I’m addicted to crafting

Ok. This is obviously lighthearted but I can’t stop crafting.

I am starting to think I might have a problem. I crochet, knit, macrame, sew, do patchwork.

I restore/upcycle furniture and no, thanks to fucking YouTube some air drying clay is arriving tomorrow.

I also decorate cakes and bake.

Toying with a pottery class now.

Am thinking I need more excitement in my life.

And a garden studio.

I love this thread. (How appropriate).

When I was a child sixty + years ago, all the mothers and grandmothers ‘crafted’ , mainly in textiles : patchwork, hooking for rugs and cushions, rug making from kits, needlepoint, canvas work , obviously knitting and crochet. Most things made were useful, mainly garments but also soft furnishings and table settings ( napkins, tablecloths etc). The women in my family all had a sewing machine as well, used for clothes but also soft furnishings; I remember my grandmother’s treadle Singer , and also turning the handle on the manual machine for my mother when she made curtains. Buying ready made curtains was rather despised as being a bit lazy ( made to measure was very upper class). The work basket was a feature of most houses I knew ( sometimes incorporated into a stool).

My paternal grandmother drew and painted in watercolours as well, my great treat was painting with her. My godmother took up macrame in the late sixties, so we all had various bags etc.

BTW, all these women worked, although the grandmothers were retired by the time I was a child. One grandmother was a tailoress, the other ran a decent size farm .my mother was a teacher, full time by the time I was ten.

I am still using some of their tools.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/05/2024 08:05

I too have a craft stash that’s about to take over the house. I cross stitch, knit (badly), sew mainly cushions and small things, haven’t got the hang of crochet and I was bought an embroidery book for Christmas which I’m about to try. I have more stash than I’ll ever use… which doesn’t stop me from buying more.

I'm not sure this thread is what I need 🤣

You made a Kumihimo disc! And another obsession is born…

aliasname · 07/05/2024 08:32

I’m not sure if the notches on the disk need to be smaller? They have to hold the thread quite firmly.

It's not finished printing yet. But I have thread of all thicknesses....

Unabletomitigate · 07/05/2024 08:53

Go for the garden studio.

ScienceDragon · 07/05/2024 09:12

Hmmmm....
Dressmaking
Patchwork
Cross-stitch
Redwork
Cardmaking
watercolor
Drawing
Inkle weaving
More variations on papercrafting than I can shake a stick at.
Calligraphy, then....
...Chinese calligraphy (a whole new set of tools!)
Started with a hand cranked Sizzix, then a Gemini die cutter, and now own a Cricut
I plan to takeover my son's 3D printer
Hankering desperately for a laser cutter/engraver
Mild daydreaming (at this point) about the new super large Silhouette cutting machine
Supplies include extensive amounts of;
fabric
paper
dies
stencils
paint
pencils
pens (alcohol, gel, chalk, etc)
glue
more paper
glitter
crepe paper (flower making)
more fabric
stamp pads
stamps.

Disclaimer: I am never, ever, bored.

I'm retired and am living my best life, I spend all day at the gym or doing crafts. I do the thinks other people mention, knitting, crochet, patchwork and embroidery but I also spin, dye fabric and fibre, wet felt and needle felt, weave, tat and best of all make bobbin lace. I also draw and am experimenting with water colours.
I can make Dorset buttons.
Everyone should try spinning, it is as good as meditation for me.

I tried spinning once and could barely walk afterwards 😁

Your life sounds wonderful @Mathsbabe

What an inspiring thread thank you @Merryoldgoat

WhereIsMyLight · 07/05/2024 09:48

You all need to watch Blown Away on Netflix.

Then we can start a separate thread about the practicalities of getting a hot box into your home craft room/garden studio.

Norugratsatall · 07/05/2024 10:23

Ah what a fabulous thread for a Tuesday morning, has really made me smile!

I'm also a crafter, I enjoy painting, drawing (pencils are my guilty addiction!), sewing (mainly embroidery, cross stitch and textile art but I do make clothes, patchwork quilting etc. too), also do jigsaw puzzles (mainly in the winter months).

I also have a huge fabric and thread stash and love making 'pictures' from the off cuts and my stash....I use my own photos as inspiration for all my art.

I have t been that well recently so it has all taken a back seat but this thread has inspired me to get going again!

Happy crafting all, would love to see some pics of your makes.

jumpingoffthemoon · 06/05/2024 16:57

If it helps, I buy all the equipment and then don't start the crafting. I think my hobby is planning to craft.

That's like the phrase "buying yarn and using it are two different hobbies". There are t-shirts and the like available printed with that! 😄

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/05/2024 10:36

I like crafting and doing things like you do.

The one thing I’d say, sometimes this can be a bit insular so if you think you’re not socialising enough and would like to do so then join or set up a group where you meet. There’s eg a crochet one at our local pub.

Yes! Joining a craft group is a great way to meet people and strike up friendships. I've been going to knitting and crochet groups at my LYS for over two years now. It's reached the stage where several of us will go for lunch (just at a cafe, nothing extravagant) after the weekly session.

KateMiskin · 07/05/2024 10:46

I dont see the problem. I am not a crafter but admire people who are. Good for your health mental and physical.

Yes, you should teach.

Carouselfish · 07/05/2024 10:51

Hehe, so it's YOU hobbycraft exists for! I walk in there sometimes to buy a cheap thing for my children to do at the weekend and think, 'But I could just BUY all this stuff without having to make it myself...' and boggle at the idea! Grin

DrJoanAllenby · 07/05/2024 11:50

What's wrong with that?

I have enough yarn to open a shop!

I do give some away every now and then though.

I will never be able to use it all up in my lifetime and I'm a prolific crocheter!

Okay, cool. A 3D printer sounds like a another craft project really useful tool!

sorry that was meant to quote @SoupDragon

Merryoldgoat · 07/05/2024 19:30

Honestly - at least 4 new things to try. My husband is going to lose his mind 🤣

I have just had my clay delivery so I’m going to try some stuff after dinner!

I do watercolours. And cross stitch. And decoupage. And mosaic. And I want to do glass etching and stained glass.

Never enough hours in the day

Merryoldgoat · 07/05/2024 19:35

@ByCoolWriter I quite fancy mosaic I must say.

Behappyplease · 07/05/2024 20:48

i am addicted to crafting, it started with cross stitch but it is now crocheting blankets. Currently doing sunshine and flowers by janie crow. I really fancy trying glass painting, I have seen some amazing hand painted wine glasses at a craft show.

WeeOrcadian · 07/05/2024 21:07

OP

I'm a hardcore, long time crocheter

I cannot, for the fucking life of me, work out how to knit. So I tip my hat to you.

Crack on!!

Merryoldgoat · 07/05/2024 21:36

@WeeOrcadian

It’s funny, I’m a rubbish knitter - can only do rows, decrease and increase. Learned as a child and only took up crochet 3 years ago and am so much better already.

@Binglebong 2 days, 2 bloody days, my orderly 2 storage boxes of stuff has exploded. I don't have anything I need and I now need a dolls house too. I've lost the ability to throw stuff away and had a yoghurt and thought corner bath.
I think i have a problem
