To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

Who barbecues hot dogs?? A decent bbq is: burgers, chicken or steak, meat and veg sausages, haloumi and veg skewers, corn on the cob. Then salad, dips and sauces, buns and maybe some tortilla chips/crisps. YANBU at all.

They mean sausages cooked on BBQ served in a hotdog bun. Isnt that obvious? What would you call a sausage in a finger bun?

fuckssaaaaake · 12/05/2024 21:46

That would be my stater

They do say the more you have the tighter they are & your Ds is obviously tighter than a ducks arse.
Next time you host tell them to bring their own drinks then give them the so mini burgers in mini buns if they say anything tell them your just returning what you received😂😂😂 tight beggers

Not the point, but I don’t think ducks have tight arses do they? It all kind of dribbles out even when they are waddling along. A tight arse would fire it some distance.

MiniPumpkin · 12/05/2024 22:40

Not even a wee bit of salad ? I’d be annoyed at that too (and hungry)

I would call that a sausage sandwich. A hot dog is a frankfurter (and they're much better grilled than boiled) Smile.

And sibling rivalry never ends.

So what was so great about your bbq's?

Because trust me, if you put on a spread, it's noticed.

My husband may do the cooking at a bbq. Good for him.

But we all know my range of salads, marinated foods, breads, olives, side dishes, makes the day, and also makes my day, because it was all made the day before, and I am chilling and chatting with guests.

It's not that I wake up with nothing to do. It's just I wake up without stress, because I know guests will be fed even if the bbq spontaneously combusts.

So where in your sister's universe is it acceptable that 2 hotdogs make a bbq?

Because if you're all just serving up the basics, it seems the most important part is an excuse for the family getting together. So why are you bitching about the food??? The family all got together.

pineapplesundae · 12/05/2024 23:01

You serve more than that at a children’s party.

DailyCake · 12/05/2024 23:14

I'm just going to address the hotdog issue as we host an annual family hot dog lunch. Each person assembles their own hot dog and one or two of the adult men have been known to have two!

Ingredients:
extra large/long frankfurters from Costco, boiled
half baguettes, warmed in oven
butter
mayo
fried onion rings
shredded lettuce
thin cucumber slices seasoned with lime juice and salt
sliced tomatoes
sliced pickles
ketchup
mustard
piccalilli
jalapeños
roast red pepper chutney
hot pepper sauce

I’ve sorted the ‘menu’ for our bbq next week, most are vegetarians and I’ve warned the non-veggies attending that there won’t be any meat.

Veg skewers (peppers, mushrooms, courgette and cooked taro) various marinades and some plain ones.
bhutta (essentially south asian style corn on the cob)
Paneer tikka skewers and some tofu ones.
Aloo patties (i guess a but like a south asian rosti)
veggie burgers and hotdogs for those who prefer that
Various pakora
smoked egg biryani balls (a bit like arancini)
potato salad
leaf salad
bought bread buns
roti
dipping sauces
dessert will be cups of phirni with bbq/caramelised fruits like mango

So not steak etc, but there will be enough so that a guest doesn’t have to limit what they take, especially if they find there are only say two things they like.

I'm a dyed in the wool meat eater, and this sounds amazing. There's another thread going re a veggie/vegan bbq and I'm.sure the poster would love this.

We got invited to a birthday tea at my bil house, we too do a great spread when we host. When we got there his wife said oh we couldn’t be arsed have a breakfast bar and she produced a large bowl with various breakfast bars in- that was it no cake no sausage nothing 🤣

Tomato Ketchup and bbq sauce were the sauce options, I'm glad that I asked as I would never want to come across ungrateful but I think we will carry on hosting from now on.

Yeah, I would, as well. While it is certainly enough food for most adults, it's also about a boring as it could get. I'd far, far rather have one hot dog and a choice of sides.

Toptops · 12/05/2024 23:51

Boring BBQ!

I’m with Nessa on BBQs

Are we talking
burgers and sausage in a long-life
bun, or are you takin' it serious?

I'm talkin' chicken breast, seafood, rib-eye
steaks, spare ribs, lamb kebabs.

What about side orders? Potato salad,
coleslaw. What you going to marinate?

😄

🤣🤣

I don’t. 😕 There would be dessert . But lots of kids parties are pizza or hot dog parties.

anon4net · 13/05/2024 03:16

I'd only ever eat one hotdog but would absolutely enjoy sides with it - salad, maybe fruit or dessert etc.

Do they have form for being tight?

pollymere · 13/05/2024 09:11

I'd probably only want one hot dog for health reasons and expect to fill up on salad. And no dessert is just rude.

I'm perfectly capable of eating a burger, a hot dog, chicken, pepper kebab, salad and dessert at a BBQ! And coleslaw. And maybe some tortilla crisps and dip...

Ukrainebaby23 · 13/05/2024 09:56

MrsBungle · 10/05/2024 23:19

It needs salad at the very least! Poor show.

And a dessert

I'm not being funny but when someone is talking about BBQ in the UK a hot dog would usually be a sausage cooked on a BbQ not a frankfurter

It's a hot dog. It's always been a hot dog. You never hand someone a sausage in a finger role if they've asked for a sausage sandwich

Hot dog refers to the contents of the bread roll, not the bread roll itself.

My mother also calls regular sausages in a long roll 'hot dogs', but that's because she's an appalling snob who wouldn't entertain the idea of having something so common as a frankfurter in the house. I like a bratwurst, myself 😊

PostalPanic · 13/05/2024 11:50

Portion size is fine, but you're not a 7 year old at cub camp! Who eats buns any more? Or even hot dogs for that matter? Unless they were some sort of fancy artisan version, made from hand-reared pigs grazing on the village common?!

I ate four (the ones in a jar, so not fancy) watching Eurovision on Saturday 😀

sunglassesonthetable · 13/05/2024 12:08

I associate hot dogs as the kind of food kids get given after a soft play party. Cheap filler basically.

I'm sure some people like them and each to their own but you know.... BBQ????

Nah.

AhBiscuits · 13/05/2024 13:07

I have never been served a frankfurter at a BBQ. It's always standard pork sausages in a finger roll and referred to as a hotdog.

VeneziaJ · 13/05/2024 13:12

Thats rubbish. We do a burger and a hot dog for everyone; corn on the cob, roasted peppers, vegetable skewers, and a jacket potato. There is also coleslaw, salad and a pud and lots of crisps in bowls in case anyone is peckish waiting!
