To think you can't put a toilet outside someone's bedroom?

House on the left is having work done.

House on the right has no involvement in the work.

AIBU to think you can't just put a random portaloo above someone's front door and outside their bedroom window?

It’s against the op’s house and over her front door. You cannot erect scaffolding against someone’s house without permission, unless it’s to carry out essential emergency work to ensure the structural integrity of the building. You certainly can’t erect scaffolding against someones’s house for the express reason of housing a portaloo.

It’s free standing on public land ,not touching anything and not restricting access no you don’t

if it was private land or attached then you would

it’s a terrible option it must of been as a last resort I’ve never see. Any thing like it

I’d to site manager ask for it to be move on the part directly in front of the house there working on and store it on the other bit when they need it out of the way to work where it is in front of the house they are working on

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/05/2024 11:26

Is there any more news OP.

This is preying on my mind!

SapphosRock · 11/05/2024 12:30

Sorry didn't realise the thread had so many replies.

Neighbour to the right asked the builders if they can move it but they refused.

Neighbours to the left appear to be away and uncontactable.

Any idea what the neighbour to the right plan to do next.
Write to their MP?
contact planning or building control?
or highways?

Health and safety exec at the council ?

Mummapenguin20 · 11/05/2024 12:34

Surley they are not allowed to do that

Hadalifeonce · 11/05/2024 12:36

If it was my house I would contact the portaloo company and tell them it needs to be moved.
Assuming it has been hired from somewhere.

Locating a portaloo isn’t up to the company it’s up to the builders.
As long as it can be emptied it’s not their concern or responsibility

rwalker · 11/05/2024 12:40

everything else a side can’t see the reason it has to be that far over
it could be moved near to the house being worked not ideal but a reasonable compromise

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 11/05/2024 12:42

What about reporting this to the Council environmental department.
They deal with problems such as
public toilets
smell
antisocial behaviour

If neighbour to the right reports the smell of the toilet then they would normally write to the builders and ask them to remove it.

This is what happens with other stuff such as rubbish in gardens etc

Fluffypuppy1 · 11/05/2024 14:28

They should definitely contact the local council. Building control or health and safety. Preferably both if they want something done quickly. Local MP may be able to help too.

lighten up It was a joke.

Oh! Huh. Really rare for me to miss when someone’s joking.

Allshallbewell2021 · 11/05/2024 15:05

This is a stock photo from some scaffolding in St James's London. It's clearly something that's considered acceptable by building companies.

It's the lack of sought permission which is blowing my mind.

It's irritating me a lot.

The thing that makes me feel it will be hard to tackle is the thought of how much effort and work it must take to manoeuvre a portacrapper into that position. There's no way they didn't think about it at all; that's some effort.

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/05/2024 15:23

Some portaloos have a clasp hole and you can put a padlock on it, I’d be padlocking that fucker this evening.

And builder with there selection of readily available tools would have that off in no time

also don’t venture onto the scaffolding to do this

Of course it matters. They bloody stink, especially in warmer weather!

If it was outside your bedroom window you would absolutely not be so laid back about it.

I had one outside the house when i had work done.

DIdn't bother me in the slightest and it really didn't smell as much as some people on here are making out. Barely noticed it, in fact.

Personally, if it was only going to be a short period of time I would just let it be.

68User · 11/05/2024 19:06

The scaffolding should not be on your property without permission so I’d get that removed immediately. I guess the portaloo can be anywhere on their property. Unbelievably rude and cheeky!

Straycats · 11/05/2024 19:21

I’d be tempted to glue the lock mechanism, they’d have to order a new one!

Edited

So, you had one outside your own house whilst you did work on it. Hardly the same as installing one outside your neighbour's bedroom window is it?

Nightjar33 · 11/05/2024 19:29

Is this a joke it looks that way.
Theres no way a portaloo can be emptied in that position 🤣

8misskitty8 · 11/05/2024 19:31

can you reach it from a window ?
Be a shame if you were washing your windows and it was ‘accidentally’ bumped and it fell off.

I wish it was a joke!!

Good to know they are being U anyway. The builders were so nonchalant about it i had to check on here.

PeachyPeachTrees · 11/05/2024 20:37

Absolutely no way I'd be putting up with a stinky portaloo right outside my window. I'd also be getting the scaffolding over the front door removed too.
