To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

I don’t think I’ve ever been at a BBQ where sausages are the ONLY option. Even a pretty shit BBQ you’re offered a burger and/or a sausage. And some sweaty pasta salad or coleslaw/potato salad.

How odd.

Disturbia81 · 11/05/2024 13:30

Nah that's a shit bbq.

Blanketpolicy · 11/05/2024 13:49

Don't think I have ever been to a BBQ without asking the hosts what they had and what we were to bring, it's always been a shared effort with any family and friends we know. They provide the venue, the lit BBQ, some basic food - sausages/burgers/buns/sauces and do the cleaning up, everyone else contributes to the food so everyone gets a good mix of meat options, sides or desserts.

We usually make up and take chicken/pepper kebabs (1-2 kebabs per person going) and if they didn't had salad/pita we would pick up a few packs on way.

Taking you own drink is also the norm.

Cheap skates. I have never been to a bbq where there isn't plenty of salad (I dodge it like that Great Uncle who just loves to talk about his collection of envelopes). I think they expected you to bring stuff even though they said no.

We recently had my wife's family from South Africa, I did a buffet and was still eating it for breakfast 3 days later!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/05/2024 13:51

It’s really pretty rubbish! It’s not so much the amount of food as an acceptable amount to eat (say if you were at home), but that there’s no choice and it’s hotdogs and/ or nothing. It’s pretty poor hosting!

KarenSmithsWeatherBoobs · 11/05/2024 13:54

Two hot dogs would fill be us, but it's not exactly exciting. At least throw in a burger is you're not into more than basic bbq food.

However, people do tend to overeat at a bbq just because it's a bbq. The same food cooked indoors on a rainy Wednesday in January for tea, and a much smaller portion would be more than adequate.

NeverHeardOfSuchTosh · 11/05/2024 13:57

That's not a BBQ! I always do far too much food, but I'd have expected burgers (home-made), fried onions, salad, potato salad, perhaps jacket potatoes or chips, and some type of dessert (ice lollies at the very least), at the minimum.

Ifyoucouldreadmymindlove · 11/05/2024 14:05

That’s enough food for me, I’d be stuffed, but it’s boring. I’d rather be able to choose some chicken or a burger, salads and potatoes and corn and dips and things that actually taste of something.

Hopingtobe4 · 11/05/2024 14:06

Oh sounds awful. Bbqs are all about the skewers and sides.

Starzinsky · 11/05/2024 14:08

She catered like she couldn't care less about her guests. I don't know how some people can be so miserable.

TheAceWoman · 10/05/2024 23:52

I wouldn't turn up to a BBQ without some food to contribute to it even if the host said they had enough and I wouldn't even contemplate going without bringing some wine or beer.

Don't come to my house then, if I'm hosting I provide the food. I'm not cooking your stuff.

You are free to bring beer and wine though

bloodyplumbing · 11/05/2024 14:12

PotatoPudding · 11/05/2024 11:56

One sausage in a bun is ample but I would expect some salad to go with it.

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/05/2024 14:13

When I do a bbq it's not bits I'll do a brisket, joint of meat, pork tenderloins and always something veggie with the accompanying burns to go with it. A couple of hot dogs is crap.

TokyoSushi · 11/05/2024 14:14

That's weird, we're having a bbq later just me, DH and the DC, we're having steak, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, halloumi, 'a big salad' & new potatoes! 🐷

Anonymouseposter · 11/05/2024 14:15

Well I'm not exactly the hostess with the mostest or a great cook but at least I would have added some salads and dips and a desert. I don't suppose you would starve but it sounds worse than basic. Very boring food, and what if anyone doesn't like hotdogs?

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 11/05/2024 14:16

It’s enough food in terms of volume, but terrible hosting.

Some people seem to think that a BBQ begins and ends with sausages. I wouldn’t even necessarily include them if I was hosting a BBQ, I would go for more interesting offerings. Just like I wouldn’t serve ordinary sausage and mash for a dinner party.

I guess your DSis thinks a BBQ is about socialising outside, but if food… but not a culinary event.

Loloj · 11/05/2024 14:16

Shit bbq and bad hosting!

FiveShelties · 11/05/2024 14:17

That does not sound like any BBQ I have been to.

Moier · 11/05/2024 14:18

Hot dogs don't go on a BBq they are heated in water.
That's shit.
Where is the burgers? Chicken wings? Normal sausages.
Corn on cob?
Bowls of salad/ potato salad/ coleslaw etc?
Deserts?
I'd be still hungry.
That's not a BBQ That's a snack.
I'd say " now we have had starters ..what's for main "?

EmilyBronte82 · 11/05/2024 14:19

My MiL’s BBQs are amazing
sausage
burger
chicken leg
fillet steak!!
skewered kebabs
french bread
garlic bread
buns
salad
coleslaw
potato salad

Pimms

usually a fruit berry salad for dessert.

can’t wait for her first one of the summer!

bloodyplumbing · 11/05/2024 14:19

Is if she'd have done a massive MN salad...... 🥗 shrug

OnehundredStars · 11/05/2024 14:20

I can’t believe you had to bring the drinks too 😂😂😂 they are selfish

Epidote · 11/05/2024 14:20

Get the BBQ out and make the fire just for sausages seems pointless for me.
I'm on the group of a bit of everything, including salad dishes and desert. Too much food, of course, but is the best of a BBQ. The variety of multiple choices cooked on the fire on a day out.
On quantity yes it is fine, but I would call it grilled hot dogs day no BBQ day.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/05/2024 14:22

@longdistanceclaraclara

’something veggie with the accompanying burns to go with it. ‘

I think that is the best typo I have read this year.

Sounds like the prize you get when you finish IKEA.
