I’m addicted to crafting

Merryoldgoat · 06/05/2024 16:36

Ok. This is obviously lighthearted but I can’t stop crafting.

I am starting to think I might have a problem. I crochet, knit, macrame, sew, do patchwork.

I restore/upcycle furniture and no, thanks to fucking YouTube some air drying clay is arriving tomorrow.

I also decorate cakes and bake.

Toying with a pottery class now.

Am thinking I need more excitement in my life.

And a garden studio.

I always used to loved knitting and cross stitch but as work became busier I let everything slide so I'm trying to get back into crafts. This is a lovely thread, I'm enjoying reading the crafts everyone's doing

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/05/2024 09:08

Wow at those cakes - amazing xx

I'm a bit of a messy type and have far too much respect for other people's digestive systems to try that...... I did try and make my Mum a cake once for Mother's day once and gave up after three botched attempts - something wrong with egg ratio as I recall. She got flowers lol x

I'm moving into a tiny one bed flat soon and I've decided to use the sitting room as my boudoir as it's bigger and I suspect I won't be entertaining much anyway.

The bedroom will be my studio. I'm plotting creative storage solutions for the things I don't put into storage. It's going to be cramped and cluttered all round but I'm determined to make it work. I've been so long without a space to do anything in (cos complicated reasons) I'm convinced even if I end up with a tiny space to actually work in I'll make it happen.

Whataretalkingabout · 10/05/2024 11:23

@MistressoftheDarkSide good idea to start small. I have found it's better to use just one pencil and 3 small tubes of primaries before investing in anything more. If you spend a fortune on supplies all at once then you can be overwhelmed and not know where to start and end up doing nothing.

I hope you enjoy your new creative space.

Bovrilla · 10/05/2024 12:00

I took need a garden studio.

It was metalworking for me: stamped jewellery and silversmithing which I loved but it's not a cheap hobby.

Then I got into embroidery which is good, but I am pretty poor at it.

My constant fun hobby has been soap making and other beauty products. Haven't bought a lip balm in years, make my own body butters, bath bombs, room diffusers etc too. My daughter is a very happy and willing tester 🤣

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 12:58

I made some basic sop last year. If I'd known it was so easy the lockdown hunt for soap would have been unnecessary!

You don't have zero ability, you just need to practise. You also need to try all the crafts... 😂

You’re a bad influence!

I’ve now ordered square paper for origami purposes.

I think I need diamond painting in my life. I’m eyeing up calligraphy and card making. I’d like a ‘card making kit’ to get started but can’t seem to find one.

BloodandGlitter · 10/05/2024 19:33

@Whataretalkingabout I actually learned on youtube! I'm terrible for watching tutorials and then getting addicted. I did it a couple of times on my own but ended up buying the WRMK book binding set for about £15 as it came with the needles and the board to measure and pierce everything. Once you have your pieces and it comes to the stitching it takes about 10 minutes and you can put anything in for signatures.

Whataretalkingabout · 10/05/2024 20:31

Sorry @MistressoftheDarkSide , I didn't mean to be so preachy and tell you what to do! My house & atelier are chock full of stuff too. I just wanted to warn you that when I was young and starting out I used to go crazy stocking up supplies in advance and the art genie would bite me back!

Thank you @BloodandGlitter , that is encouraging that it is relatively easy and inexpensive to get started. I think self made books are really cool!
I will check out the techniques on YT. Thanks also for the name of the WRMK bookbinding set you used. ;)

@Merryoldgoat , so how did your clay piece turn out? Is it already dry?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 10/05/2024 20:39

@Whataretalkingabout

LOL no worries - I'm a lost cause already and I'm 55 x I appreciate any input though - it's grand to find a thread like this with fellow addicts 🥰 x

Lol. Kumihimo is amazing, the different patterns are so creative and all from a small 3” disc and a few bits of yarn! I haven’t used my disc for years, but now have a sudden urge to dig it out 😆

I couldn't work out if it was yarn or thread by googling. It looks marvelous 😍

Merryoldgoat · 10/05/2024 20:50

OMG! You reminded me of some origami paper from Japan I bought when I was on holiday 20 odd years ago 🤣🤣🤣

@gocompare
What I do is to rummage for a decent frame (some are naff and unsuitable) which has a nice mount and glass etc, then take it apart to clean it. I then have to paint my masterpiece (😀) to the precise size. This has worked well for me so far, but of course you're not always lucky when searching! It wouldn't really work, I don't think, to do it the other way round - that is to try to find a frame for an already completed painting.

@Exasperateddonut
I think I meant to say eBay! Sorry. What I did was to put a search in for 'SusieWatsonDesigns linen' and some offcuts came up. These were still pricey, and some quite small, but there were some you could make cushions from when I looked - or if you wanted to make little bags, bunting or stuffed decorations to hang they'd be fine. But I then put in a search for 'Indian print linen fabric' or similar and I got some lovely things, very similar to SW's, in heavy Ikat weave which at well under £20 - and big enough for about 3 cushions. Just been on again and seen some other gorgeous Indian block-printed designs with faded pink leaves on a natural beige linen. Yum!

Now, the braid is really expensive if you want the nicest, but on Etsy I got some tassel braid (cotton in a jute colour) like the stuff SW uses, and also some looped braid. I will get back to you with the company I bought from (it's my husband's birthday today and we're off out for the day!).

Just a warning if you look for braid: watch out for the American or overseas sellers - they have some lovely stuff but by the time taxes and postage have been added, it's a shocking price, so you have to be a bit careful. I wouldn't be so bothered about the price if I was an expert seamstress, but I'm not - so I wouldn't risk using really expensive stuff, but that's just me!

Hope this helps.

That was very in-depth! Thank you! I love a bit of SW. The fabrics are just lovely 🥰

@Whataretalkingabout

Not yet - bit damp on the underside!!

I'm actually quite proud of myself for not (yet) buying a 3d printer I won't use. I have a small machine that adds glue to the back of the stuff I'll never cut out though. I bought both permanent and repositionable glue refills. It was about 2015 and the machine reminds me of Bertha.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 22:01

Despite really, really wanting a 3d printer, I never thought I'd get much use out of it. I was wrong 🤣

jumpingoffthemoon · 10/05/2024 22:05

@SoupDragon noooo don't tell me that! 😂

I'll have to keep reminding myself I have nowhere to put one anyway 🤣

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 22:11

Just get rid of a pet or family member. That will make space. If you get rid of a family member, you might get a craft room too! 😂

It’s an ‘art’ apparently. I’ve hurt my wrist with too much crochet, and am seriously considering digging out my Kumihimo disc - because I need to be doing something with my hands.

Mama2many73 · 10/05/2024 23:04

jumpingoffthemoon · 06/05/2024 16:57

If it helps, I buy all the equipment and then don't start the crafting. I think my hobby is planning to craft.

The hunt and buying is a hobby in itself. I've had a felting kit and crochet kit for several yrs now.
OP, I'm back enjoying cross stitch, finishing kits that I started 20yrs ago, finding new stuff!
I've done macrame yrs ago, have 2 small kits, to retry, card making, jewellery making, pictures/jewellery with sea glass, rock painting with the kids (now just me!)
It's my 'me time' it requires thought and concentration so I forget about stuff that worries me, especially when counting and checking in the cross stitching.
I thinkidlike to try a pottery class. Trying to find a craft group, even an informal one is difficult. Doesn't seem to be any near by x

I have found my people! I have a craft room and I love it. I often sit and look at all mymlovely
lovely things that will probably never be used up but the possibilities make me genuinely happy!

We have a craft (and bit of music) room.ican go up, sort through, find stuff I'd forgotten about, or rearrange, or plan for hours and when I come down my DH will ask if I've made anything nice and I'm 'nope!'

I crochet at all times. It's rare not to see it in my hands or near me 😂. Especially when out. I'd love to try this. I guess you either have the knack or not. Wonder can you try it without the disc. I'll maybe look in YouTube. I have looked into making bracelets before but never quite got there.

Same here. All the gear, no idea.

Same, but I can add “no talent” to the list too 😂

Nat6999 · 11/05/2024 04:33

I'm housebound & disabled, I crochet, draw, paint & do adult colouring. I'm also in the middle of writing a book based on my dad, grandparents, aunt & uncles during WW2 seen through my dad's eyes. I'm saving for a sewing machine, I collect Sindy Dolls & I want to have a go at making clothes for them.

Nat6999 · 11/05/2024 04:36

This is the blanket I crocheted for ds.

I’m addicted to crafting
FIFIBEBE · 11/05/2024 06:44

It sounds lovely but it seems that crafting supplies can become overwhelming very easily. A few friends have downsized houses or cleared houses and crafting always features in difficult issues.
