I’m addicted to crafting

Ok. This is obviously lighthearted but I can’t stop crafting.

I am starting to think I might have a problem. I crochet, knit, macrame, sew, do patchwork.

I restore/upcycle furniture and no, thanks to fucking YouTube some air drying clay is arriving tomorrow.

I also decorate cakes and bake.

Toying with a pottery class now.

Am thinking I need more excitement in my life.

And a garden studio.

Go for it, OP!

I also love upcycling. I buy nice frames from charity shops and do my own paintings in them - and some friends have asked me to do one for them. Framing is by far the most costly part of creating a painting, and I usually get a frame for a couple of quid as opposed to £60+ at the framers!

Last week I wandered into a very chi-chi decor shop - shabby chic taken to the next level, with the most stunning faded Indian linens and embroideries made into cushions and curtains. They were mouth-watering but the prices were eye-watering (cushions starting at £120, curtains at about a grand). I remembered I had lots of linen offcuts stowed away and foraged several pads from cushons I'd got bored of. All I had to buy was the tassel braid (from Etsy) and I made 6 mismatched but gorgeous cushions for the garden chairs.

Since then I've found a source of very posh linen offcuts from the shop itself on eBay, so I think I'll make some as presents too.

It's absolutely addictive!

I'd love to learn to knit and crochet.

Would you do craft classes for things for people. Would that help you because you'd be doing it all day long if you had enough customers.

jumpingoffthemoon · 06/05/2024 16:57

If it helps, I buy all the equipment and then don't start the crafting. I think my hobby is planning to craft.

gocompare · 06/05/2024 16:59

@CoffeeCantata will you frame things for people if they were to ask for quotes from you? If it's ok I will ask you when I start painting again.

ILikePistachios · 06/05/2024 17:01

I'm similar although not the same crafts, mine are painting, cross-stitching, jigsaws, clay modelling, baking and I'm attempting to learn how to crochet however it's not going well so far. I also recently discovered diamond painting.

Since having kids I struggle finding time to do crafts but I still have that constant urge of I need to do something.

I saw a Tiktok video recently of a woman who created the most beautiful wall art with yarn, now I'm resisting the urge to want to buy all the supplies to recreate it, she has kits you can buy for roughly £2000 which just isn't an option and I think I can get similar materials for around £2/300

gocompare · 06/05/2024 17:02

@ILikePistachios I think I have seen that ladies videos they are fab.

Oh yes, the painting phase - I went through that at Christmas but I’m shit - very envious of you!

The li en off it’s sound fab! I made some bunting from all my random off cuts last week.

This is well known - I buy what my husband calls decorative yarn and fabric as I love choosing it but know it will never make it to a project.

After having a mooch on etsy I’m highly tempted to get into decoden.

This is the artist I was referring to, her pieces sell for anywhere from $1-6000 depending on the size I believe but they're truly beautiful

You're going to need a bigger house. And have you plenty of people to eat the cakes? If not, you're going to need some bigger clothes. Oooh... why not make some clothes..?

I’d love to but I’m not good enough and I wouldn’t earn enough really - but that sounds amazing.

Part of the reason I started sewing was so I could make clothes I liked that fit my enormous frame! 🤣

Yes, why not look into starting to teach crafting? You might think you're not good enough, but it sounds like you are, and there is money to be made from holding classes if you do some research beforehand in your local area (then perhaps further afield?). OK, you'll need to do the market research first - perhaps some flyers asking for expressions of interest in the local area, look at cost of hiring a room at a venue (village hall or similar) and whether you need insurance, what materials you - or they (students) - will supply, etc. so that you have an idea of the costs (advertising your classes as well).

It's a popular hobby now and the classes seem to do well, particularly if you teach a variety of different crafts.

Oooh Coffee, if you’d be happy to share the name of the eBay shop by PM I’d be ever so grateful- I’m in need of some linen for a little project that I probably don’t need to start but totally will buy the materials for! I can swap amazing fabric remnant shops if this is a deal maker 😅

OldTinHat · 06/05/2024 18:02

I'm a crafting addict too! You name it, I've tried it and bought all the stuff for it.

Fortunately, I've started to volunteer for a charity that sends handmade cards each month to people in care homes who have no family or friends. So that's keeping me busy making cards and using up some of my stash!

YeOldeGreyhound · 06/05/2024 18:14

This is me too.
My latest thing is yarn mandalas. Went round the cheapy shops today buying garden canes (you wind the wool round them).
No idea what to do with the finished things though.

I am also really bad at getting super interested in a new craft, buying all the stuff, then losing interest.

Search “Decoden box” - some are fabulous!

SoupDragon · 06/05/2024 18:18

I am also a serial crafter. I can't stop buying stuff! At the moment my focus is buying loads of fabric from a charity shop and then not knowing what to do with it. I also have the worlds biggest button stash and a cupboard full of different craft stuff.

the worktop in my utility room still bears the scars of a foray into fused glass using a little kiln you put in the microwave.

outlandishly · 06/05/2024 18:22

Love this. I'm the same... but the problem is that I can't settle and get good at one particular thing, I have to try something else!

Lately it's been Crochet & felt crafts and painted wooden toys... but I'm often upcycling furniture too. Just redid some furniture today actually.

Merryoldgoat · 06/05/2024 18:58

I actually feel a lot better knowing I’m not alone!

I’ve just seen someone online painting cork placemats with acrylic paint. Guess what’s next…

I love upcycling furniture too. I'm currently admiring a little footstool that used to be brown velour and is now a dark green chenille with copper leafed feet.

Cerialkiller · 06/05/2024 19:51

Yeah I'm the same. I've got equipment from a dozen crafts filling the utility room cupboards. At the risk of enabling you lot of addicts with ideas my crafts are.

3d felting
Crochet and amagurami
Chain mailing
Batique
Water colour
Decollage
Jewellery making
Sewing
Air brushing
Acrylics
Pencil sketching
Notan/value drawing
Stained glass
Cake decorating/wedding cakes

Hmm I'm actually pretty shocked by the length of that list and I don't think that's everything.

Fortunately I've gone mostly digital now.

Fantasy map drawing
Digital painting
3d modelling
Writing
Garden design.

I've been trying to convince DH that we need a four bed house so I can have a proper work room (and I work from home anyway) I dream of having my own studio. Big desk with my computer stuff, a cosy arm chair next to the shelving for my wools, a messy corner for painting/clay, haaaaah. I can't go into tindels, my bank balance couldn't survive it.

Merryoldgoat · 06/05/2024 20:05

@SoupDragon I’ve just bought some fabric for new cushion covers and I’m thinking my sideboard and dining table could be painted to match…

@Cerialkiller tell me about fantasy map drawing?!
