I’m addicted to crafting

Merryoldgoat · 06/05/2024 16:36

Ok. This is obviously lighthearted but I can’t stop crafting.

I am starting to think I might have a problem. I crochet, knit, macrame, sew, do patchwork.

I restore/upcycle furniture and no, thanks to fucking YouTube some air drying clay is arriving tomorrow.

I also decorate cakes and bake.

Toying with a pottery class now.

Am thinking I need more excitement in my life.

And a garden studio.

@Binglebong 2 days, 2 bloody days, my orderly 2 storage boxes of stuff has exploded. I don't have anything I need and I now need a dolls house too. I've lost the ability to throw stuff away and had a yoghurt and thought corner bath.

My sympathy! Mwahahaha !

If it helps, I buy all the equipment and then don't start the crafting. I think my hobby is planning to craft.

Feel this. Bought a cricut years ago and still have no idea how to use it.

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2024 16:59

I am a passionate painter (oil ), life drawer, do clay sculpture, refinish furniture and upholstery, play the piano, sew clothing, home furnishings, diy home renovation- plastering, stucco, painting, tiling, knit for babies and adults , make blankets, collect wool, and is that all?
I go through intensive periods of doing one of these for 12 hours a day 7 days a week and then without warning switch to another! These periods can go from months to years! Having moved 2 years ago and already planning a move I needed a break from physical exhaustion. So right now my passion alternates from scrolling Mumsnet and Rightmove (equivalent).

Startingagainandagain · 09/05/2024 17:17

Me too!

It all started a year ago when I bought my small terrace house and had little money left to decorate it.

I started up-cyling furniture from Freegle or that I bought from charity shops.

Then I moved to up-cycling lampshades, cushions, flower pots and making some collages to display as artworks on the walls.

I also painted tiles in my kitchen, the kitchen cabinets and all the walls in the house.

My next step is to buy a sewing machine. I got lots of free fabrics on Freegle from a retired seamstress and I want to start making curtains, cushions and clothes.

Something else I also got into with the whole DIY thing is making my own organic beauty and cleaning products.

Fun stuff and it all saves me money.

@Whataretalkingabout I love painting but I’m rubbish.

However 12 hours of crafting sounds blissful!

I have two hobbies, depending how much time I’ve got: crafting and buying craft supplies. And, since lockdown, I have never felt the need to justify the size of my stash again.

Well maybe I have exaggerated a tiny bit. ;)

BloodandGlitter · 09/05/2024 20:20

I haven't seen book binding mentioned which is one of my (million) hobbies. It's even better if you draw or journal as you can make your own supplies.
I do painting, clay sculpts, jewelry making, taxidermy, resin, cricut, book binding, alcohol markers, journalling and sewing.

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2024 20:41

@BloodandGlitter where and how did you learn to bind books? I agree it must be a very interesting & useful skill to make one's own journals and drawing 'carnets'. And you could choose the exact size and kind of paper you like and, and, and...
I would love to learn to make my own frames too, but it takes alot of space and materials and is an art in itself... I am trying to concentrate on things I excel in rather than always spreading myself thin and succumbing to new shiny things, but, but,but....

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2024 20:54

@Merryoldgoat , you should never have ordered any clay with all the delicious hobbies you have! When will you find the time? But of course I am not serious. I absolutely adore clay sculpting and it does take a lot of time to produce anything. I encourage you to join a group if possible where you will learn and be inspired so much by others. It is amazing how each person has unique talents for different things and that really shows up in clay work. My 'specialty' is heads. I love to work from life with people around me but also from Greek and Roman sculpture! If I can figure out how to add a photo I might post one . Maybe.

So tell us what you are good at @Merryoldgoat ? And anyone else?

Merryoldgoat · 09/05/2024 21:04

@Whataretalkingabout

I love it all!

I’m good at crochet - I make blankets for anyone expecting at work or who wants one.

I’m ok at sewing

My cakes are quite good

I’m actually not sure if I’m actually any good at any of them!! 🤣🤣

@Merryoldgoat , your cakes are magnificent!!! I especially like the
" coral floral" cake. It is definitely the most artistic . I am amazed you can make something so sophisticated at home! You should learn to make fine chocolates and you could open a business.....
Baking is kind of like 'landart' to me. It is ephemeral and doesn't last very long but requires so much work! I used to cook and play the piano alot when my DC were young. But it felt like I had nothing to show for it at the end of the day! So I switched to fine art , so something will outlive me.;)

Excited101 · 09/05/2024 21:54

Me too op!
I Cricut, I photograph, I sew (a bit), I bake and I decorate cakes.

saturnspinkhoop · 09/05/2024 22:47

How have I only just found this thread? I’m starting to get into crafts. I have zero ability however. I’ve just bought a quilling set, which looks good. Linked to that, I fancy getting into card making, which of course will involve calligraphy.

Thanks to all who mentioned diamond painting. It looks like a cheap one to get started on. I fancy making crochet animals, but then think back to how I tried to learn to crochet as a child and was incredibly useless at it.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 07:31

You don't have zero ability, you just need to practise. You also need to try all the crafts... 😂
