To think that this portion for an adult is too little?

Family bbq, we usually host but my sister has moved and wanted to host at her house instead.
Myself and DH love hosting and make sure that there are plenty of snacks, food and drink for everyone.
DS said that we had to bring our own drink which is absolutely fine with me as I know that can be very costly to cater for everyone, I offered to bring a dish but she said that they had food sorted out.
Just to clarify my DS has no money worries as her and her DH both have well paying jobs so I was surprised to be served 2 hotdogs and that was it. 2 sausages and 2 buns each, nothing more. No dessert, snacks or anything other than that.
Would you think this is an acceptable bbq and portion per person?

2 sausages and 2 buns - well it would be enough calories but

I'd add salad , and a pudding for an event like a BBQ

WiloTheWisp · 11/05/2024 11:33

Might have been on purpose so she doesn’t have to do it again but can say she’s hosted..

OpusGiemuJavlo · 11/05/2024 11:24

That's a really terrible bbq.

A decent bbq needs both bigger variety and more individual items, providing enough that you can be confident that there will definitely be leftovers once everyone is stuffed to the gills.

I disagree there - we need to move away from "stuffed to the gills" and leftovers ( which are often wasted / gone off if been left out in the heat )

lljkk · 11/05/2024 11:34

No butter spread? No garnish? No tomato sauce?
That sounds really weird, and very very dry. Stodgy.

What sort of drinks were there, just weak beers & water, maybe?

tulippa · 11/05/2024 11:35

Who barbecues hot dogs?? A decent bbq is: burgers, chicken or steak, meat and veg sausages, haloumi and veg skewers, corn on the cob. Then salad, dips and sauces, buns and maybe some tortilla chips/crisps. YANBU at all.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/05/2024 11:36

If you’re hosting a meal then I think the expectation is always that your provide more food than is needed, enough that the guests feel indulged and that there was the option for more if they wanted it. 2 hotdogs is possibly enough food for a meal if you are making dinner on a normal weekday (Although even then I’d still expect some salad or corn on the cobs or something as a side!) but hosting a barbecue you should be serving more than a minimal portion! I would have expected snacks/ nibbles and a dessert alongside the barbecue and would expect at least two main options (so burgers as well as sausages for example) and sides/ toppings etc too.

SocksAndTheCity · 11/05/2024 11:36

Well you and whoever else 'we' concerns can move wherever you choose, @midgetastic . The rest of us will eat as much as we like and enjoy our leftovers Smile

EnjoyingTheSilence · 11/05/2024 11:37

That’s like going for a Sunday toast and just getting the meat!

Wheres the salads? Where’s the garnishes? Where’s the chips and dips? Where’s the deserts?

They obviously don’t host and don’t really want to do it again!

Ponoka7 · 11/05/2024 11:38

If that had happened between my DD's they'd be asking if everything was ok. Perhaps your BIL has refused to contribute and the move has been costly? Either way, it doesn't sound as though they were willing hosts.

You don't generally have a bbq or host guests every day though. It's a bit miserable to treat it as a normal dinner so everyone should have 'just enough'.

DoublePeonies · 11/05/2024 11:42

It's a perfectly adequate amount of food - you aren't going to starve. Plus a bit of salad, it's a weekend lunch for us
But it's not exactly a party platter, and I'd be a bit disappointed. Some salads, some deserts, and maybe mixing it up half hotdogs, half burgers, and it's a much better feast.

PeppermintParty · 11/05/2024 11:48

Noed · 11/05/2024 11:27

Tomato Ketchup and bbq sauce were the sauce options, I'm glad that I asked as I would never want to come across ungrateful but I think we will carry on hosting from now on.

I agree that whilst you won't starve, it's not what you expect at a barbeque.

But I personally wouldn't offer to host every time. Let your DS host from time to time, but make sure you know to eat before you leave home and then you can just treat it as a snack.

If you and DS alternate with the hosting, the other guests/family who attend both will no doubt compare the two and you can bask in their praise.

I’m with Nessa on BBQs

Are we talking
burgers and sausage in a long-life
bun, or are you takin' it serious?

I'm talkin' chicken breast, seafood, rib-eye
steaks, spare ribs, lamb kebabs.

What about side orders? Potato salad,
coleslaw. What you going to marinate?

😄

MrsClatterbuck · 11/05/2024 11:51

I'm having a Bbq tonight. We are having sirloin steaks bought a while ago and in freezer but not massive sausages and lamb kebabs. Served with garlic bread or Jersey Royals or both. Salad, coleslaw, potato salad and a cous cous salad thank you M & S chutneys
Not a maker of desserts but maybe have a selection of magnums. Wine cider and soft drinks.
Oh forgot the mushrooms and pepper sauce
Plus we're there any onions with the hotdogs because not proper hotdogs without them.
Dh would be stopping at the chippy or Chinese on the way home especially as we would have had very little to eat that day in anticipation of getting a decent amount of food later.
I would invite them over and do the same and see their reaction. Say you are cutting down and was impressed by their restraint.
Bet they eat plenty at your BBQs

NoOneFellOffTheirChair · 11/05/2024 11:51

It’s not worth pratting about getting the BBQ up and running, just to do that. Sounds rubbish

Simonjt · 11/05/2024 11:54

My mum went to a similar bbq last year, you could either have one hotdog with ketchup, or one burger with cheese or tomato sauce (not both!), they’re a group who have been friends for years and it was the first time the particular frienf had hosted. My mum was hosting the following week, so rather than her usual bbq she offered them exactly the same thing, they then complained to their other shared friends that mums bbq was rubbish and she is far too tight to be inviting guests over 🤣

That's a really terrible bbq.

A decent bbq needs both bigger variety and more individual items, providing enough that you can be confident that there will definitely be leftovers once everyone is stuffed to the gills.

A decent barbecue is where more food can be cooked freshly if needed. If not , the host can freeze it to use later.

I'd be off the nearest co-op or corner shop if I was still hungry

PotatoPudding · 11/05/2024 11:56

One sausage in a bun is ample but I would expect some salad to go with it.

Danioyellow · 11/05/2024 11:57

I wouldn’t even serve that to my kids. They were begging for a bbq last weekend when I was absolutely skint. Even I managed to get a bbq pack from Iceland for a tenner (8 burgers, 8 sausages and I think 12 chicken drumsticks). I got a rolls, a pack of tomato pasta, coleslaw, cheese slices and a made my own egg potato salad and a salad. Cost me under £20 and it fed 5 for us for 2 days, the dogs had some too. Your sisters tight as fuck

Danioyellow · 11/05/2024 11:59

Oh and I did some Caribbean rice as a side too. Knew there was something else!

CrushingOnRubies · 11/05/2024 12:00

Yanbu

I'd need some sort of greenery/ veg at least

And no pud at a bbq is a travesty

Ample? 1 sausage? For a 4 year old, maybe.

mitogoshi · 11/05/2024 12:10

No that's mean. I'd expect chicken, 2-3 salads, a burger and a hot dog ideally, and hopefully bbq veggie kebabs.

mitogoshi · 11/05/2024 12:11

@PotatoPudding

Ample for a light lunch maybe, not dinner and depends a lot on size.

Riverlee · 11/05/2024 12:12

Two hotdogs on their own is mean. If you’re hosting a barbecue, you provide salads, crisps, choice of meat, desserts etc.

I would probably only eat two hotdogs, but with the extra as well.
