 out of 10. And the .5 is only because you had a choice of sauces.

They haven't got a clue.

tara66 · 11/05/2024 16:09

Doesn't she know hot dogs are highly processed ''food'' and should be avoided? Also white rolls of course.

Bansheed · 11/05/2024 16:30

Totally fucking outrageous. Very poor hostess form

FangsForTheMemory · 11/05/2024 16:34

I thought that the point of a barbecue was to eat a lot over a whole afternoon and get pissed? I should add, I avoid them because afternoon drinking gives me a headache.
