To think you can't put a toilet outside someone's bedroom?

House on the left is having work done.

House on the right has no involvement in the work.

AIBU to think you can't just put a random portaloo above someone's front door and outside their bedroom window?

That would surely be an environmental health issue. I’d give them a ring too.

KeepYourFingersOutOfMySoup · 10/05/2024 14:41

That's outrageous op! I hope you get it sorted quickly!

Do you know your neighbours? I take it they are not in while the work is happening? Have you spoken to the builders directly? I might be tempted to watch and wait until one heads to the loo then open the window and tell them to move it. Or if no luck just lean out of the window whack the loo with something heavy and noisy randomly, and constantly when it is occupied 😆 (I probably wouldn't actually do this but would think about it!).

Magnastorm · 10/05/2024 14:43

If they have permission to put the scaffolding up where it is, having a portaloo there wouldn't really bother me all that much, to be honest.

They could probably shift it forward a foot so it can't be seen, but really, assuming it's only a temporary thing does it really matter?

ZipZapZoom · 10/05/2024 14:44

ILikePistachios · 10/05/2024 14:23

I wouldn't have an issue with it, it's only temporary and people need to poop.

I refuse to believe you wouldn't have an issue with a porta loo being placed outside your bedroom window when the work wasn't even for your property. No one is that much of a doormat surely?

LatteLady · 10/05/2024 14:44

This is an environmental health issue, I think you will find that they will send someone PDQ... I hope for the builders' sakes that they all have hard hats and toe 'tectors on

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/05/2024 14:46

No way would I want a stinky portalloo outside my window. Why can’t they put it in their backyard?

Oh it really does. The day the portaloo went from our drive when the builders left was a very happy one. And that was emptied regularly and they were lovely builders.

But portaloos stink - especially in hot weather.

Of course it matters. They bloody stink, especially in warmer weather!

If it was outside your bedroom window you would absolutely not be so laid back about it.

Howdoesitworkagain · 10/05/2024 15:01

I can’t believe they’d even do this 😮

YADNBU

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2024 15:02

That is just disgusting. I hope you get it moved asap.

SwingTheMonkey · 10/05/2024 15:03

Got to laugh at mn sometimes.

OP ’Next door’s builders have just taken a shit on my kitchen floor’

Mumsnetter ’Well, I would have no problem with that personally, everyone has to go’.

margymary · 10/05/2024 15:04

SO Not Unreasonable. Can you
take a hammer to the scaffolding? Did you approve that? If you did withdraw your approval.
They can put the dang portaloo INSIDE their own house if their is no other possibility or by their back door!

Indeed. Honestly some people will always find a poster unreasonable no matter what. It's like some sort of badge of honor or something. The mind boggles.

Getonwitit · 10/05/2024 15:13

DH is a scaffolder, says the scaff's there are CF. The portaloo shouldn't be up there and they have no reason to go across your property. He says he check with the council that they have a street licence.

portaide · 10/05/2024 15:15

The people having the work done need to give the builders access to their toilet.

LlynTegid · 10/05/2024 15:17

I hope OP they have been given a deadline, say by 4pm today. Remember most people involved in any way in the building trade don't do weekends on a main job at least.

At a later date, the neighbours should have to pay you for the trouble it has caused. I'm sure your time is valuable, say £100 for every hour it's been there?

Ponderingwindow · 10/05/2024 15:27

If that appeared in front of my house, I wouldn’t be leaving the site until it was moved. They wouldn’t be getting any work done because of the fuss.

if they didn’t have permission for the scaffolding either, well i wouldn’t be politely contacting the scaffolding company. I would expect my neighbors to have it sorted within 24 hours.

You can refuse to believe it but it's true. I wouldn't care, it's not a permanent feature, I spend probably 20 seconds of the day looking out of my bedroom window or even in my bedroom so it's not like it's inconveniencing me. Plus it would be fun to wait for someone to go in there and bang on the outside

And if the smell of sewage from the portaloo started to permeate your bedroom?

I suppose poo and wee smells, doesn’t it? And everyone has to go! You could just breathe through your mouth, can’t you!

Have you ever been near a portaloo in your life? Do you know how they work? I'm guessing not

LakeTiticaca · 10/05/2024 15:46

That's insane. Everyone knows what portaloos smell like, especially in hot weather. I would tell them to shift the scaffolding from the front of MY house as well!!
This looks like one of those things that will go viral, such is the insanity of it!!

Yes. We had one for our builders. It smelt horrendous, even when emptied.

This FFS!

We have had builders in for 10 months, they use our downstairs loo when they need to, it hasn't been a problem at all.
