Abhorrent comments made about a persons height

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 25/04/2024 09:30

Calling someone who is below the average height, "pint-sized" is abhorrent
at the very least. A person's height is beyond the person's control and calling them "pint-sized," some may even say it's an ableist comment

Yesterday, during the PMQ's the lead was taken by the deputy heads of both Tories and Labour. Standing in for the Labour leader was Angela Rayner. She called the Tory leader, Rishi Sunak a "pint-sized leader" when she was losing the arugument

This reminds me of clowns at work who had nicknames for other people who did not fit in with their agenda. Often people will make disparaging comments about another when they feel threatened because of their own inadequacies.
Should she apologise for making these disgusting comments?

AIBU to believe these comments were necessary, inappropriate and disgustingly abhorrent.

Angela Rayner aims ‘pint-sized loser’ jibe at Rishi Sunak during PMQs

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden countered the criticism by mocking the Labour deputy over her housing arrangements.

Read my OP and note that I'd never heard this woman talk before. No wonder Sir Kiteth keeps his distance from her.

I'm no Tory or Labour but IMO, the Labour Party is much better off without this woman as IMO, she is unstable dynamite judging by what she said yesterday

She’s unstable dynamite because she quoted Nadine Dorries’s book which calls Rishi “pint-sized”?!

Have you ever seen PMQ before? It’s normally way worse than this! It’s a national disgrace watching them all joke and insult and shout at each other.

I hope you get this worked up about the rest of the lying, rude, self-serving horrorshows in government. Would be awful if you only noticed when a northern woman says something a bit untoward.

Wellhellooooodear · 26/04/2024 13:27

Abhorrent! Really?

JessS1990 · 26/04/2024 13:31

Brexile · 26/04/2024 13:13

Yes, and calling him a loser is just weird. He's a billionaire, heiress' husband, and the prime minister of a major country. If he's a loser, what does that make the rest of us?

There's plenty to critcize without resorting to ad hominems. Starmer's Labour seem to specialise in missing the obvious open goals while simultaneously scoring unnecessary own goals like this one. I'm a former Labour member and I won't be voting in the coming election.

What has Sunak won, that would make him a winner?
The last election he stood in he was beaten by someone who was outlasted by a lettuce.
In the next election he stands in, he and the party he leads will be soundly beaten. AKA he is and will be a loser.

Its cool, I've got no problem with it. But now we know where the bar is. Personal insults are fine, so long as its a political opponent.

I've just bookmarked this thread for when AR or her colleagues are indignant with rage about some Tory being insulting or whatever, I can refer posters calling for resignations to their comments about this being no big deal.

To be fair, I was unaware she was quoting Mad Nads, which puts an entirely different spin on it.

newnamethanks · 26/04/2024 15:38

I reckon he's had a bet with Suella. She betting against getting any migrants to Rwanda and him saying he'll do it before he leaves office at next GE. He'll be a Winner if he doesn't rely on Philp for directions.

This thread is mad. The OP doesn't even understand basic facts.

I agree. Still working on what are normal interactions. Reminds me of the poster of exhausting links who only pops up on pro-Tory threads. Parallel interactions, not quite getting it. (Damn, what was that poster’s name? Someone help me out!)

Clavinova? She (like me!) pops up on every political thread. I’m surprised she’s not here.

RosaRoja · 26/04/2024 18:12

Or is she?

Muddlingalongsomehow · 26/04/2024 18:12

Oh ffs, people. This is Nadine Dorries' term for him when he ousted Johnson. Rayner is taking the piss out of his divided party by QUOTING it. Stop the pearl clutching. Get angry about Cameron telling Corbyn that "if my mother were here, she'd tell him to straighten his tie and put on a decent suit" or Matt Hancock's appalling telling Rosina Allen-Khan she should "watch her tone" or all the filthy jibes about Rayner opening her legs to distract Johnson.

jillb55 · 26/04/2024 18:16

She was quoting Nadine Dorries, apparently. Not a good move but the whole place is like a barnyard and what she said was no worse than what others have said, including about her.

INeedToClingToSomething · 26/04/2024 19:04

I don't think politicians should be commenting on the appearance of others to win political arguments. Seems a bit silly and childish and could potentially be very offensive. But politicians say all sorts to each other and their behaviour often appears like playground behaviour so I think this is far from the worst of it.

I am "vertically challenged" and wouldn't be at all worried et someone calling me "pint-sized". It's not really that bad that I would call it "abhorrent" although probably slightly more offensive to men as height and masculinity are linked by society. However I still think "abhorrent" is a bit too strong really.

Notonthestairs · 26/04/2024 19:12

It certainly wasn't an accident that Rayner quoted Dorries to Dowden.

Dowden was one of the first, if not the first, ministers to resign under Johnson and rather pulled the trigger on the end of Johnson's leadership. Sunak waited a couple of weeks before resigning himself. Sunak and Dowden are close friends and who knows, maybe Dorries has a point about Dowden, Jenrick and Sunak collaborating to get rid of Johnson.

(Obviously Johnson had significant input in his own downfall. By the time he resigned his polling was in the toilet.)

But there is still a section of the Conservatives that would love to bring Johnson back - they would do anything right now to save their jobs.

So the broader picture is that by quoting Dorries Rayner wanted to remind Conservative backbenches that Dowden/Sunak precipitated their current crisis.

Obviously alot of the focus has been on the pint sized reference but I think the main thrust of her quote was about Dowden/Sunak knifing Johnson in the back.

I hadn’t seen this, but what a disgraceful thing to say to him.

I didn’t vote at the last election as I thought both options were awful. Lots of people who did vote ended up voting for the least bad option. I don’t think I will vote this time either. I don’t think the current conservative govt has done a good job. But I don’t Angela Rayner is is a good option either. I wish they would put a “none of the above” box.

Students' Union elections, at least in my day ⏳, always had R.O.N. as a candidate. The acronym meant Reopen Nominations, literally a 'none of the above' option. I often always think of it on election days 😭

Itradehorses · 26/04/2024 19:23

Don't really care to be honest. I do care about the fact that Sunak pays next to no tax though on an actual rate of about 23% of his massive wealth earnings because of how the Tories have gamed the tax system.

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 26/04/2024 19:33

I dislike Angela Rayner and her party but she wasn't offensive, she wasn't ableist and she said nothing distasteful.

I'm tiny. I get called a shortarse. I call myself a shortarse. I don't weep about it.

AnnieSnap · 26/04/2024 20:49

It’s Sunak. He deserves to be insulted. I refer to him a the poisoned dwarf. Shoot me!

You remind me of the fool at work that used to call our manager, behind her back, "poison dwarf." That manager was was not that short but some people don't need an excuse to be abhorrent.

Absolutely. I remember a few weeks ago it was all about 'toxic femininity' (i.e. being feminist). I suppose if you're training an AI, you need to feed it a wide range of subject matter.

At least word of the week isn't 'interlect'.

I don’t think there is any evidence that Nadine Norris called Rishi Sunak a ‘pint sized loser. Body shaming is not acceptable and we should hold all our politicians to higher standards.
