To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

I’m with Nessa on BBQs

Are we talking
burgers and sausage in a long-life
bun, or are you takin' it serious?

I'm talkin' chicken breast, seafood, rib-eye
steaks, spare ribs, lamb kebabs.

What about side orders? Potato salad,
coleslaw. What you going to marinate?

😄

This was my first thought too 😉

Even the MN sponsored advert thinks your SILs BBQ was shit!!

No thats not enough and why offer to host if you can't be bothered to put any effort in.
Me and my family were invited to a buffet kids party at a friends house.
Host said no need to bring anything and I have remembered you are vegetarian so there will be plenty for you.
She walked around with a platter of hot dogs in buns offering them out,she gets to me and says sorry this is all I made so nothing for you I'm afraid.
Why not message me and say bring your own sandwich.

Zanatdy · 11/05/2024 12:22

No, too little. I’d have done some salad too, and other meats, and desserts

Riversideandrelax · 11/05/2024 12:24

I'd expect a variety of salads alongside that and a dessert. Obviously, many people do lots more, but that is the basics.

XMissPlacedX · 11/05/2024 12:27

Does she not know bbq etiquette of the mandatory potato salad?

LondonFox · 11/05/2024 12:27

That is ok of your 10 y old is having bbq birthday. Even then I woyld put some crisps at least.
Bbq minimum is two choices of meat, salad and some type of snacks.
I would not serve just that for guests but it's like ok for Saturday family meal.

That's rubbish, I'm not keen on hotdogs so I'd be annoyed!

I'm beyond that. I can't bear hotdogs so I would be eating bare bread!

Justlovedogs · 11/05/2024 12:31

Too bland rather than not enough.
I'll do a bbq for dinner tonight. Burgers, sausages and chicken breast pieces, chopped mixed salad, new potatoes and burger baps. For two of us (and two dogs who are partial to the odd sausage!).

MonsteraMama · 11/05/2024 12:35

Two hotdogs and nothing else would be fine for an impromptu beachside disposable barbie situation where the food isn't really the main event.

An actual get together barbie at someone's house I'd expect sausages, burgers, chicken skewers, corn cobs on the grill as a minimum, with a few different side salads, sauce options, pickles and chutneys, crispy onions and snacks. I'd always provide soft drinks too and if people want booze they can bring some.

Serving two sausages and two buns with only ketchup or barbecue sauce is an absolute travesty.

Where's the salad, Doris?

(and also OP's sister)

XMissPlacedX · 11/05/2024 12:38
.

Doris as the salad clip

Luxell934 · 11/05/2024 12:44

That’s a really shit BBQ with guests.

At a minimum I’d expect burgers, hotdogs and salad bits.

daffodilandtulip · 11/05/2024 12:45

It's enough food for a meal, calorie wise. But a barbecue is a fun event for socialising, mooching about, chatting and nibbling for the afternoon. You'd be done and home within the hour with that!

UnctuousUnicorns · 11/05/2024 12:46

This is many moons ago now, but my parents and I (as a teenager) were once invited to some friends' (met through a shared hobby) house one Boxing Day afternoon, so around lunchtime, for a chat and "nibbles" - their words. We assumed there would be a bit of a buffet or similar, so didn't eat lunch beforehand. No. We stayed for two or three hours, and in that time were offered one teensy mince pie each. Nibbles indeed - two. Meanwhile, we watched their two teenaged sons scarf down doorstep turkey sandwiches. We left there bloody starving.

They were a well off family too, husband ran a successful business, big house etc. But they were odd. My mum once went round to their house one afternoon (at the wife's suggestion) after work. She (the wife) at some point heated some soup up and proceeded to eat it with some bread, followed by a couple of biscuits, all in front of my mum, while not once offering my mum anything to eat.

My mum said later that she wasn't bothered, just bemused. She would never have dreamt of having someone round to our house and not asking them if they wanted something to eat, and offering whatever we had in the house, even if it were just a cheese or ham sandwich or something. But like I said, some people are strange and downright rude .

BobbyBiscuits · 11/05/2024 12:51

I'd hope there would be several things on offer, sausages, burgers, veg kebabs, meat kebabs, maybe chicken legs...
Salad and bread and a couple of sauces.
Was that all they cooked or had the other stuff all ran out? I guess you know to bring some meat next time!

Willmafrockfit · 11/05/2024 12:53

where were the burgers?

midgetastic · 11/05/2024 13:08

I think your mum had outstayed her welcome

SomeOwlsCoo · 11/05/2024 13:13

Ugh. We've got a family BBQ coming up. My mum has already told my there's going to be 1 hotdog (sausage in a roll, not a frankfurter) and 1burger each. I think she's catering 2 hotdogs each for men. Plus potato salad, green salad and garlic bread.
I don't eat bread and can only tolerate a tiny amount of potato. So I've got a sausage, a burger with no bun and some lettuce leaves. I might be "sick" that day and stay at home.

MercyDulb0ttle · 11/05/2024 13:15

Crap.

burgers. Sausages. Halloumi. Chicken. Potato salad. Normal leafy salad. Maybe some skewery type thing. Perhaps some grilled sweetcorn and peppers. Yum. Oh and a pudding.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2024 13:20

In quantity, it would be enough to fill you up. In quality terms, it was dreadful. If we have a barbecue, say for 6 to 8, I serve:

Chicken
Chops
Home made burgers
Halloumi
Green salad
Tomato salad with mozzarella and black olives
Good French bread
A bean salad, possibly a pasta salad with some tuna

A couple of puddings

Lashings of wine and we're hosting so.provide it. Grateful of people bring some but it isn't a prerequisite.

If there are more people I increase the quantities.

Meltingchocolate · 11/05/2024 13:21

That’s pathetic. I would be very disappointed.

Meltingchocolate · 11/05/2024 13:23

Some people are weird. Some people are not into food at all and they are always rubbish hosts. Like pps said, they always fill up in other people’s houses though.

Zwicky · 11/05/2024 13:28

It’s rubbish. Enough food, technically, but rubbish. Like inviting someone for Sunday dinner and giving them 2 slices of meat and a dollop of smash. I’ll sometimes barbecue just some sausages with buns or some chicken wings with sweet potatoes just me and the dc, the same way I might just make egg and chips for me and the dc but if you are inviting people for food, the food should be good.
