aibu not shaving my legs

tis is causing a bit of friction (excuse the pun) between me and dh.

i really cant be bothered doing it, its the winter and i am living in jeans, when the summer comes round and i am in crops etc i will start doing it again then.

last night i had my legs streched out on the couch and he made a really childish comment about it, basically along the lines of he thinks its horrible and wants me to wear socks (in my own f**king house)

to be honest it was more the childish way he put it that pissed me right of, had he said it in a joking way i possibly would have toddled of upstairs and got a razor out.

this is the same man who finds periods yucky and wont ever let his dc see him without having at least shorts on, he has a very childish view about a lot of things.

anyway once we went to bed last night he made a move and i said no-way, if my legs were that horrible then why on earth would he want to have sex with me.

aibu about this? do you always have your legs done? i shave under my arms every few days but thats because i am terrified of having b.o. i would leave them in the winter as well if i could.

btw my legs are not even that bad, i have fair hair so its only some dark hair around my ankles that are noticable, above that you cant see anything.

Surely all women are feminists ?!

Don't all women think that women have a right to be treated equally to their male counterparts ?

its not the same problem with hair in your mouth with men tho is it?

Mumcentreplus · 01/04/2008 20:14

what has shaving your body got to do with a mans rights?..lol

NomDePlume · 01/04/2008 20:14

rofl @ mumcentreplus.

MotherFunk, sometimes you come across as a bit too desperate to show that you are all for the rights of everyone. Obv this is an admirable principle, but it seems to be that you go to painstaking lengths to point it out.

very dodgy practice.
I am me. Fortunately, DP is ok with this, and doesn't require the hairless, socially acceptbale version.

CoteDAzur · 01/04/2008 20:19

expat - Mine also got a little finer, but that is probably due to age - my mother also waxed all her life, and now (in her late 60s) her body hair is very much thinned out. I can't say that is from any damage to follicles, probably more because of changed hormone levels.

By "sugaring", do you mean sugar-based wax? If so, I am also from a country where that is the prevalent method of hair removal. In any supermarket here in France, you can buy sugar-based wax in a tube with a roller on one end, which you just stick in the microwave for 20 seconds and start using. It's brilliant.

I think it is quite hard to argue with the 'conditioned by patriarchal society' argument as those arguing will always answer a 'I think it is nicer' with 'Much of the conditioning is subconscious / subliminal. It a bit of a no win situation, I think.

On the hair subject. I hate waxing but I do remove the hair from my legs and armpits (shaving) and have a downstairs tidy up (not all off) from time to time. The armpits is the only one I'm really fastidious about because I hate the prickly feeling. I'm a bit lazy wrt the legs and fadge issue. I prob get around to legs once a week and fadge once a month.

CoteDAzur · 01/04/2008 20:25

Women are expected to have waxed or shaved legs because they are expected to have smooth and soft skin.

Nothing to do with prepubescence, imho.

I am reassured by most of the people on this thread as had vague idea that all other women except me have smooth legs all the time..

i would do it more but I get shaving rash, and ingrowing hairs if I wax. So it's not just laziness in my case.

Btw, do the people on here who shave all the time wear makeup every day/have nice nails etc as well???

NiftyNanny · 01/04/2008 20:41

I've never met a man who's trimmed or shaved his bits.

I suggested it to my OH just to see if he'd do it for me (as he does everything else i ask, he's my bitch) but he is still not forthcoming.

My legs were left since Jan but I wanted to wear lacey tights on Sun so I got rid of the >1cm hairs that I'd cultivated.

I do think the portrayal of smooth skinned, wide eyed blonde women reflects youth (not nec. prepubescence), which is attractive to a potential mate as proof of many childbearing years to come. But it's a bit twisted these days. Beauty paegent 5 year olds with makeup trowelled on....

I like to be natural, personally - very low maintenence, seldom blow dry my hair, makeup maybe once a month on special occasion, and I still think I'm a minx! If I don't feel attractive I know there's another reason (usually I feel fat, now that's a whole different argument)

Personally I don't give two craps about shaving my legs, but i can understand some people like to be hairless. It does feel nice. But I have different priorities - not more worthwhile ones, just personally I'd rather have a shower and can't be faffed with shaving....

Wow, we are all conditioned by society as to what is attractive. It's almost impossible not to be.

It depresses me that many women only feel attractive if they have removed their body hair. I would suspect the motives of any man who only wants it all removed down below.

So IMHO YANBU

PS

I also feel sad when women proclaim "I'm not a feminist" Imagine life if there hadn't been any. I'm proud to call myself a feminist (still a massive pay gap).

Mumcentreplus · 01/04/2008 20:46

surely the shaving of the fur-burger is the real issue if we are talking about pre-pube...I mean women are not friggin hair-less..

zippitippitoes · 01/04/2008 20:46

i uased to rarely wear make up but now i moisturise and use fiundation and bronzer everyday..its called old age lol

i keep my nails short and clean..i just cut them with nail scissors (zips wonders how eccentric/media led this might be)

Mumcentreplus · 01/04/2008 20:49

I like smooth soft skin...but that actually comes from exfoliation and moisturising not just shaving..

amytheearwaxbanisher · 01/04/2008 20:51

each to there own but i hate my legs to be hairy
