To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

That's a sad BBQ. My default would be burgers, chicken good quality sausages and something like halloumi for the vegetarians, then home made garlic bread and a big salad, possibly a potato salad as well. Dessert options would be ice cream, fresh fruit salad, cake.

Allwelcone · 11/05/2024 16:38

Some people don't like food! My DH loves it (sadly) so for example at our bbq tomorrow, MIL is coming, there's

  • sausages
  • marinated lamb,
  • sea bass,
  • taramasalta houmous, pitta bread,
  • tsatziki
  • potatoamnd green salads and
  • a homemade raspberry cheesecake.

MIL hates cooking otoh and would give us a very small ready meal at hers.

Tomorrow we will be mainly watching him eat.

Nightblindness · 11/05/2024 16:38

We've just had a bbq (just my family). I bought way too much meat so we only cooked a burger and a long sausage each, both with buns, and had potato salad, coleslaw, half a corn on the cob each, bbq-ed red pepper, mixed salad (leaves, tomatoes, red pepper, cucumber, avocado, red onion) and all the usual salad dressings and relishes. I also had meringues, cream, strawberries and raspberry coulis for pud but noone had room for pud!

I think 2 meat items each is fine, but that is based on all the sides and a pud to follow.

Beautiful3 · 11/05/2024 16:43

I'd prefer burgers and sides e.g. coleslaw, potato salad, salad etc.

Moveoverdarlin · 11/05/2024 16:43

If I moved to a new house I’d want to go to town and show off, I’d pull out the stops.

Boomer55 · 11/05/2024 16:44

I don’t eat a lot, but if I have ever hosted, I’ve made sure I’ve had more food, rather than less, that is needed.

Watchthedoormat · 11/05/2024 16:46

Sounds a rubbish bbq.
Are you sure she didn't have salads and sides indoors?

HumerousHumous · 11/05/2024 16:47

SomeOwlsCoo · 11/05/2024 13:13

Ugh. We've got a family BBQ coming up. My mum has already told my there's going to be 1 hotdog (sausage in a roll, not a frankfurter) and 1burger each. I think she's catering 2 hotdogs each for men. Plus potato salad, green salad and garlic bread.
I don't eat bread and can only tolerate a tiny amount of potato. So I've got a sausage, a burger with no bun and some lettuce leaves. I might be "sick" that day and stay at home.

2 hotdogs each for the men
THAT would utterly piss me off. What's that about? Because they're MEN they get double portions?! Not the first time I've heard of this - or seen it happen. I'd be having words with your DM.

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/05/2024 16:49

It's probably enough in terms of volume, but I'd be surprised and disappointed at the lack of any extras, like salad stuffs etc.

It sounds so basic and joyless.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 11/05/2024 16:51

It’s fine as the main component (if unimaginative), but no salads?

I couldn’t eat 2 hotdogs. I’d rather have one and sides.

We’re hosting a barbecue tomorrow and we’re cooking sausages, chicken satay, ribs and kebabs plus rice salad, hot potato salad, creamed corn, caprese and a green salad.

CharSiu · 11/05/2024 16:51

I like hosting and no one has ever left my house hungry but I’m Chinese it’s very cultural and everyone is offered food, even an unexpected visitor.

The last BBQ I did had burgers, hot dogs, salmon and chicken on skewers and home made coleslaw, and potato salad. I bake bananas on the BBQ with rum or chocolate plus always ice cream in cones.

PonyPatter44 · 11/05/2024 16:52

I'd be embarrassed to serve that up to guests at a bbq, quite honestly. Bbqs are for interesting meats and seafood, served generously, with lots of salads and plenty of drink!

Hayliebells · 11/05/2024 16:52

What even was the point?

badatdecisions · 11/05/2024 16:53

We are doing a BBQ today before Eurovision, each person can have any/all of: 2 quarter pounders (veggie or meat), 2 hot dogs (chilli or regular, veggie or not), vegetable skewer, chicken kebab skewer, baked potato, potato salad, regular salad, coleslaw.

Obviously don't expect everyone to eat all that, it's just to cover the numbers for people who will have 2 burgers and nothing else or whatever.

Dessert is salted caramel ice cream with flake.

Snacks are chilli rice crackers, nuts, tortilla chips, dips.

If our friends who are Jewish and gluten free are coming we also do salmon and new potatoes (their request) on a separate BBQ.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 11/05/2024 16:53

PotatoPudding · 11/05/2024 11:56

One sausage in a bun is ample but I would expect some salad to go with it.

Is it fuck. Grin the Competitive Under Eaters Klaxon has gone off I see.

Minimum of 3 meats for me at a decent BBQ. Plus the sides. And a Magnum or cheesecake for pudding, thanks.

Boogiemam · 11/05/2024 12:16

Even the MN sponsored advert thinks your SILs BBQ was shit!!

I was about to mention this!!! I saw it as well, after about the first five comments, and thought, “Wow, now that is some on-point visual advertising right there.” As if the ad was saying, ‘Your DS had a BBQ that wasn’t for shit, but here’s what it SHOULD have looked like. Love, MNHQ.’ So apparently they don’t think you’re being unreasonable, @Noed

ILikePistachios · 11/05/2024 16:54

Sounds absolutely shit, a BBQ should have burgers, sausages, chicken kebabs or some other type of chicken choice, potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, a decent selection of sauces/toppings like chutneys, salad dressings & sauces.

Optional extras should be a decent drink selection, ice selection and a couple of dessert choices.

Now I want to host a BBQ

RiceCrispyCakes · 11/05/2024 16:56

Jesus we had what we consider a small last minute bbq today, large sausages, cheeseburgers with cheesy coleslaw a side salad and spicy pork belly.
It was absolutely delicious and we were satisfied with a small amount of leftovers.
2 hotdogs in buns is totally shit.

NeedToChangeName · 11/05/2024 16:57

TheAceWoman · 10/05/2024 23:52

I wouldn't turn up to a BBQ without some food to contribute to it even if the host said they had enough and I wouldn't even contemplate going without bringing some wine or beer.

@TheAceWoman I'm sure you mean well, but this would irritate me. If I've prepared food for guests, I don't want them rocking up with their own

Susuwatariandkodama · 11/05/2024 16:59

You definitely want a variety of food at a bbq, we almost most do a buffet of snacks, salad, sides and meat etc, just cooking sausages is rubbish!

Allwelcone · 11/05/2024 16:59

Do you think they are trying to prove a point?
I had a friend who went through a stage like this, inviting people to lunch and feeding them Ryvita or whatever, when others would make more effort with homemade soups and breads etc.

She invited us to a Sunday lunch. Mortified as it turned out to be more lunch-on-a-Sunday.
We (us and 3 teen/pre teens) were all geared up for a roast, I can't remember the details but it was lite lite lite and featured granola for pudding!

I think she was trying to prove a point, they're religious if maybe that's something, against profligacy maybe?

steff13 · 11/05/2024 16:59

I'm in the US and my experience with barbecues is that people typically show up around 5:00 p.m. and stay until 8:00, 9:00 sometimes even later at night just hanging out talking playing games etc. Two hot dogs per person across that period of time is certainly not going to be sufficient. It would be typical to have burgers, hot dogs, sausages, and then a variety of salads, chips, and desserts.

Calamitycassie · 11/05/2024 16:59

lol.

Reminds me. I do burgers, various forms of chicken, sausages, racks of ribs, salmon, prawns, rice and peas, various other forms of carbs, salads. Provide kegs of beer, bottles, cocktails, shorts etc. no one even bothers to bring a bottle of juice (looking at DPs family here, at least my family half arse offer) I also put on some form of entertainment for the kids like bouncy castle or whatever and entertain the adults. Most fill their boots and leave.

Dps cousin (worst culprit for filling her boots and leaving) has just “hosted” a bbq for the family and we didn’t even get an invite 😂 she’s been to every one of ours and we do them multiple times per year. I believe the bbq consisted of a sandwich and a slice of cake. She’s not hard up at all.

catlady7 · 11/05/2024 17:02

That's a bit shit. Definitely wouldn't fill me up

Notreat · 11/05/2024 17:04

I would want some salads and extras corn on the cob etc. I'm not a huge meat eater and always prefer the extras. I wouldn't want two hotdogs!
Is your sister not used to hosting and just didn't think?
