Abhorrent comments made about a persons height

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 25/04/2024 09:30

Calling someone who is below the average height, "pint-sized" is abhorrent
at the very least. A person's height is beyond the person's control and calling them "pint-sized," some may even say it's an ableist comment

Yesterday, during the PMQ's the lead was taken by the deputy heads of both Tories and Labour. Standing in for the Labour leader was Angela Rayner. She called the Tory leader, Rishi Sunak a "pint-sized leader" when she was losing the arugument

This reminds me of clowns at work who had nicknames for other people who did not fit in with their agenda. Often people will make disparaging comments about another when they feel threatened because of their own inadequacies.
Should she apologise for making these disgusting comments?

AIBU to believe these comments were necessary, inappropriate and disgustingly abhorrent.

Angela Rayner aims ‘pint-sized loser’ jibe at Rishi Sunak during PMQs

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden countered the criticism by mocking the Labour deputy over her housing arrangements.

Taking out all the political drama - I get called pint sized along with other jokes about being short and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I can't imagine getting worked up over it if I'm honest.

It is pretty minor compared to the un-Parliamentary behaviour of the Tories. Illegally proroguing Parliament springs to mind.

Not to mention the lying and lying and lying 🤬

Bet you weren't bothered about Boris and the 'post box' niqab comments though, were you hun!!

Also, referring to leading female MPs as 'thick', as many of you have here, is WAY more offensive than her referring to Sunak as pint-sized.

I'd also wager that some of you speak of her this way because of her accent, which is a whole new level of twattery.

Johnson came under a huge amount of criticism for that.

Actually I quite like the idea. I could sue Sainsbury's for placing goods out of reach of pint-sized people like me.

So do I. I often feel discriminated against at the supermarket. Last week I was forced to buy own brand Earl Grey tea because the Twinings was out of my reach.

Johnson came under a huge amount of criticism for that.

And was then elected prime minister in a landslide so people clearly didn’t give too much of a shit 🙄

Ha ha You mean like a Cornish Pasty?

PM could probably fit inside a Cornish Pasty

AR is ghastly😫uncouth and lacking in class.
A neolithic simian of the first order.

Me neither - I even refer to myself as ''being a 'shortarse'' when I cannot reach things in a supermarket and need to call over an average sized or taller person by get it for me.
I have been pint-sized (but average for my demographic) all my life and now getting shorter while young people are looming over me. I can get under umbrellas held by the normal-sized!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/04/2024 12:59

Funnily enough she was entirely winning the argument!

I mean, it’s obviously not right to attack someone’s height. I think abhorrent is going a bit far.

Really sauce for the goose and gander springs to mind. Tories get away with so much mud slinging at Labour for utterly spurious things. Height isn’t a protected characteristic unlike race and sex which Tories seem
to think are fair game - comments made about London mayor as a Muslim and Raynor herself as a woman spring to mind.
One thing gets said back, and the like of OP pipe up with “abhorrent”.

A confident person would laugh off a comment like this. Different if they had dwarfism rather than just being a bit short and slim.

TobaccoFlower · 25/04/2024 13:01

Compared to the damage the tories have done to this country, calling someone pint sized is nothing.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 25/04/2024 13:03

I don’t think this was a comment on his height as much as a comment on how shitty a leader he is. He makes the UK seem so much smaller and more worthless than it is.

singingthypraises · 25/04/2024 13:05

Couldn't get worked up about someone insulting a Tory given they've said all sorts of awful stuff themselves. Then again I'm also short and have been referred to as pint sized plenty of times myself. Does it bother me? Not one bit. I am short. I know my worth and I don't place my value on my height. Seems a non issue to me.

That comment says a lot more about you than Angela Rayner.

I can't be bothered about this. We used to work with someone called Tony who was very small and he never minded his nickname of Shetland Tony. Like in work, politics is a lot of banter like this.

This was just read out by Matt Chorley on Times Radio! Grin

And yet she's still so much better than the shambles on the opposite side of the floor.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 25/04/2024 13:11

I've been called pint size all my life it's hardly damaging it just shows their immaturity 🤷‍♀️.
They wouldn't know how to handle me if I was taller 🤣

Goldenbear · 25/04/2024 13:12

Did anyone else have to look up ‘simian’ to understand the above posters description of AR?

bombastix · 25/04/2024 13:12

Platform shoes are available

Goldenbear · 25/04/2024 13:15

cowboy boots sometimes offer a heel.

SecretSoul · 25/04/2024 13:24

The constant name-calling, sniping, and jeering is precisely why so many people find politics unpalatable.

There are many ways to have a heated debate and highlight the opposition’s shortfalls without resorting to juvenile digs.

I also find it irritating that there’s a complete lack of honesty. Lots of people said that Starmer should have been point scoring against the Tories during the worst of COVID times but I actually found it really refreshing that he was willing to back the government to help get the country through a difficult period.

All of the MPs need to bloody grow up.

newnamethanks · 25/04/2024 13:28

No, I know what simian means. I also know how to spell Hermione, unlike Hermoine, above. And I fully expect Angela to be able to spell her own name.

kittensinthekitchen · 25/04/2024 13:32

Being 5ft 7 isn't a disability FFS. What an idiotic thing to say.

I really wish MN would enable a 'block' option because you are one of the most goady, uneducated, infuriating posters in a while.

Notreat · 25/04/2024 13:37

Angela Rayner has had so much vitriol and abuse directed against her saying Sunak is pint sized is nothing in comparison.
And she was quoting from Nadine Dorres book anyway
